Living costs are up for us all and the church pays more for everything it uses than ever before. The total program of our church including worship, study, fellowship, music, recreation and mission is wonderful. But it cannot be maintained without the support of all our members. EACH PERSON MUST ANSWER No person is forced to give to God’s work. Love for God is the only compelling force we need. Each person must live with himself/herself and accountability is to God alone. All that your church is doing is simply to help each one of us face up to our own Christian need to be generous and joyous givers. You Can Make a Difference

Next Sunday…

We Say, “Yes!” EVERY MEMBER PRESENT “Faith and Loyalty Sunday” is next Sunday, October 28, and every member of Ashland United Methodist Church is requested to be present for worship service. At that time, estimates of our giving for the year beginning January 1, 2019, will be made voluntarily in an atmosphere of worship and dedication.

IN CASE YOU ARE ABSENT In the event that you cannot be present, please bring or send your estimate of giving, sealed in an envelope, to the church office as soon as possible. CHRIST ABOVE CASH Our purpose as a church is not to raise money, but to build a kingdom of God. Money is a means by which we show our faith in God and our loyalty to Ashland Church.

Ashland United Methodist Church An Order for the Worship of God

Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost October 21, 2018 11:00 A.M. The Chiming of the Hour

(As the bell chimes the hour, this is a call for us to shift from conversation to silence, as we prepare our hearts and minds to worship God.)

Prelude “Walk Worthy” arr. Gina Sprunger

Mary Lynn Felsberg, Piano

The Lighting of Altar Candles Choral Call to Worship “Lord Jesus, Think on Me” Damon’s Psalmes, 1579

*The Hymn of Praise “I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord” UMH p. 540 *Invocation The Prayer of Confession (to be prayed by all)

Almighty and most merciful God, our heavenly Father: We confess that we have grievously sinned against thee in thought, in word and in deed. We have come short of thy glory; we have broken the unity of thy holy Church; and, every one of us has turned aside from the way of life. Yet do thou, O most merciful Father, hear us when we call upon thee with penitent hearts. Pardon our sins, and grant us thy peace. Confirm us in all goodness that we may serve thee with a quiet mind, and bring us to the life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Prayer for Pardon and The Lord’s Prayer The Anthem “Lord, Hear Our Thanks” G. F. Handel Ashland Youth Choir; Haley Calore, violin arr. by Hal H. Hopson Minister: O Lord, open thou our lips. People: And our mouths shall show forth thy praise. Minister: Praise ye the Lord. People: The Lord’s name be praised. *The Psalter “Psalm 100” UMH p. 821 (Join in singing the Response 1.)

*Affirmation of Faith “The Apostles’ Creed” UMH p. 881 *The Gloria Patri UMH p. 71 *The Gospel Lesson Mark 10: 35-45 The Call to Prayer Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Let us pray.

Welcome!

Please sign the friendship pad when it is passed to you and pass it to your neighbor.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Doxology Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Today’s Scripture Mark 10: 35-45

Pew Bible NT p. 47

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
