MEMBER NEWS LION FISH WORKSHOP

Jewelry Creations

In conjunction with a Marine Discovery Center workshop about the invasive Lion Fish, AWI artists Gail Waters, Katty Smith, Kathy O’Meara and Margaret Anglin gathered this past summer to harvest Lion Fish fins and spinesfor jewelry.

A fewweeks later, after the finsand spines had dried out and aired out, the artists met at AWI to crimp, glue, dye, and string the fins and spines into jewelry. Thefemale staff members at MDC were each given a choice of a piece of jewelry to wear around MDC to stimulate discussion about the Lion Fish which are voraciously eating manyofournativespeciesoffish. It was great fun. Granada Grand Festival of the ArtsOrmond Beach, September 19, 2015 10 A.M. - 5 P.M.

Organizers are interested in Local Artists to dispay their artwork for this free admission event in downtown Ormond Beach. Even though the original cutoff date for booth space was August 15, they still have some spots available so artists are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. ($35.00 for a 10 X 10 ft. booth space.)

UPCOMING EVENTS

MDC/AWI Open HouseOctober 10, 2015

The Artists’ Workshop in conjunction with the Marine Discovery Center will be holding an Open House on Oct. 10 from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. For our part of this awareness raising event, we are planning to have a “Meet the Artist” activity. We would like to have several of our artists working at their easels throughout our studios and outside so that visitors can see the wonderful things that go on at The Artists’ Workshop. You can have work for sale as well. Please consider joining the fun!

Halifax Art FestivalNovember 7-8, 2015

The Artists’ Workshop is going tohaveitsfirsteverentryintheannual Halifax Art Festival which is held on Beach Street in Daytona. This year the show will be held on Nov. 7 and 8. We will have a tent to display paintings for sale as well as an information table to promote our organization and encourage people to become a member. If you would like to have the opportunity to show your work and possibly sell a painting, we are asking that participants contribute $15.00 to cover the cost of the entry fee. If you want to participate, let Liz Clayton know as soon as possible since space will be limited and three people are already on her list!

The new 2015-2016 AWI Membership Directory (bright green cover) was mailed out to all members earlier this month. There is one correction I would like to make to the calendar in the Directory. The Holiday Luncheon is set for December 15th. The Directory says it is a Wednesday. Oops! It is a Tuesday, (same time and place).

Quite a few Directories have been returned, mostly for people on vacation in the New Smyrna Beach area. The post office would not hold them with your mail. You can pick them up at the first meeting. They will be by the sign in table.

From the PresidentLiz Clayton

Dear Members,

This is going to be a very exciting year for The Artists’ Workshop. I am honored to serve as your president and am so pleased to have such a hard working, forward thinking board to work with! As I attended many activities and meetings over the summer I was impressed with the hours of hard work that go into making our organization one of the best arts organizations in Florida! My goal as your president is to raise the level of awareness of The Artists’ Workshop in our community, improve attendance at our gallery on Canal Street, increase our memberships, and offer more opportunities for developing the love of art in our youth and adults through art classes, workshops, lectures, and other activities at our studios and in the community.

Many people have already volunteered to make this happen, and I hope I can inspire many others to jump on board as well. Be watching for ways that you can help us make The Artists’ Workshop a name that everyone knows!!

Artists’ Workshop programs are sponsored in part by a grant from the Cultural Council of Volusia County.

From the Editor:

Hope you had a wonderful summer! The Artists’ Workshop has a great lineup of activities for the 2015-16 season. Please plan to join us for meetings, classes, workshops, and other events this year!

The cutoff date for inputs for the next (September) newsletter will be Wednesday, September 9th.

Current and past newsletters are always posted on our website:www.artistsworkshopinc.com/newsletters.html
