Theatre in the Villages Sat 18 Oct, 7.30pm, Wendover Memorial Hall Sponsored by AVDC and now in its sixteenth year, this programme enables a wide variety of professional entertainment to play in communities where performances of such high standard are not normally available. In these days of austerity, the programme can only be run on a breakeven basis. So without strong support of the villages, this source of so many cultural delights will simply disappear.

This year we have chosen Faust a new actor-musician adaption of Goethe’s epic tale of morality and the supernatural revamped into a beautiful and thrilling musical for modern audiences. The Brighton Argus wrote this full- blooded, sensuous spin on Faust has a rare power. It won the Argus Angel Award and picked up a string of five star reviews at Brighton’s fringe festival.

Any surplus beyond breakeven will help save lives and improve life chances of orphans in remote Ugandan villages through the work of local charity Bega kwa Bega.

HS2 – New property consultation open On 8 July 2014, the Department for Transport and HS2 Ltd. announced the start of a new consultation on property compensation. This consultation is on two further proposals for people and communities living close to the route, in addition to the measures that are already being offered currently. The proposed new supplementary cash payment schemes are intended for residential owner-occupiers and were originally announced in April 2014. This is now your chance to officially have your say on these new proposals and argue that the measures still do not go far enough. The consultation is now open and closes at 2345 on Tuesday 30 September 2014. Responses can be made online, by email or can be posted. Key points for consultation are proposals for:

A new Alternative cash offer for those living within 120m of the line in rural areas who do not wish to sell, i.e. taking a cash sum and staying in your property instead of selling to HS2 Ltd. under a voluntary purchase scheme.

New Homeowner payments in rural areas between 120m and 300m from the line.

More information, map books and details on how to respond can be found at the following Government website: www.go v.uk/government/co nsu l tat ions/hs2 -property -consultation-2014 We of course continue to fight HS2, and the Petitioning process will allow us to raise matters of better mitigation and compensation, but as ever we need as many people to respond to consultations such as this in order to ensure that our voices are heard and we obtain the very best we possibly can for our people and our community should HS2 go ahead. Lindengate As a local charity supporting those dealing with mental health issues through gardening and horticulture we’ve had some great news recently with two substantial grants from the Community Chest (AVDC and Vale of Aylesbury Housing) and the first ever grant awarded by the “Prevention Matters” campaign from Bucks CC.

Together with two smaller grants from The Bernard Sunley Foundation and Wendover Parish Council this means that we now have enough money to get the equipment, fencing, sewage plant, portakabin and polytunnels to enable us to complete the site in the autumn. This is a great achievement in such a short time!

Our discussions with a wide range of organisations continue to highlight the demand for our service. As well as stress and depression we see real value to those dealing with the aftermath of strokes, heart attacks, head injuries as well as dementia, loneliness and respite activities for Carers.

If you’ve been to World’s End recently you’ll see enormous changes emerging from the six foot high sea of nettles, thistles and docks! Ground for

the portakabin and the first of the polytunnels has already been cleared, with the rest to follow shortly. We’ve had great support for our volunteer days and evenings in July (more very welcome!) – keep an eye on our website – www.lindengate.org.uk – and our Facebook and Twitter pages for new dates

as they emerge. If you want more information just email us at [email protected]

As a charity we rely on volunteer Fundraising Groups to raise vital funds and awareness of charity’s work and we are looking to form a group in the Aylesbury vale district. Month by month for the next four years this column will describe how the First World War affected the people of Wendover and how they dealt with the new and extraordinary circumstances that arose exactly 100 years ago.

August 1914 The First World War was triggered by the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, at Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. The assassin was Gavrilo Pricip, a 19 year-old Serbian nationalist. During the following five weeks the ambitions of the European States for power and territory, fuelled by misunderstandings and a complicated series of alliances, led to the start of a long and horrific war.

It was these events and Britain’s entry into the war that the Headmaster of Wendover School, Arthur Molineux, felt “compelled to put on record”. The School Log Book entry for 4 August read: “England today declared war on Germany, who refuses to respect the neutrality of Belgium, and thus we have England, Belgium, France and Russia as allies, commencing active operations against Germany and Austria. History will be able to prove whether the action of Serbia is the cause or only the pretext for war”.

