TODAY’S WORSHIP FOCUS
The Christian trusts God to provide. The Prayer of the Day
summarizes the theme for today: God reveals his mighty
power chiefly in showing mercy and kindness. God feeds
hungry mouths and hungry souls with his gifts of grace.
When we bring our problems to Jesus, he will richly supply all
we need.

INVOCATION AND GREETING
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
C: And also with you.
CONFESSION OF SINS
M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love
and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him
and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us
confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.
C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.
In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not
deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my
Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing
love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the
perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has
removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God
give you strength to live according to his will.
C: Amen.
M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
The Invocation
recalls the words
of Holy Baptism
where the Triune
God put his
name on us.
The Greeting
expresses the
Christian love
that exists in a
congregation,
and is from 2
Corinthians
13:14.
Confession and
Absolution are a
significant and
powerful part of
a worship
service. By faith
you can hear
God’s voice
speaking words
of forgiveness!
5
We just heard
that our sins are
forgiven. In
response to that
wonderful news,
we praise God by
confessing his
goodness and
the certainty we
have as we take
refuge in him.
OH, TASTE AND SEE
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: O God, you reveal your mighty power chiefly in showing mercy
and kindness. Grant us the full measure of your grace that we
may obtain your promises and become partakers of your
heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 55:1-5
“Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
Give ear and come to me;
hear me, that your soul may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
my faithful love promised to David.
See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander of the peoples.
Surely you will summon nations you know not,
and nations that do not know you will hasten to you,
because of the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel,
for he has endowed you with splendor.”
God wants to
provide for our
needs—both our
physical and
spiritual needs.
The invitation is
for “all” and the
cost is “free.”
With the
message of
forgiveness, God
feeds his people
with love that will
not end!

This song is
based on the
first verse of
Psalm 42. We
are reminded
that God alone
provides all that
we need.
Any creation of
God is essentially
good. The gifts
God gives to us
should be
received with
thanksgiving.
HYMN
P. 14 LAPPY | As the Deer
SECOND LESSON 1 Timothy 4:4-5
For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be
rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated
by the word of God and prayer.

VERSE OF THE DAY
The disciples saw
the problem, but
not the solution.
Jesus would show
them the kind of
gracious Lord
that he is! Trust
in your Lord; he
will provide!

Gospel Lesson Matthew 14:13-21
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat
privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him
on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he
had compassion on them and healed their sick.
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This
is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away,
so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them
something to eat.”
9
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they
answered.
“Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to
sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and
looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he
gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the
people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up
twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of
those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and
children.
M: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

SERMON 2 Samuel 19:24-30
Ordinary People in Extraordinary Moments
Mephibosheth — A Guy who Got a Raw Deal
Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, also went down to meet the
king. He had not taken care of his feet or trimmed his mustache or
washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned
safely. When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king
asked him, “Why didn’t you go with me, Mephibosheth?”
He said, “My lord the king, since I your servant am lame, I said, ‘I
will have my donkey saddled and will ride on it, so I can go with the
king.’ But Ziba my servant betrayed me. And he has slandered your
servant to my lord the king. My lord the king is like an angel of God;
so do whatever pleases you. All my grandfather’s descendants
deserved nothing but death from my lord the king, but you gave your
servant a place among those who sat at your table. So what right do I
have to make any more appeals to the king?”
The king said to him, “Why say more? I order you and Ziba to
divide the fields.”
Mephibosheth said to the king, “Let him take everything, now that
my lord the king has arrived home safely.”

APOSTLES’ CREED
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father
almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER
C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy
kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine
is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.
Amen.
