Librarian’s CornerCindy SloanThe first meeting of

the book club was wonderful. We have room for more to join us if you would like to be a part of this lively, fun group. Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 8, from 4 - 6 P.M. We will continue our discussion on Caravaggio and the Baroque. Bring some food to share and your good spirits.

I am putting a box out on the desk for donations to the library to purchase needed books and library materials. I will have books out for sale on the library desk and also at our monthly meetings.

I am also starting a shelf for the book club which will be ‘closed reserve’. It will contain the books we are reading in the book club and supplementary materials. These books cannot be checked out but can be used in the library. The remainder of the year will include a film on Chagall and his autobiography, My Life. We will then move to Vienna and Klimt. It will be a historical fiction novel out this past year called The Painted Kiss. We will learn about the Sessionist movement in Austria. This was a remarkable time in Vienna and we will be listening to music of the time and tackle some poetry. Our last book will feature Florence and the book called “Brunelleschi’s Dome”. This non-fiction book relates how the structure, considered a miracle of architecture, was conceived and built. How about a trip to Florence to see it?????

The library check out and return procedures will remain the same as they have always been. Please check the books out and don’t just ‘borrow’ them. If you still have any out, please turn them in.Questions? - Contact me at [email protected].

Join us Oct 8thArt Book Club Continues:

“The Lost Painting”

We will continue our discussion on Caravaggio and the Baroque - including Jonathan Harr’s “fascinating details of Caravaggio’s strange, turbulent career and the astonishing beauty of his work”.

UpcomingArt Book Club Selections:

Your Art In Public PlacesJane Owen

Call for artists: We need work in 2 weeks! Let me know how many pieces you can

have ready and something about size, medium, and style. That way we can decide how to make the best installations. In solo and shared shows, experienced artists can participate in the best placement of their work within their space, subject to occasional constraints of the venue. I look forward to sharing your art with you and others.

The Artists’ Workshop serves members, other artists in the community, and the community by installing art in public places. Exhibits generally last for two months periods starting at the beginning of October, December, February, etc. Current venues include the New Smyrna, Edgewater, and Oak Hill libraries, the Oak Hill and New Smyrna City Halls, the Community Center of the United Church of Christ, and Bert Fish Hospital. Please contact Jane Owen (386-428-1225 or 386-478-3409, or [email protected]) or Ruby Jones (386-427-9222 or [email protected]) as soon as possible.

Art in Public PlacesWhen you’re in love with hue and form and selfAnd stroke the world through chaste canvas’ protection,T’would be a shame to leave the passion on the shelf. So once before you die, drop art’s discrimination,Expose the soul, its shabby shell, its timid paces,Show its many faces splendid in public places.

From the PresidentJoe AnglinWe had a very good turnout for our first Artists’

Workshop, Inc. Members Meeting for the 2013-14 season. Wonderful presentations were made by our teachers. Many new classes and workshops are being offered this year. I hope that you will review the various descriptions and join a class and/or a workshop this Fall. The teachers are all fantastic!

The AWI Board is in the process of developing an incentive volunteer program for the Studios to assure we will have a receptionist/ambassador present Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. until 4:30 P.M. We have many visitors who drop in and/or call inquiring about our activities. More are anticipated as a result of our enhanced on-going marketing efforts and wonderful programs. When the plan is completed and presented, hopefully in October, I hope you will give serious consideration to helping by volunteering.

Have a great month!