In fact, the outbreak of war came as something of a surprise. The Bucks Herald of 1 August referred to “peace and war trembling in the balance”, but the paper was more concerned with the forthcoming Bank

Holiday events. Among them was the Wendover Amateur Floral and H o r t i c u l t u r a l Association Annual Show which was to be held in the

Manor Gardens on Bank Holiday Monday, 3 August. The Wendover Prize Brass Band was to provide the music and attractions included a wheelbarrow race and a cricket match – Wendover Gentlemen (bowling and fielding with the left hand) against The Lee Ladies. The Gentlemen managed to win and one of their opening batsmen was a Wendover school teacher, Arthur Gomm. The School Log Book for 4 August recorded: “Mr A. G. Gomm, certified assistant, has joined the Territorial Forces for home and foreign service . . . I propose to record the names of all “old boys” of the school who served in any of his Majesty’s Forces on land or sea”. There follows a list, inserted after the war, of 75 former pupils, the great majority of whom served in the County

Regiment, the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry. The military career of Arthur Gomm was varied and full of incident. On 13 August 1915 he was seriously wounded, “when a fragment of shrapnel shell struck him on the shoulder and passed right through his arm ... The latest news we have of him, we are glad to say, is quite favourable”. However, because of complications to the wound, Arthur Gomm spent twelve months in hospital. In July 1916 he was discharged and joined the Royal Engineers. In March 1917 he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery and served in France. He was eventually demobilised in January 1919. The School Log Book noted on 3 March that, “Mr Gomm resumed duty today after absence on military duty”. He was one of the lucky ones. The Bucks Herald of 8 August 1914 reported that “so far as this district is concerned there is a dearth of topics for comment this week”. Just one week later, the same newspaper noted that over 30 men from Wendover had joined the army; that the Vicar, the Rev C C Sharpe, was conducting daily Intercessions for those at the Front; and that a large number of ladies were “considering what can be done on behalf of the sick and the wounded”. The war had arrived in Wendover.

Youth Matters Chiltern Ridgeway School Chiltern Ridgeway School held their first public meeting on 9 July to outline the vision for the school. Thank you to all those who attended; it was really encouraging to see so many people with a shared passion about our children’s choice of education and we had some great feedback and questions.

We have an opportunity, as a community, to increase the secondary education choice in our local area.

If we are successful in our proposal, Chiltern Ridgeway School will be a small, inclusive, all ability secondary school. The focus will be on the pupil as an individual and on giving the students the life skills they need to flourish. We strongly believe that by introducing class sizes of 20 we can enable teachers to focus on the needs of every member of a class. By providing an extended school day we can encourage pupils to have more engagement with their education and support the development of their life skills. Our intention is to provide a school where children are excited by and enjoy what they are doing. There is a need to prepare our area to meet the growing demand for secondary school places and we are at the beginning of a process of making Chiltern Ridgeway School a reality. Without the support of the local community we

will not be able to progress to the next stage of submitting our application to the Department for Education. If you believe in offering more choice and are interested in the Chiltern Ridgeway School, please sign up on our website as soon as possible www.chilternridgeway.com .

Wendover Youth Centre Holiday Camp There are still spaces left on all four of the multi-activity days we are holding over the summer. On Thu 24 & 31 July and Thu 14 & 21 Aug we are working with Premier Sport to run sports, drama and other fun activities and the whole day will cost less than £13. Please contact Becky or Premier Sport to book or find out more.

The champagne corks have been popping at Calibre Audio Library as the charity celebrates its 40th Anniversary. In 1974, three formidable ladies, Monica McMullen, Ros Thornton and Susan Beazley recorded Calibre’s first book, L. M. Mitchell’s Anne of Green Gables for Susan’s partially-sighted son, James. They used the most modern technology of the time - a cassette recorder - from where the name Calibre is derived. Calibre, which provides audio books for people unable to read print, came to Wendover in 1976, then to the Tindal Hospital, Aylesbury in 1980 before moving to its current location in Weston Turville in 1997. In the early days just one sack of books a day was sent out; now 1,800 books are despatched to tens of thousands of members nationwide. Crime writer and Calibre patron, Simon Brett, who has recently won the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association Diamond Dagger award, gave the keynote speech at a special party. Brenda Horne and Brenda Usherwood, who

between them have volunteered 50 years to the charity, were presented with bouquets and long service badges.

Everyone at the party took away a special 40th Anniversary CD which re-tells the history of Calibre including reminiscences of Kim Corbin, who has worked as Calibre since 1980. Other

highlights include: the visit by Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra; the Prime Minister David Cameron and his Cabinet recording children’s stories; a feature on “Challenge Anneka”; the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award, and the extensive press coverage following an unprecedented amount of requests for Fifty Shades of Grey

from Calibre female members aged over 75yrs.

Chairman Ian Yeoman said: “It is thanks to all our 200 volunteers and staff that Calibre’s service helped over 18,000 people to enjoy the pleasure of reading last year, sending out over 400,000 audio books – that’s an incredible 200 books per hour! Calibre remains unique in offering a subscription-free service to individual members with sight problems, dyslexia or other disabilities which prevent them reading normal print.”

