Dear Friends in Faith and Partners in Christ, As we move into the fall, we will be moving back to some familiar territory as we resume our three worship service schedule (8:30, 10:45 am and 5 pm) and Sunday School (9:40 am), on August 18th. It will be nice to be “back in the groove.” However, we will also be trying on some new things this fall that will enhance and grow the ministry of Christ at First Presbyterian as we continue to be led by God’s Holy Spirit. We will kick off Sunday School on August 18th with a Kick-Off Celebration in the Chapel, complete with refreshments, a puppet show and introduction of teachers and curriculum. We have some of the best teachers in Jefferson City and we want you and your children to meet them on August 18th at 9:30 am, and to experience the Augsburg Fortress curriculum that is relevant, faithful and exciting! You are also invited to check out the Adult Classes. Our Christian current events class in the upstairs library (led by Jim McAdams and Cynthia Quetsch), the Bible study in the McAffee room (led by Tom and Virginia Holt) and the theology class (led by Rev. Erickson and Rev. Cain) in the Chapel, give us diverse Adult study options to explore. On September 8th (after Labor Day) we will be starting our fall Sunday evening schedule with something for everyone from 3:30 to 4:45 pm. We will continue to have Presbyterian Children’s Fellowship with food, fun, music and learning, led by our Christian Education Director, Marilyn Hofmann and music leaders, Corey Burkhardt and Chris Ambrose. We are introducing a Youth Choir for sixth grade through 12th grade under the direction of Westminster Music Professor, Dr. Natasia Sexton. This youth choir will be singing periodically at the morning and evening services. And for adults, we will have an outstanding Bible study course, Kergyma, led by Pastors Rob and Dave and Elder Sharon Keating in the parlor. All these afternoon activities will finish at 4:45 allowing people to participate in the Sunday Night Live @5 contemporary worship led by the Praise team and Pastor Zac Wolfe. It should be a wonderful compliment to the music and study that we are already doing at First Presbyterian Church. Join us to study, worship and serve.

Yours in Christ, Rev. Rob Erickson

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT COMMON GROUND

Our Ecumenical Ministry at Common Ground is growing each month, and along with the growth comes increased need for the Center to be open more hours – and the need for more volunteers. Our church family has been asked to provide volunteers for each Friday from 9:00 am until 12:00 n. Kristen Hilty, Common Ground Director will now be in her office at Common Ground on Friday mornings for appointments with clients. Our volunteers will serve as greeters for those who come, help with the filling out of Intake Forms, answer phones and set appointments. The need on Fridays is great because Samaritan Center is closed on Fridays. Two volunteers are needed for each Friday. Contact Pastor Dave if you would like to volunteer or would like more information.

Prayer Pals As we start the new school year, we want to pray for young people as part of our Prayer Pals program. This is a new program started in our

church to connect our youth with the members of the congregation, and for the youth to realize that they are part of a large family - their church family. It is intended to do just what it says “pray for a specific young person.” The (adult) prayer may send notes or cards (especially for special occasions). We will contact parents to make sure that it is ok to be praying for their children. The Christian Education Committee is excited about this new program and appreciates the willingness of the congregation to participate. If you have questions, do not hesitate to talk to Marilyn Hofmann, Pastor Rob, or Barb Slevin.

A Summary of July 14, 2013 Special Session Meeting

The Session met in special called-meeting following morning worship. Laura Robinett, a Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) gave a brief presentation of YAV, a program of Presbyterian World Mission. Laura’s YAV assignment is Hollywood, California. Motion was made to endorse Laura’s as a Young Adult Volunteer. This was approved. Ms. Robinett was also authorized to present a special Minute for Mission at the Sunday worship service on July 28, 2013. Young Adult Volunteers must raise funds for their own support during their year of service. Laura’s minimum is $6,300.

The Meeting was adjourned at 11:25 am. The next regular meeting of Session will be 6:30 pm, August 13, 2013.

College Student Addresses It is time for us to begin to collect student addresses (it means food for them). Please grab a green card and return it, or just email the church office ([email protected]), with your student’s address. We need ALL addresses, even if they haven’t changed from last year. Just update us, please!

