Salkehatchie Summer Service – Columbia Camp – July 20-27, 2019

Did you feel it? The excitement! The Love! The caring! That’s exactly what Salkehatchie is about. We could feel the excitement that Ashland church has for the Salkehatchie Campers! It’s what this church has done for the 15 years that Ashland has hosted the Columbia Salkehatchie Camp! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

The Columbia Camp is one of the oldest serving camps of Salkehatchie Summer Service. These statewide service camps enable our youth to serve those families throughout South Carolina who are less fortunate and whose houses are in need of repair. The goals are to make the houses safer, drier, and warmer in winter. This experience is more than repairing four houses. It’s an opportunity for the campers and families to bond together in spiritual building and the mending of their lives and homes. Our 54 campers represented 8 different churches throughout South Carolina. We are so appreciative of our adult campers who take a week of their vacation time to participate in this camp! Our campers are awesome!!! We send our thanks to:

The Friendship SS Class sponsored a Silent Auction and Dessert Bar in March, which provided over $5,000! This class also provided the hamburger and hot dog cookout on Sunday evening. The UMM provided and cooked our Saturday evening BBQ Rib dinner. The Faithwalkers SS Class removed furniture from all the rooms which were used as sleeping rooms for the campers. The Cornerstone SS Class coordinated the Wednesday evening Pot Luck Supper, which was wonderful and well attended! Mary Lightsey and Sandra Calore coordinated furniture donations and served as purchasing agents for MANY items; Colleen Daniels was our meals coordinator and at the last minute volunteered to cook our Monday evening dinner, when one of the churches could not supply our meal! Marilyn Gramling served as the camp photographer and coordinator of the “Giving Tree;” Judie Travis was the locker room monitor for showers at Irmo High School. Meals and food are such an important part of the camp. THANKS to our breakfast cooks: Cliff Jeffcoat, Hal and Sherrill Clarkson, and Ed Spratt, who arrived no later than 4:30 am to prepare the food. Over 30 Ashland members came to help with kitchen clean up in the early mornings and in the evenings. The following churches provided meals during the week: Francis Burns UMC, Grace UMC, Virginia Wingard UMC, Shady Grove UMC, St Marks, Heyward St. UMC, St. James UMC, and Ashland UMC. Many, many thanks to our Ashland children and their Sunday School teachers, who were displaced from their Sunday School rooms on Sunday morning. Thanks to the adult classes: Faithwalkers, and Marys & Marthas, who gave up their classrooms as well. Pastor Scott Efird provided spiritual guidance for the camp AND he was a registered camper/worker! Our own youth director, Ryan Keith, coordinated the team building activities on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon for the campers AND he was a registered camper/worker as well! Jack Holladay, Andra Keith, and several campers provided the music for evening worship.

Around Ashland

Thanks to everyone who generously donated for the sweet treat bags for the faculty and staff of Leaphart Elementary School. 93 bags were delivered to Chad Raynor, assistant principal, who distributed them to the staff in May. ~Sally Lowery Ashland continues to save Box Tops for Education, Campbell’s Soup labels and aluminum can tabs. Place these items in the containers beyond the library on the bookcase shelves. Prayer shawls will be dedicated soon. The shawls may be left in room 138. ESL classes will resume the first week in September. The fall session of Shepherd’s Center of St Andrews begins September 17th. More information will be available soon.

Children’s Ministry

It Takes a village to BLESS a child and it

takes a child(ren) to BLESS a village(s).

Each year our children are displaced from their

classrooms to make room for our Salkehatchie

campers. It is a great time for us to meet together.

This year was no exception. The children made

thank you treats for the campers. The treats are

then placed on the campers pillows for when they

return at the end of the day.

Thank you to our teachers that give their time each

week to help our children understand God’s love for

them and how to show His love to others.

Name Tags

As is our custom, Ashland is helping with back-to-school supplies for the students at Seven Oaks Elementary. This school is designated as a Title 1 school, meaning that a large percentage of the students attending are from low-income families. We will be contacting individual Sunday School classes with specific requests. Additionally, we are asking every individual, both adult and children to contribute one box of Kleenex or other tissue. If you do not attend one of our Sunday school classes but would still like to be a part of this back-to-school drive, you may place purchased items in the Mary and Martha's Sunday school room (across from the library). Items needed include glue sticks, 24 ct. Crayola crayons, 12 ct. colored pencils, highlighters in various colors, and black dry erase markers. Thank you for your support. Sharing God’s Love current needs: men's white socks, children's clothes-sizes 18 - 20, tea bags, jelly, canned or boxed potatoes, canned tuna, salmon, chicken, baked beans, chili, canned fruit, mac and cheese, baby wipes, baby diapers - sizes 4-6 (Columbia Salkehatchie Camp – continued from page 1)