Over 70 local and service schoolchildren took to the skies recently as part of the Young Flyer’s scheme which aims to offer all children, between 8 and 18 years of age, a 20 minute flight in a light aircraft for them to discover the joy and thrill of aviation. The concept originated in the USA as the Young Eagles in 1992 with the aim of flying 1 million children prior to the Centenary of Flight in 2004 and since its inception, over 1.5 million young people have flown for the first time within the programme. Annually, the RAF Halton Aero Club has organised and hosted an event to enable children an opportunity to experience aviation and have been recognised as flying over 20% of the “Young Flyers” in the UK since running the first event at RAF Halton in 2000. The event is completed at the expense of the participating pilots and those on ground duties volunteer their time freely. This year, priority was given to the children of RAF parents serving at RAF, Joint and MOD establishments within a 60-mile radius of RAF Halton. With a significant

number of RAF parents expected, it also provided a great opportunity for the RAF Benevolent Fund to attend and showcase

their latest families’ initiatives. After a briefing the pilots stand in line to be introduced to their passengers, give them a flight safety brief and then take to the skies and they say that the smiles on

the faces of the children is all the thanks they want. Ryan Guest, who just made the age limit due to turning 18 later in the week, said: “It was amazing, the pilot was really good and put me at ease. We were so lucky with the weather and the view was stunning.” Also flying was Bethany Lewsley, aged 10, from Wendover. She said: “It was amazing, I loved it and was able to work out where my house was on the way back.” Neil Burton, who works in the Specialist Training Squadron at RAF Halton was there with his daughter, Elizabeth and her

friend Megan Cronin. Both girls, while posing for their photo with their certificate, said: “It was awesome and so cool. We saw everything and the pilot briefed us about where we were and what we saw. Thank you to our pilot, Rob.” Officer in Charge of the Halton Aero Club, Group Captain Mark Manwaring said “The atmosphere at this year’s Halton Young Flyers was fantastic. The months of planning and preparation paid-off with great weather and a capacity attendance. Over the 4 hours, we flew 107 young aviators around the Vale of Aylesbury from this historic airfield. For the vast majority of the children this was the first time that they had flown in a light aircraft and I am sure that many have left the event with a new-found and hopefully life-long interest in aviation. I first flew with the Air Cadets when I was 14 years old and have no doubt that this first opportunity changed my life and I hope we have given these youngsters the chance to think the same. We are looking forward to next year’s event, which will also commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Halton Aero Club which formed at RAF Halton in 1925. My thanks go to all at RAF Halton that contributed their time and effort to this memorable day.”

Heritage Flight Centre On the morning of Thursday 26 June 2014, at RAF Halton, something rather special happened: a new section of the Trenchard Museum at RAF Halton was opened - the James McCudden Heritage Flight Centre. This centre is designed to inspire young people of all ages to become interested in the technical aspects of flight. Group visits typically feature schools, Air Training Cadets, RAF recruits and U3A group. Contact details: 01296 656841. James Thomas Byford McCudden, VC, DSO and Bar, MC and Bar, MM, CdeG is reputedly “The most highly decorated pilot of the Great War”. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1913 and came to Halton as a mechanic supporting 3 Squadron aircraft during the army manoeuvres in September that year. He went to France with the squadron on the outbreak of war and rose rapidly to Sergeant in charge of engines while seeing combat as an observer and gunner before returning to England for pilot training in 1916. Francis Hanford, curator of the Trenchard Museum at RAF Halton since 1998, was determined to open a centre to inspire the

youngsters of today to take up aero engineering. He chose James McCudden as the ideal icon being both an extremely competent mechanic and an ace fighter pilot. The centre was opened

after 15 short months with the full support of Tom Costello, apprentice 1948-51, who raised £26,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, RAF Charitable Trust and Rolls Royce plc. The paintings hung around the walls were printed from original w a t e r c o l o u r s b y P h i l

Stephenson, an apprentice training at RAF Halton in the late 1930s. One of his paintings (not exhibited) shows RAF Halton on 3 September 1945—the day that war was declared. A display about Frank Whittle, RAF apprentice, explains his story as the inventor of the jet engine. The RAF Charitable Trust funded a flight simulator based on the Chipmunk flying around RAF Halton for visitors to experience. Brian Ellis, an ex-Halton instructor who is chief engineer of the Trenchard Museum, continues to develop educational aids to demonstrate factors affecting flight. His principle projects at the moment are the development of the wind tunnel and the building of a replica aircraft.

News from Wendover Health Centre 01296 623452 Dr. Moreton’s Retirement Dr Philippa Moreton will be retiring on 1 October 2014 as a partner at Wendover Health Centre. She has served the community of Wendover for 34 years as a GP, and she has gained wide respect for her dedication, professionalism and the compassionate care she has given to all her patients. She will be sorely missed, both by the practice staff and her patients.

From 1 August a memory book will be available for patients who wish to record their memories and appreciation of their contact with Dr Moreton over the years. To contribute please visit Reception where the memory book will be kept; alternatively you can send a letter or email to: [email protected] which will be pasted into the book. Please mark your contribution Memory Book, FAO Ms Enfys Lewis.

We will be holding a special event in the Health Centre at the end of September to which all Dr Moreton’s patients will be

welcome. Details will be given in the September Wendover News.

Dr Rashmi Wimalaratna, who was a GP registrar at Wendover and has been working as a locum with us since, will be taking over Dr Moreton’s patient list. If you are regularly consulting with another doctor in the practice and would like to continue seeing them, please discuss this at your next visit.