Youth Sunday - August 11 at 10:00 am You are especially encouraged to come to worship on Youth Sunday, August 11th at 10:00 am. Youth who have participated in REACH Workcamp, Triennium and Montreat will be leading worship and sharing some of their faith-developing experiences. Afterward, there will be a meal provided by the parents of those who participated. Come and share the life-changing experiences of our youth as they share with us!

GREETINGS, ADULT SINGERS-

In a few short weeks the adult choir will return to the chancel area for worship on Sunday mornings! In preparation for our first Sunday morning anthem on August

18, we will begin choir practice Wednesday night, August 14 at 7 pm in the choir room. As I begin my second year with you, I look forward to another year of making beautiful music for Sunday worship and exploring ways that our music ministry may expand. All adult singers are invited to join me in my home for a potluck lunch on Sunday, August 18 between 1 and 3 pm. Following our meal, we will discuss the upcoming year and share ideas for musical and spiritual growth together. Anyone who has interest in the choir is invited—whether you have sung for decades or if you are considering joining us for the first time; simply bring an easy potluck dish and RSVP to me by August 16 at [email protected].

Peace, Natasia Sexton

of Judy & Bill Robinett, who will be spending the next year in mission as a PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteer. Laura will be working with La Casa de la Comunidad and other urban ministries that work in the neighbor-hood. While “Hollywood” conjures up images of fame and fortune, the region is actually one of the lowest income areas of Los Angeles. On any given night in Los Angeles County, there are 60,000 to 100,000 peo-ple living on the streets with Hollywood itself being home to thousands of homeless teens and young adults.

It’s That Time of the Year: Annual Kits for Kids Mission

Join us in collecting and preparing mission kits for Church World Service and the Festival of Sharing. Beginning on August 4th, a Mission Display in Knox Hall will provide information on what is needed for this year’s kits. We’ll be making kits to go around the world and to serve folks here in Missouri. On August 24th we really kick off the year by joining together in mission to assemble the kits - it’s amazing how fast that goes with a lot of help! We’ll also be installing our new Coordinating Team to lead PW activities over the coming year.

Join a Circle This Fall!

Many of us have enjoyed membership in a PW Circle for years (decades?), but part of the fun is being joined by new members! Our three Circles are welcoming new members as we prepare to begin this year’s Bible Study, “An Abiding Hope: The Presence of God in Exodus and Deuteronomy.” Our current Circles are: Faith Circle - Meets the 2nd Tuesday at 1:30 at Heisinger Afternoon Circle - Meets the 2nd Thursday at 12:45 pm at church. Coral Circle - Meets the 3rd Tuesday at 7:00pm at members’ homes. If you’d like to join a Circle, but these times don’t work, talk to Cynthia Quetsch about the possibility of helping start a new Circle!

Calling all Church Youth! First Presbyterian Church is excited to announce the beginning of a new youth choir for all members (and friends of church members) who are beginning 6th-12th grade this fall! Our adult choir director, Dr. Natasia Sexton, will lead rehearsals on Sunday afternoons from 4 to 4:45 pm in the chapel beginning on Sunday, September 8. There will be an informational meeting for all youth and their parents following worship on Sunday morning, August 11, in the chapel area. Regardless of your musical background, if you love music and are interested in sharing your faith through song, plan to come to the informational meeting on August 11! Please contact Dr. Sexton at [email protected] if you have questions before the August 11 meeting.

We begin our “regular schedule of two worship services and Sunday School on August 18th. A Kick-Off Extraordinaire is being planned by the Christian Education Committee. Just to tease you - puppets, balloons and grapes are involved. Look on our website (www.fpcjcmo.org) for a “trailer.”

All children and youth (and their parents) will meet in the Chapel for our opening at 9:30 am. After a few minutes, each class will be led by their teachers to their Sunday School rooms (mid-highs and a parent will meet in the gym with Pastor Henry to learn more about the Confirmation plans for this year).

Special treats will follow in Knox Hall. Join us for an amazing time, as we re-connect and begin our new Sunday School year!
