Welcome to Artexpo New York 2015! For the 37th year in a row, we’re excited to bring you the best art the world has to offer, all under one roof at the renowned Pier 94. We’re thrilled you could join us!
You know, when I think about what sets Artexpo apart from other art shows, it all comes down to the personal connections made at the show. Sure, you can see great art a lot of places—but where else can you meet the artists as you’re viewing their work? Picking their brains about what inspired them to create certain pieces, exploring what motivates them, learning about the mediums they use and why… it’s remarkable, getting to connect in that way, and it’s what makes attending Artexpo such a rich experience. After creating a personal rapport with the artists you meet, each piece of art you take home becomes a special souvenir colored by the encounter, not just another piece of art on your wall.
And, as always, we’ve got plenty of engaging events to fill out the weekend. Our Opening Night Preview Party will feature free vodka cocktails courtesy of Emory Vodka and a wine tasting with ArtForo Magazine, as well as the anticipated unveiling of our 2015 Poster Challenge winner. Grab a drink and roam the aisles of Pier 94 to find the next jewel for your collection! And if you’re looking to get educated, don’t miss our Topics & Trends seminars. Learn tips and tricks from industry pros as you rest your feet after strolling through booth after booth of world-class art.
Most importantly, enjoy yourself! Sure, there are business cards to exchange, deals to be made, and classes to attend, but the heart of Artexpo is in the person-to-person connections forged, the lifelong relationships made, and the in-your-face reminders of why we do what we do. We do it for that unifying force that calls to us all—the love of art.
Sincerely,
Eric Smith President, Redwood Media Group

April 23, 2015 Dear Friends: It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone to Artexpo New York at Pier 94.
New York has always been a place where creativity has thrived, and the many artists who call the five boroughs home are a vital part of our city’s cultural and economic life. We are proud of our reputation as a capital of the arts, and there’s no better place than our city to host Artexpo New York, the world’s largest fine arts trade show and marketplace. Since 1978, Artexpo New York has brought together talented artists, gallery owners, collectors, and art enthusiasts for educational seminars, entertainment, and opportunities to discover the latest trends and movements that are defining the arts industry. Along with [SOLO] for emerging artists and DECOR Expo Showcase, this exhibition will provide a memorable fine arts experience that offers something for everyone, and I applaud its dedicated organizers, supporters, and exhibitors for bringing this event to our city and contributing to New York’s thriving arts scene.
On behalf of the City of New York, please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable and inspiring exhibition. Sincerely, Bill de Blasio Mayor

YOU’RE THE DESIGNER! MAKING GOOD FRAMING CHOICES 1:00–2:00What makes for good framing design?
Generally speaking, a beautifully framed
piece is part of the decor of a room;
therefore, it needs to be designed with the
intent of making it an integral part of the
room. Creating a well-designed custom
frame entails combining components and
products to create a design that suits the
client’s decor, rather than just assembling
parts. In this seminar, you will learn about
custom frame composition, design
elements, and more in order to maximize
sales and please your clients.
Who should attend: Frame shop and
gallery owners, art dealers, artists
Speaker: Michael Pacitti
EVENTS! EVENTS! EVENTS! BRINGING NEW ART BUYERS TO YOUR GALLERY OR STUDIO | 2:30–3:30In a time when galleries are running

event ideas she has used to energize and
renew her award-winning gallery. These
inspiring and unique gallery experiences
can ultimately help you increase your
customer base and revenue.

SIX SPHERES OF SUCCESS: PART 112:30–1:30The Six Spheres of Success (a.k.a. “The
Happy Atom”) is a fact-proven concept
in attracting art buyers. Michael Joseph’s
instructive “Art as a Business” plan will
walk you through each of the elements
that make up a successful art career. The
concept of how this all works together
is borrowed from the basic scientific
structure of the atom and from our solar
system. In this case, at the center of the
art universe is what all artists are after: art
buyers. Revolving around this is everything
we need to do and create to make it all
happen. Part 1 gets you started; Part 2
(on Saturday from 12:30–1:30) puts it all
together as “The Happy Atom.”
Who should attend: Artists and anyone
interested in making art their career
Speaker: Michael Joseph
[SYNERGY] ART PROJECT 12:30–3:30Watch as the students from Morris Hills
High School, coached by several talented
Artexpo artists, create their [SYNERGY] Art
Project masterpiece. Morris Hills stresses
the importance of art as a critical subject
for students throughout their high school
years, because engagement in an arts
classroom—aside from providing creative
enrichment—teaches students how to be
good workers and responsible people.
For the [SYNERGY] Project, a group of 40
multimedia art students have devised
their artwork theme and will make it come
alive at Artexpo.
Who should attend: Artexpo Attendees
Location: SOLO, adjacent to Education