While Dr Moreton will no longer be seeing patients, we are fortunate not to be losing her completely, as she has agreed to continue to lead a new project aimed at improving care for our elderly patients.

Travel Reminders If you are planning an overseas holiday this year: We offer the full range of vaccinations in our Travel Clinic. Please return completed travel c l i n i c f o r m s ( a v a i l a b l e o n www.westongrove.com) at least eight weeks before your travel date. We also advise on malaria and provide appropriate preventive

medication (on a private prescription) where needed.

Make sure you have suitable travel insurance that covers health emergencies. It is very important that you are truthful about your medical history when buying travel insurance, otherwise you may find yourself facing a huge bill if you get sick while away and have an undeclared medical condition, as the insurance company can refuse to pay your medical fees.

GP Registrars Our current GP registrars are Dr Nana-Aya Dalafu and Dr Cheryl Phillips, who recently returned from maternity leave. GP registrars are fully qualified doctors who are undergoing specialist training in general practice.

Changes to our opening hours We will be closed on Saturday 23 August and Monday 25 August for the Summer Bank Holiday. There is no staff training day in August.

Aylesbury raises flag for Armed Forces Day RAF Halton personnel have supported two Armed Forces Day flag raising events in Aylesbury and Hemel Hempstead. Dignitaries and local people turned out for the short ceremony and in Aylesbury, Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council, Councillor Zafir Mohammed, said: “On behalf of Buckinghamshire County Council I would like to say how proud we are to raise the flag today to commemorate and give thanks to our Armed Forces Family, many of whom are currently serving on operations. Our thoughts are with them and their families as the whole nation joins together this week to pay tribute to them. This year is more important with the anniversary of the start of World War One where so many gave their lives for us.”

Buckinghamshire’s Lord Lieutenant, Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, who took the salute, said: “This is more than a simple flag-raising. This ceremony marks our heartfelt thanks to those in this county who currently serve, have served, or will serve in the armed forces, and it celebrates our very close links in Buckinghamshire between the armed services and local communities.”

Great Missenden honours Armed Forces The Parish Church of St Peter & St Paul was packed on Saturday 28 June for a rousing commemorative Proms Concert.

The concert, organised by Musical Director Fiona Firth of Singers4all (www.singers4all.com ), was the centrepiece of a weekend of Great Missenden events held to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

Fiona’s own choirs were joined by pupils from the Misbourne School Harmony Choir and the Great Missenden CofE Combined School singers for some stirring WW1 and WW2 medleys. The Wick Trimmers, local popular folk band, provided some stirring tributes with “100 Years” and the audience, which included armed services veterans, needed no encouragement, joining in for rousing renditions of “It’s a long way to Tipperary”, “Pack up your troubles”, “My old man said follow the van” and, loudest of all, with flags waving, “Jerusalem".

Fiona said, “So many people put so much effort into this concert that it was wonderful to see such a massive audience in the church. I was very moved by all the lovely comments we received. It was great

to be able to make our own contribution to the country’s week long events to honour our fantastic armed forces.”

To add to the magic and music of the night, Ian Lynch, professional trumpeter accompanied Martin Robson, the well-known Bass singer in a heartening performance of “The Trumpeter” by J Airlie Dix. He also played the haunting melody of “The Last Post” from the back of the church. Two local theatre and TV actors, David Riccardo-Pearce and Marianne Oldham, read pieces from Noel Coward, Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brook and Robert W. Service.

Photos of loved ones who had served in the armed forces were projected on a big screen, bringing back poignant memories for many of the singers and congregation. A moving tribute to end a wonderful evening's entertainment.

Paying too much for your water? Further to Rachel Garver’s letter in the April edition of Wendover News, Parish Councillor and Wendover Society Member Tom Walsh noticed a charge on his water bill from Thames Water for Surface Water Drainage. He was aware that no water from his property ended up in a Thames Water Sewer. He raised this issue with

Thames Water which resulted in a reduction of around £40 in his bill.

Tom told TWS Chairman Mike Beard about this. Mike, who lives in Walnut Drive, called Thames Water who sent him a simple application form. Within about a week Mike had a letter from Thames Water to say that his claim was successful and his next bill would be reduced.

It seems that few houses in Wendover are discharging surface water into Thames Water sewers. For example it might be that all the new properties at PMG are overpaying. Checking your own position is very simple. Just call Thames Water on 0845 641 0086 and ask for a claims form.

More surface water information Earlier this year, you printed a letter telling us that residents of Wendover were no longer liable to pay for surface water drainage since 2001. Some of us contacted Thames Water to apply for rebates and were unhappy to learn that they were not going to backdate any of our claims. We therefore contacted the Water Consumers Council, who on our behalf, convinced Thames Water that they could have tried harder to contact residents when they first became aware

that a whole village was affected by the changes of 2001.

