Cystic Fibrosis—Nursing Care Before postural drainage, give bronchodilators

Cystic Fibrosis—Medications Pancreatic enzyme: STAT a.c.(powdered form mixed in cold applesauce)

Infancy, childhood—acute respiratory tract infection: most common illness

Respiratory Infections—Dietary ConcernsNo dairy products with respiratory infection (due to ↑

mucus)

Asthma–—Medication Cromolyn Na—prevents asthma attacks; does not treat

SIDS—Risk FactorsSignificant apnea → ↑ risk for SIDS

Medication Administration Use/Action Nursing Considerations

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS)

Cromolyn/Intal Nedocromil /Tilade

• Oral, nasal and inhaled (Cromolyn); inhaled (Nedocromil)

• Calculate to child’s weight in kilograms• Administer in provided dropper or calibrated syringe• NEVER use household

measuring spoon• Shake metered-dose inhaler (MDI) well before use

Used in asthma prophylactically and for prevention of exercise-induced asthma episode

Prevents activation and release of mediators of inflammation (e.g. histamine, leukotrienes, mast cells, eosinophils, monocytes)

• To prevent exercise-induced asthma episode: give 15 minutes before sustained activity

• Stress need to take regularly for proper effect

Pancreatic enzymes Pancrelipase/Pancrease;

Cotazym; Ultrase

• Oral; capsules that can be opened and the powder sprinkled on a small amount of food

• Dosage is based on number and consistency of stools and adequate weight gain

Used in cystic fibrosis as a pancreatic enzyme replacement

Aids in digestion and absorption of nutrients

• Enzymes must be consumed before or with every meal/snack

• Do not sprinkle powder on hot food as enzyme activity will be compromised
