What is censorship?• Censorship can be broadly defined as the

suppression of knowledge or ideas. They are used by Governments or organizations to prevent the circulation of material. In wartime information about troop activities, future battle plans etc., will be censored. In peacetime censorship can be more problematic and controversial

A brief history on Film Censor

• Film Censorship was set in motion in India when the Cinematograph Act 1918 was made.

• Censor Board were according to set up in Bombay, Calcutta , Madras , Rangoon and Lahore. All appointed by Government.

• They consist Commissioner of police, the Collector and tree prominent citizens representing the Hindu, Muslim and other community.

Film Censorship in India• Film censorship is carried out by various

countries to differing degrees, sometimes as a result of powerful or relentless lobbying by organizations or individuals. Films that are banned in a particular country change over time.

• “Film censorship becomes necessary because a film motivates thought and action and assures a high degree of attention and retention as compared to the printed word. The combination of act and speech, sight and sound in semi darkness of the theatre with elimination of all distracting ideas will have a strong impact on the minds of the viewers and can affect emotions...”