As a result, Thames Water have agreed to pay back six years overpayments to everybody in the village, where applicable. They claim this will take quite a while to achieve but I hoped you could let your readers know that they can expect a rebate of up to £128 (2008-2013) as well as the payment of £25 being deducted from this year’s bill. The Water Consumers Council also assure me that they will ensure that Thames Water carry out this action. I would like to thank Rachel Garver, the lady who wrote the article which led us to this outcome.

From Butcher’s Boy to Beefeater Geoff Abbott is the author of From Butcher's Boy to Beefeater, and has a local connection. Geoff was sent to RAF Halton for his training when he was 17, just days before the declaration of war. To say Geoffrey Abbott has lived an extraordinary life is something of an understatement. From humble beginnings, working in a butcher’s shop, Geoff proceeded to: serve in the RAF during WWII, endure a torpedo attack, join a big-

game hunter on safari, befriend astronaut David Scott, “behead” the likes of Tony Robinson and Helen Skelton on TV, become something of a torture connoisseur, live in the Tower of London, and offer his opinion on the execution of Saddam Hussein. Needless to say, at the age of 92, Geoff shows no signs of slowing down – in fact he’s taken to flying helicopters on weekends. His 25th book From Butcher’s Boy to Beefeater is his account of the remarkable things life has thrown his way.

His previous books include: A Grisly Guide to the Tower of London, The Executioner Always Chops Twice and Execution: A Guide to the Ultimate Penalty. His TV appearances include: The Bloody Tower of London (USA), The Tower of London (Channel 4), History of Punishment and Torture (Channel 5) and Blue Peter (CBBC).

Local News The Dandy Kid: best children’s shop Wendover based Children’s boutique, The Dandy Kid has won the Best Children’s Shop award in the popular Muddy Stilettos Awards, celebrating fantastic places, spaces and businesses across Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

The Children’s boutique, which opened its doors in February, won a closely fought race in a competition that saw over 10,000 people nominate and 50,000 votes cast for the best independent businesses across 25 categories.

Commenting on the award Becks Clarke, co-founder of The Dandy Kid said: “Since launching we’ve been bowled over by the support we’ve received both locally and from within the industry. To win an award just three months after opening is something we’re immensely proud of and we’re very grateful to all our customers and supporters for voting for us.”

“The timing couldn’t be better” added Sarah Beattie, co-founder, “we are just about to launch our website with some exciting new suppliers, we can’t wait to share it with everybody!”

Hero Brown, founder of the Muddy Stilettos blog adds: “I set up these awards to give local lifestyle businesses a chance to show how brilliant they are. The Dandy Kid is a great new addition to the High Street, they offer something refreshingly different so it’s fantastic to see the local community getting behind them.”

The Dandy Kid sells kids paraphernalia; clothes, toys, gifts and accessories selected from cool independent brands, designers and nice creative people around the globe. The aim is simple – to source goods with fun, bold, quality design that’s a little bit quirky and different.

Parking At the July meeting of the Local Area Forum (LAF), one of the priorities cited was parking. This follows on from years of petitioning by Wendover Parish Council. Our County Councillor, Chris Adams, has been charged to consult local residents to identify issues of concern, and then to identify the possible options to resolve these and to agree priorities with local people. Please pass on your concerns to Chris to ensure that he is aware of all the

issues relating to parking before he begins the process of looking at options and priorities. Contact details: c/o County Hall, Walton Street, Aylesbury, Bucks, HP20 1UA; mobile: 07968 444222; [email protected] by Friday 15 August.

Support Project Extended SCSN is delighted to announce that following the success of the Service and Veteran Children Support Project in Buckinghamshire the provision is now being extended to other counties.

The project, which has been previously funded by the MOD £3M fund and LIBOR, has developed over the past four years to support Service, Veteran, Reservist and Bereaved Service children, birth to 18 years in settings and schools with both small and large numbers of Service Children on roll.

The project, which was initially requested by parents, has been well received by pupils, parents and schools alike, and offers targeted and bespoke support for children during key times such as transitions in and out of the school and when parents are away.

It doesn’t have to be for long – just a couple of hours every week or so would help enormously. If you think you could help, please give us a call on 01296 317769. Wendover Bowls Club The outdoor season continues with “friendly” matches against local clubs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons most weekends, both home and away. These can comprise Rinks (4 players per team) or Triples (3 players per team) depending on availability of players. The matches are followed by a light meal in the Clubhouse and a drink from the Bar if required.

Our ladies have reached the quarter finals of the Bucks County Trundell Trophy and will be playing against Chesham Bowls Club on 24 August at High Wycombe (neutral ground). Good luck to them. Our lady player Thelma Leslie reached the semi finals of the Ladies County Singles but lost narrowly to Bletchley Town, an excellent achievement. Our men, Tony Brindley, Richard Orszynski and John Brooks reached the quarter finals of the Mens County Triples and made a sterling effort against Woburn Sands Bowls Club. Well done. The Club ran a Gala Day on 22 June when Teams from Clubs all around the area played against each other and were provided with lunch and various refreshments throughout the day. The day was a great success. There is always something going on at the Club so you are welcome to come along.