GO BIG! STRATEGIES TO SELL ART AND FRAMING SERVICES | 2:00–3:00Have you ever wondered what it takes to
get banks, hospitals, corporations, and the
designers who work on these projects to
buy art from you? Litsa Spanos, President
of Art Design Consultants (ADC), will share
proven methods that have helped her land
numerous small- to large-scale accounts
throughout her 20 years in the business.
You’ll leave her seminar with great ideas
that you can implement immediately.
Who should attend: Gallery owners,
art dealers, artists
Speaker: Litsa Spanos

Alexis Silk, Female Angel James Wilbat, Three Heads Are Better Than One!
A Glass Act: Five Glorious Glass Artists represented by Mattson’s Fine Art
Artist Highlight
Alexis Silk A Passion for FireCalling the process of working with hot glass “a dance, intensely hot, urgent, complex, subtle, and immediate,” Alexis Silk could also very well be describing the results of her process—her glass figures evoke a host of strong and perhaps conflicting feelings as they offer commentary on not just the human form, but also human nature in general, including gender roles and society’s objectification of the female body. Whether intense or whimsical, each piece is masterfully crafted entirely free-hand by Silk and illustrates that there’s more to us as people than what meets the eye. Lurking under the surface of each of Silk’s sculptures—and each
of us—is a richly complex layering of colors, waiting to be discovered. Silk, who graduated with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, has her work in museums, galleries, private collections, and fine art shows around the world.
James Wilbat Playfully Abstract Equally passionate about Abstract Expressionist painting and ancient glassblowing techniques, James Wilbat from a very young age began to delve into his own landscape of creativity. An early interest in drawing and watercolor led to an undergraduate focus on ceramics—the medium in which he received his BFA—but it wasn’t until Wilbat’s
senior year of college that he discovered glassblowing, the art that would springboard his career. Since earning his MFA in Design in 1980 at the University of Kansas, Wilbat has continued to master this intricate craft with not just technical prowess, but also with a penchant for bright colors, whimsy, and playful design, elements which he seamlessly fuses together in order to create one-of-a-kind abstract pieces. The award-winning Wilbat sells his glasswork at juried festivals year-round and showcases his work across the nation in various art galleries and museums.
Lisabeth Sterling Lucid Dreams on Glass Renowned glass artist Lisabeth Sterling studied drawing and

painting in the late 1970s at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Since beginning her glassmaking studies in 1985, Sterling has created wonderfully complex narrative worlds in her glass vessels, earning her the reputation as one of America’s finest glass engravers. Crafting vessels in rich blues, moss greens, burnt oranges, and other evocative hues, Sterling brings each piece to life by engraving intricate cameos in each piece with diamond-tipped engraving tools. Describing the images in her engravings “much like lucid dreams on glass,” Sterling in essence tells a story with the faces and figures that grace her works. The winner of numerous awards, Sterling has exhibited all across the United States and Europe, and has her work in several museums and collections.
Peter Layton Embracing Fluidity One of the world’s most widely respected glass artists, Peter Layton has inspired and
influenced countless present-day glassmakers with his creation-before-commercialism attitude, his exquisite use of color and organic texture, and the sculptural quality of his work. “Glass is such an underrated medium,” remarks Layton, with “a fluidity and uncertainty which I choose to embrace rather than overcome.” Still quite active in his mid-70s, Layton looks forward to continuing to explore and create, explaining that “there are always new ideas, techniques, and other challenges to master.” Inspired by whatever is around him, whether it be concrete patterns in nature or abstract concepts facing society, Layton shapes his observations into gorgeous glass pieces, which have graced the collections of such luminaries as Elton John and the Duchess of Kent and can be found in museums, galleries, and exhibitions across Europe and America.
Donald Carlson The Challenges of RedIt was in 1967 that Donald Carlson found himself at a fork in the road:
either pursue a career in marketing or explore the ancient art of glassblowing. He chose the latter path—a decision for which we can all be thankful. Carlson’s glass expertise is best reflected in his skill at creating perfect proportions without using molds and in his aptitude for working with the color red, which is the one color that is not easily made. Achieving a consistent shade of red not only requires adding the appropriate amount of chemicals, as when creating any other color, but also numerous other hard-to-measure variables. This technical challenge has proven an enjoyable one to Carlson, who uses the color in nearly all his glasswork. His work has been in over 300 exhibitions over the past six decades and is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and numerous other prestigious museums and collections around the world.

