Greetings! We’ve breezed through most of the Summer already, and for some of our Kids, it’s already “Back to School” time. Especially, if you’re on a Year ‘Round schedule. Either way, we’re so thrilled to have the support again this year of Operation

Homefront, with FREE school supplies. We are also extremely lucky to again have the support of John Deere and Wells Fargo. Please look inside and find the “Back-to-School” event Flyers. Across the State, you’ll see many of our Family Assistance Centers and Staff will be out at a variety of locations to pass out those FREE supplies. Please visit the location closest to your home. It is always an honor to have the assistance of individuals and businesses that show their support of you, our NC National Guard service members and our Families. Their actions benefit our Kids … an, lighten the load. I would also like to highlight some of our other upcoming events. There’s a Kids on Guard happening on August 9, in Rocky Mount at the Imperial Center. It’s a great facility that you, and your children, will enjoy. We also have our weekend Kids on Guard camp September 26-28 at Camp Butner. Please sign up soon, since the slots are filling up fast. Our Chaplains have two (2) Strong Bonds Retreats coming up. A Marriage Retreat in August 22-24 and a Family Retreat September 12-14. Please visit our Website for more information, or give SSG Tammy Fowler a call if you have questions. If you have already done so, please join us on Facebook, where you’ll find the lastest and greatest that we know and wish to share with you… from photos, to upcoming events, free/discounted deals, and more. I hope that you have a safe and fun rest of the Summer. See you in the FALL!Sincerely,

Prep for Back to School…by Kristi Wagner, NCNG Child and Youth Programs

Five key tips to making the transition back to school go smoothly…

Avoiding Summer Brain Drain – Keep their minds active with a daily dose of reading and stimulating activities or outings. Reading, even a even a magazine about their favorite shows or video games, anything they are interested in, is helpful. Make everyday grocery shopping or fixing dinner into a fun and stimulating math, or science lesson. Simple vacation outings to museums or landmarks make great lessons to keep their minds active.12

5

Bedtime Routines – Keeping a good bedtime routine is a must, especially for younger children or kids with any type of learning challenges. We all have special occasions or vacations that we bend the rules on bedtime for, but having time to wind down and relax from a stimulating activity is important for a good night’s rest. If you have adjusted sleep routines for summer don’t expect to change them back the night before school starts, a gradual change is best and will make for well rested children as they return to the school routine.

Get Prepared for Homework – Setting up an area and time for homework is very important. This should be based on your own child's abilities. If they work well independently, need some help, or need quiet, while others may need background noise. Finding what works best for your child is the best and will be the most productive. Remembering how you feel after a long day at work some kids will need a break after school before starting homework while others just want to get it done. Be careful of those procrastinators through, and don't fall into the trap of them saying they never have homework. Having good communication with the Teachers will help avoid the surprise Progress Reports and with missing assignments..

Back to School Supplies/Clothing – Before you jump out and buy some, perhaps unnecessary items for back to school, it is best you check your school website for the supply list and dress codes. This is especially true for middle and high school students, most teachers require specific items for class. So just buy items that are always needed like paper, pens and pencils and leave other items until open house when teachers usually hand out a list of items particular to their class. Knowing school dress code rules avoids spending on clothing items that will not be appropriate for school also check with gym teachers or coaches on specific items needed for those classes/sports.

Morning Routines – Your morning routine is what makes or breaks the mood for the day. If you're like most people, being rushed and not able to find something you need for the day in the morning, sets the tone for the rest of the day. Prepping the night before avoids this problem, check the weather and choose an outfit, pack lunches and sign any paperwork that needs to be returned to school and place backpacks coats gym bags etc near the door. Also setting a wake up time and shower routines avoids everyone trying to be in the bathroom at once. Always leave enough time for breakfast, and the unexpected. To make a pleasant start to the day, allow your child to arrive at school in a good mood. This will make the learning experience more productive.

ABA Pilot Coverage Extends Past July 24 The law creating the TRICARE Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Pilot expires on July 24, 2014, but TRICARE has extended this coverage until Dec. 31, 2014 when beneficiaries will transition to the new TRICARE Autism Care Demo (ACD). This ensures no beneficiaries receiving ABA will have a gap in coverage.

The ACD technically kicks off on July 25, but it won’t go into effect until the end of the year. TRICARE will use the time to flesh out all the details of the program and fully educate affected beneficiaries about the new benefit. The delay also allows beneficiaries in each of the three current ABA programs to transition to this single unified benefit.

Beneficiaries covered under the ABA Pilot, the ABA Demo and TRICARE Basic coverage of ABA don’t need to do anything to continue their coverage. They, as well as any new enrollees, will transition seamlessly to the ACD, and TRICARE will work with their ABA providers to get new referrals and authorization once it is needed.

To learn more about the TRICARE ABA coverage, and to sign up for updates on the ACD, visit www.tricare.mil/ACD.

As part of our Teen Council By-laws, all Teen Councils will perform Community Service. Our project at the Teen Retreat was giving back to the North Carolina National Guard. The teens supported the staff at Fort Fisher Training Center by painting, weeding and doing general clean-up work around the site. Some of us were wondering, what was really being painted, the teens or the curbing...

Our retreat included an offsite visit to the Oak Island Coast Guard Station and Lighthouse. Everyone enjoyed learning about the boats/cutter the Coast Guard station has and how they are one of the five armed forces of the US and the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard is a unique instrument of maritime safety, security and environmental stewardship. After our visit, we headed over to UNCW to visit the Film Studies Department. Dr. David Monaham, Department Chair, discussed how the film industry in Wilmington was a factor in creating the Film Studies Department. Dr. Monaham discussed the cinematic language and analysis and did a scene breakdown of one of the Harry Potter movies. We were also able to tour their film studio, equipment room and computer lab.

We would like to extend a big “Thank You” to the staff at Fort Fisher Training Center for all their support!!!!

Many of the teens have already asked “what are we going to do next year” so please let us know your thoughts on this. Our Teen Council meetings will start back in September so be sure to check a little further in this newsletter for the upcoming dates/locations. Please check the NCNG Public Website, NCNG FP Facebook, Twitter for upcoming events and sign up on Joint Services Support, www.jointservicessupport.org to receive our emails.

27 July – 1 August we will head to Millstone 4H Camp in Ellerbe for the 2014 NCNG Youth Camp (ages 8-13). Be sure to check NCNG FP Facebook for pictures we will be posting and the August Family Matters for what went on during our Youth Camp.

** Images provided by NCNG Family Programs Child and Youth Programs

If you check the pictures on NCNG FP Facebook you will see some of the fun we had (pool, beach, training, community service, etc.). We were fortunate this year to have support from YES Project!! whose interns help to expand our leadership, communication and team building skills through such fun activities as “Helium Hula Hoops”,” Chocolate River”, “Toxic Wastes” , “Magic Carpet” and “It Takes Two/Back to Back”. Through a grant from Operation Military Kids everyone attending received their CPR/First Aid/AED certificate that is good for two years. The CPR certification will help teens meet the 2014-15 NC Healthy Living Essential Standard requirements in high school.