Tuesday afternoons members meet for a “Roll Up” and we have August home matches Sunday 6 (2.30pm) Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 (2.30pm) Plus evening league matches on Wed 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30

August, all starting at 6.15pm.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers Association We will be running a stand promoting Beekeeping in the Home and Garden marquee at the Bucks Show on 28 August. July with it’s warm weather was an excellent beekeeping month with good forage for the bees, many of our members are reporting increased honey harvests compared to recent years. Our last Summer meeting will be held on 20 August at 18.30 in the Association Apiary, the theme being “Preparing for Winter”. For a full list of our events go to www.mbbka.org.uk.

Wendover Cricket Club Juniors As the end of the junior cricket season approaches, the juniors section of the Wendover Cricket Club celebrated with their annual presentation day on 12 June. It was a chance for the age groups to come together and share their experiences over the past few months.

The morning began with the younger players taking part in a team event involving a number of cricket related activities. The winning team not only gained the accolade of winners, but also got a box of chocolates each, yum! During this time parents were able to enjoy the sunshine with a nice cup of tea and a chat with friends.

Following on from the games, the presentation began with kind words from the club’s vice-

chairman Nick Morley. The club likes to acknowledge the participation of all of our junior members. Every child received a medal for their involvement this season, including our youngest members in the U7s, after all, they are the future of the club! All other age groups play competitive cricket and therefore a number of different awards in acknowledgement of consistent performance throughout the season were presented. Each of the age group managers highlighted the team’s overall performance and then announced individual winners who received their awards from the club’s vice-chairman. The winners of can be found at www.wendovernews.co.uk/news/wjc-report-summer-2014 . Well done everyone! All teams played well this season and resulted in finals for three of them. Final results and details of the Village Cup will be published in next month’s edition.

The club would also like to thank all of the volunteers and parents, there are too many to name individually. The club is only as successful as it is because of the time that you all give to it, whether that is managing a team, helping with teas or just supporting the players when they train and play matches. A big thank you to everyone involved and we look forward to seeing you all next season!

Canal Towpath We are regular visitors to Wendover, the Antique Fair, the Market, and the excellent Library. While in Wendover we often take the chance to stroll along the Canal towpath, the path has become flooded in a couple of places, and is difficult to use. There seems to be much plant growth in the canal, not sure who is responsible for keeping the canal flowing, but it seems something needs to be done.

D. Freeman Ed: Wendover News is awaiting reply from the Canal and River Trust on this question.

Footpaths Residents of Wendover parish should be aware that BCC has this year cut back drastically the budget for maintaining our footpaths. Volunteers are increasingly

being expected to shoulder responsibility for this work, and there is every reason to fear that some of our paths may be permanently lost to us as they become overgrown and eventually impassable. The future looks bleak both for the paths, and for the income Wendover derives from walkers.

Cycling for Arthritis Research UK On 10 August I shall be taking part in the Prudential Ride London cycle event. This is a 100 mile ride which follows the course of the 2012 Olympic road race, starting at the Olympic village in East London, crossing to the southwest then down through the Surrey hills to return to finish on The Mall.

I am riding on behalf of Arthritis Research UK, and my aim is to raise a minimum of £600. I am currently just short of the half way mark.

I have suffered with arthritis from the age of five and am now in my late fifties, originally I had Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis which has now left me with the delightful gift of Osteoarthritis of the right hip and both shoulders.

Those of you who also have arthritis or know someone who has, know how painful and debilitating it can be.

Any medication currently available has side-effects sometimes as bad as the disease itself. What we need is a cure.

Please help by sponsoring me, any amount is gratefully accepted. You can donate through my justgiving account, www.justgiving.com/Peter-Littlewood3 or, if you do not have internet access, a sponsorship form can be found at The Clock Tower office. Thank you in anticipation.

Many Wendover residents have asked me about the House of Commons Select Committee which has now begun its detailed consideration of the Bill to authorise the construction of HS2.

Probably the easiest way to describe how the Committee functions is to think of a panel of MPs acting in place of a Planning Inspector in a public inquiry that covers a development proposal spread across many different local council areas.

There are six MPs on the panel. All are backbench MPs though some have served as Ministers in the past. They must be people whose constituencies are unaffected by HS2 and of course they must not have any personal financial interest in the project.

Their task is to work their way through the nearly 2,000 petitions that have been sent in seeking amendments to the Bill. The Committee hears from the petitioners and from any witnesses whom the petitioners call to give evidence, and from the lawyers acting for HS2 Ltd.

All the Committee members are MPs who are used in their constituency work to dealing with people of all types. They will expect people giving evidence to have prepared their arguments and to be courteous and even tempered, but they won’t, any more than in their own constituency surgeries, expect everyone to be brimming with self-confidence and comfortable with public speaking. So there is no need to feel intimidated by the process.