2015 Poster Challenge Winner Joëlle Blouin
Besides attending the unveiling of Joëlle’s
winning artwork at 5:00 p.m. in Lounge
94 on Thursday, April 23rd, make sure to
check out some of her other pieces at The
Signature Gallery Booth, #D.
ABOUT JOËLLE
Born in Quebec City, Canada, Joëlle
Blouin was always drawn to art and
aesthetic beauty as a child. Though she
never received formal art training, and in
fact earned her college degree in interior
design, she followed her true calling to
pursue art in 2008—and her success
was instant. Following her first (sold-out!)
private exhibition, she began exhibiting
her work in galleries in Montreal and
Toronto before falling in love with
Laguna Beach during a trip to Southern
California. Her first U.S. show was there,
and it prompted interest from galleries
across the country.
To fulfill those galleries’ requests and
meet with collectors, Joëlle decided to
literally get the show on the road, hitting
the highway with her husband in their
35-foot motorhome. Traveling for the last
three years, Joëlle has gotten to immerse
herself in various cultures for months at a
time, which serves as inspiration for her
artwork. “Every country, state, province,
city, town, village, and neighborhood
has its own identity, and this is primarily
what I try to capture,” Joëlle explains.
“Taking a moment to analyze the style of
architecture, the way the light reflects on
the different materials, the textures, the
surroundings, and how people interact
has always intrigued me.”
Her signature painting style, known as
Urban Cubism, involves blending and
mixing oil paints directly on the canvas
LAST YEAR AT ARTEXPO NEW YORK, we held our first Poster Challenge as a
way to highlight new artistic talent. The contest, which let artists submit their
artwork to be considered for the official show poster, was such a success
that we decided to give it another go this year! Out of over 300 entries from
around the world, our jury selected 10 finalists (see their entries on p. 48)
before handing the judging over to Facebook voters. The grand prize
winner for 2015 was French-Canadian artist Joëlle Blouin, for her painting

using only a palette knife. The cubic
texturing that results is rich and captivating.
“At times chaotic, serene, or mysterious,
each of my works should be viewed
differently,” says Joëlle. “The moment my
painting catches your eye, a new journey
has begun and beauty shall prevail.”
In August 2014, Joëlle was granted a
rare O-1 visa by the U.S. government for
her extraordinary ability in the arts, which
allows her to live and work in the States
on a more permanent basis. Since then,
she’s set up a new studio in Southern
California—but she continues to return to
her Quebec City studio, where everything
began just eight years ago.
Her Poster Challenge entry garnered
the approval of thousands of fans. “When
I was painting Without Hesitation, I knew
something special was happening,”
says Joëlle. “The strokes of my palette
knife were spontaneous and the colors
flowed onto the canvas with ease. The
title describes very well the state I was in
when I was creating this piece.” As for
how the painting embodied the contest’s
theme, “Passageways,” Joëlle feels it
was a perfect fit. “I have always been
inspired by urban environments,” she
explains, “and I wanted to create a piece
that left room for the imagination, where
abstraction and imperfections are present
to show that aesthetic beauty can emerge
from a simple environment. The theme
was perfect for me to demonstrate my
vision of an urban passageway.”
“The moment my painting catches your eye, a new journey has begun and
beauty shall prevail.”

Leon Oks, Party Girls
The Evocative Art of Leon OksBooth #S501
Leon Oks, Dream
Inspired by his bittersweet Ukrainian childhood days, the strength and beauty of the feminine form, and the sweeping simplicity of nature, Leon Oks’s paintings take his viewers on a journey of the human spirit. “It is important that my audience in a very simple way draw satisfaction and pure pleasure when looking at and living with my work,” Oks explains. “This is the power of art: to overcome the problems and realities of everyday life and offer a hopeful view.”
Born in Ukraine, Oks was raised by his mother and grandmother, moving constantly after WWII took the life of his father when Oks was just two years old. Beyond the hardship of his life as a youth, however, Oks discovered the joy of creating art. “I spent each evening in our tiny kitchen, looking at the reproductions in the few art books my family owned,” Oks relates. “I was also drawn to create studies from nature and spent many days walking through the nearby woods, parks, and streets observing the awesome beauty and grandeur that
surrounded my town.” He was captivated not only by the beauty of his natural surroundings, but also by that of the female body, which is evident in his lush, lyrical, female-centric work.
Filled with sensual shapes, warm tones, fluid brush strokes, and evocative images, Oks’s oil paintings reflect his leap into a freer way of expressing himself in 1980 when he immigrated to the United States. The conservative professors of his early days looked down on Oks’s unique style, but his work flourished when he moved to the U.S. And now, as a teacher in Illinois, Oks passes along the importance of that creative freedom to his students. “As an art instructor, I tell my students to develop their own individuality. Admire the masters, but you must have your own style,” he says.
Oks has won numerous awards for his artwork, which can be found in private collections, corporations, and museums across the U.S. and Europe. Look for him at Artexpo New York in the [SOLO] section, Booth S501.

With just one look at Carmen Stiffelman’s work, you know that she is intimately familiar with the strength and grace of the human body. Crafting lifelike yet otherworldly figures with bronze, Stiffelman offers a testament to the human spirit with each sculpture.
Born in Romania, a country that was once lush and green but had become stark and repressive in the years around her birth, Stiffelman moved with her family to Israel when she was just three years old. As a child, she loved running around barefoot
and reveling in her desert surroundings—
soaking up the sun, feeling the sand in her toes, listening to the music of her new country—and she channeled that
creative energy into making things. Painting, designing jewelry, and creating floral arrangements offered Stiffelman an artistic outlet as a young woman.
After moving to California in her twenties, getting married, and having kids, Stiffelman found her artistic side reawakened after working with a physical therapist. The process’s anatomical aspect—the manipulation of muscle and bone, the inner workings of the body’s structural systems—appealed to Stiffelman, and her curiosity spurred
a return to the studio. Her use of bronze, a regal, timeless medium, gives a nod to ancient Greek sculpture yet has a decidedly contemporary feel in the way she manipulates it.
Expressing her inner intelligence the way she knows how, kinesthetically, Stiffelman has created a dynamic collection over the past several years, featuring sleek, strong figures in motion; evocative busts; and sweeping waves. To view Stiffelman’s work is, simply, to be moved by the power of the human form.

Renee Brown is a widely respected artist and educator. Trained at State
University College at Buffalo, Rochester Institute of Technology, and studies in Sienna, Italy, she has been widely ex-hibited near her home in Buffalo, NY and elsewhere, including the Castle Estense in Ferrara Italy. As noted by prominent curator, Nancy Weekly, “She i s, in particular, a person who was given a second chance. Years ago Renee and her husband Dwight survived a near-fatal automobile accident. Her recent paintings reflect the journey she has taken through a fog of recovery, tapping her unconscious and interpreting her dreams so that she might communicate with others.”
Front Cover: Awkward, 2012
Back Cover: Wrong Direction, 2012
Renee Brown's paintings, derived from dreams and from waking visions, demonstrate
extraordinary diversity, highly-skilled execution, and breath-taking depth of feeling.
In hIs perceptIve IntroductIon, Anthony Bannon, executive director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center, notes that “Brown's are complex designs. She never leaves a painting too early, knowing that the earth tones, or lavender or rose tints, are not made by singular paint alone, but through multiple applications. She establishes her signature within adjacent hues, revealing the depth within a seemingly modest range. And that is consistent with her meaning, lifting out of earthly matters to locate an aspect of the divine.”
b
“...Throughout her work, Brown leads the viewer to the Divine Dance, waking up to the music of Wisdom and a mystical presence. It is a river, a Holy River, that runs through her art, whichever accent of series or sequence she may place upon it– the personal dream or the apocalyptical promise – throughout is the character of holiness, an awe-filledcomplexity relieved at center with her powerful belief in the unifying certainty of God’s presence.”
b
This book contains art and experience like no other.