I h a v e p o s t e d o n m y w e b s i t e www.davidlidington.com details of how the Committee works. There is also a lot of information on Parliament’s website at www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/high-speed-rail-london-west-midlands-bill-select-committee-commons/ or just Google “HS2 Committee” and follow the links.

Parliament live-streams Committee hearings at www.parliamentlive.tv with links from the Committee’s website to the video record of older sessions. So you can get an idea of how the Committee goes about its business by tuning in.

The Committee has decided to start with the Birmingham area. If they then work south, I would expect Buckinghamshire petitions to be heard some time in 2015.

I have put in two petitions myself: one dealing with the whole stretch of route through my constituency and the second, jointly with Cheryl Gillan, focusing on the need for a Chilterns Tunnel. I have also, along with Cheryl and John Bercow, written to the Committee urging them to reject the argument by HS2 Ltd that the HS2 Action Alliance and Stop HS2 should not be accepted as petitioners. In addition, I am always willing to talk in confidence to constituents who want to discuss their personal circumstances, for example over compensation.

Wendover Junior School OFSTED Following an OFSTED inspection held on 24—25 June, Wendover Church of England Junior School has been judged to “Require Improvement”.

Whilst we are obviously disappointed with this judgement, we are reassured that the inspectors recognised that the school has already begun its journey to improvement. Critically, the inspectors agreed that the school leaders and governors “have identified the key areas for improvement and promptly taken action to address these” and that ”current assessment information and work in pupils’ books show progress is speeding up and many pupils have achieved well since the start of the year”.

In the week the report was published we received the 2014 SATs results. We were delighted that the results were the best the school has achieved for over three years and showed that pupils are now making rapid progress, particularly in mathematics. In maths, provisional results

show that this year there has been a 17% increase in pupils getting a Level 4+, a 12% increase in those getting Level 5+ and a 15% increase in those achieving Level 6.

Jenny Bartlett, Acting Head, said, “Although we were disappointed with the overall judgement, the inspectors’ positive comments and this year’s excellent SATs results confirm that this is now a rapidly improving school.” The inspectors judged that the school’s existing action plan is the right one for the school to return to being judged Good or better before its next inspection, which will be in approximately 18 months’ time.

Mock UN debate at John Colet Eight Year 9 students from the John Colet School, joined their peers from other local secondary schools in a Mock United Nations conference in June. The students had been preparing for the conference since January. At the beginning of June all students met for a mock debate at The Oculus. On Friday 27 June all pupils met at the Aylesbury Vale

District Council Chambers, where the conference was held. Aaron Gomm from John Colet school said, "I am really glad I got involved it was fun, exciting, educational and it definitely improved my public speaking skills. “

Chemistry at Work at John Colet On Friday 4 July the science department ran a “Chemistry at Work” day. This involved nine external speakers talking to groups of year 9 students about how they use chemistry in the workplace. During the morning session, the speakers explained the importance of chemistry in different industries. The scheme, called Chemistry in Action, is run by Derek Jones of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Year 9 student Luke Webb said: “We learnt all sorts of useful facts and information, varying from police fingerprints to worms’ lifestyles. I found the ‘fight or flight’ talk the most interesting and relevant as it linked in with some of my favourite lessons such as PE. All the talks and demonstrations were informative as well as enjoyable.”

Francis Hanford came to Wendover in 1996. On retiring from the RAF he had found a job as a civilian instructor at Halton and settled into his 26th home with his wife Margaret. She soon found a job in a local nursing home and voluntary activities with the Friends of the Health Centre and the Hospice Shop. He settled into his new job and lifestyle and tried to bring house and garden to order. As he assimilated into his new occupation he became aware of a small museum in two rooms in the Old Workshops which had been started and sponsored by the Halton Apprentice Association. He started to help the curator, who worked in his department, and then found himself in charge when his friend was promoted and posted away. It became his baby and the sponsors, without telling him, negotiated its removal to a much larger building. Filling the new space was a challenge, eventually solved by borrowing a 1943 glider and placing it so that it took up as much space as possible. Thus Viscount Trenchard, the grandson of the man who laid the foundations of the present RAF, was able to open the Trenchard Museum on 26 June 1999. At his point there were very few visitors and this was just as well as Margaret had been diagnosed as having cancer and was to die a year later. Facing life alone, Francis was very fortunate in having an interesting job and the museum to occupy his leisure. There was much to be done.

Finding new exhibits lead to the need to reorganise the displays with new labels and a search for supplementary items or spares to bring the scenario to life. Mannequins were needed to show off uniforms and the art of dressing them had to be learned. Friends were persuaded to make models of significant aircraft and items in dark corners were relocated, usually with their owner’s consent. The museum began to be more credible. The year 2002 was notable for three things: he was persuaded to join the Halton Singers, he recruited Brian Ellis to join him as his chief engineer and he discovered that a significant historical landmark was approaching. He could not and cannot sing but the singers’ rehearsals added interest and introduced him to Jean who was to become his wife. With Brian he could tackle more challenging projects and learn more about the engineering that had been fundamental to RAF Halton’s history. Also, Brian had friends in the engineering world. Meanwhile, having learned that 1913 was when the first aircraft landed at Halton, he was able to research and plan for a 90th anniversary commemoration which would bring much needed publicity. The event happened and though it was not quite the success hoped for it brought more visitors including many of the parents of recruits attending graduation parades.

Remarried in 2005 with a busy job and museum to run, there was still time to take part in Gilbert and Sullivan and other shows twice a year. Also, with Jean’s company the pleasures of the London theatres and exhibitions gave added spice to life. With retirement approaching the museum did receive a lot of attention and, with the help of Brian’s contacts;

they managed to get hold of their premier exhibit, the Folland Gnat aircraft. This became the collection’s centre-piece and it enhanced its whole atmosphere enormously, attracting enormous interest from all age groups. There have been many special acquisitions since but none as welcome and significant. With the museum’s growth has come a steady increase in the team of volunteers who help to develop and run it. They have brought fresh expertise and enthusiasm to the whole project. The collection and visitor numbers grow steadily and recently we have been able to branch out into the teaching of the principals of flight and the fostering of “air mindedness” by building up and opening of the James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre in a separate building. We were delighted to have Viscount Trenchard return, 15 years to the day after the first opening, to perform the ceremony. Will Francis rest now? Probably not.

View from the Chair Every two years I hold a charity Ball/Event to raise funds for two charities close to my heart. This year a Cocktails and Casino event was held at the Village Gate. Over £3k was raised which will benefit Rennie Grove Hospice Care and Prostate Cancer UK. Thanks to Mark and his staff at the Village Gate, my two special guests, Suzy Bookbinder and Bill Giles who did a sterling job encouraging folks to buy raffle tickets, and to Mr Kites Benefit band who contributed to an excellent evening free of charge. Thanks also to the event committee who worked hard over the last six months organising the event. Most of all my special thanks to all those who turned up on the night and had a good evening to boot.

Robert Duggan, Chairman

Our New Councillors Andrew Morrison has lived in Wendover for 17 years with his wife and two children. He regularly enjoys the local pubs and restaurants with friends and family and shops locally. As a regular cyclist, he is keen to expand on the work done so far in building cycle paths and promoting the environmental and health benefits of cycling. He is also interested in promoting the canal area with Wendover Arm Trust. He is a Sales Director for a Vehicle Security Company based in Cranfield, Bedfordshire (part of The Danaher Corporation) and has always worked in the automotive industry. Having lived in Wendover since 1997, in four locations, he feels he has a good understanding of the issues and concerns faced by the residents of the village such

as parking, speeding, dog fouling, HS2 and noise from late night revellers in the village centre.

David Haywood has lived here for nearly 25 years with his wife and son and been actively involved in the life of the Village. This has included support for the PTA at all three local Schools, Wendover Junior Football Club, support for swimming and Life-saving badges at Wendover Pool, Beavers, Cubs and Scout camps.

He was CEO of the International Electronic Publishing Research Centre and latterly Dean at the University of the Arts in London.

Now retired, his involvement in local organisations has continued, he is a Committee Member of Wendover HS2 and the Chiltern Humanists. He has a great interest in music related activities and is seeking to give increased support to the Wendover community.

The Manor Waste Survey Outcome The Parish Council would like to thank all of you who took part in our survey about the future of the Manor Waste. 90% of the 254 responders use the Manor Waste on a daily or weekly basis. Confirming that the area is very important to village life.

A significant number of people gave the opinion that the Manor Waste was currently in good condition. Unfortunately, with around 300 broken paving slabs and an increase in trip hazards and trip incidents

across the cobbled areas, close inspection doesn’t support that opinion. The area is overdue a major refurbishment. To stand on the Manor Waste and watch some users struggle to cope with the areas of increasing unevenness, particularly those villagers that depend on walking frames and trolleys to assist with their balance, clearly points to a need to do something soon.

The survey results indicate that people do like the Manor Waste much as it is. Buff paving with a contrasting grey replacement for the cobbles was the popular choice. The general feeling being that traditional features were valued but that modern additions were OK if they added something to the areas usefulness.

More seating, a community notice board, increased litter bins and more bike racks, while not always unopposed, have sufficient following to be worth considering in the revised design.

In addition to survey ideas the Parish Council is also considering providing a safe electrical supply for market traders and event organisers. This should reduce the need for the noisy generators that are currently used. A water point to help with cleaning up, better bollards that resist impact and a speed hump across the entrance to Budgens car park are also likely to feature in the new design.

Our project managers will now take the survey results and the Parish Council’s ideas and come up with a finished design. You’ve told us that it should look much like the current Manor Waste. It will be safer, stronger and we hope it will serve the village for another 40yrs.
