utting together a private artcollection is essentially alabor of the heart and the

soul. It invites the dedicatedconnoisseur to experiencedeep passion and inspired

    commitment.This observation is vividly evident

in an attraction titled An AmericanOdyssey: The Warner Collection ofAmerican Art. It is currentlyinstalled in Philadelphia inside theArthur Ross Gallery at 220 S. 34thSt. on the campus of the University ofPennsylvania and will remain there

until Nov. 6, 2011.The exhibition offers artworks dat-ing from several centuries ofAmerican creative effort. They com-prise a traveling show drawn from theprivate collection of Jonathan Warnerand his wife, Susan Austin Warner. Inpictures with considerable popularappeal, the show reflects their view ofAmerican history in readily accessi-ble, essentially narrative paintings, done between 1829 and 1969.

Warner began buying art in the1950s, when he acquired a series oforiginal prints by John JamesAudubon. Over the next 40 years, heand his wife added to the collection. In 2003 he founded the Westervelt-Warner Museum to share his and hiscompanys collection (originally GulfStates Paper) with the public.

The selections on display in theRoss Gallery cover portraits, signifi-cant events taken from the past and

the Bible as well as illustrations ofeveryday activity, still-life and land-scape. Among the many well-knownpainters who are represented byexamples of their work, you findAlbert Bierstadt, Mary Cassatt,Frederic Church, Thomas Cole,Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth.

The Warners believe the study ofsuch selections offers an exceptionalopportunity for learning about thenations growth and the foundation of

its ideals. The value of home and family life

has been painted with colorful atten-tion in Edward Henrys oil on canvastitled Colonial Wedding. Alivelygenre subject, the picture gives voiceto a slice-of-life occasion as it mighthave taken place in one of the British

colonies on the Eastern seaboardbefore the patriots came together toproclaim independence from themother country. Alive with ruralcharm and an abundance of crispdetail, the composition is effervescentwith the joy of the moment, ostensi-bly destined to never fade.

The sincere devotion of manyAmericans to the Judeo-Christianreligious tradition is expressed artisti-cally in the Frederic Edwin Churchpainting titled Moses Viewing thePromised Land. A rather small-scalepicture, it projects a mighty panorama

in which the Biblical leader of hisflock stands on a high cliff lookingout across the River Jordan to seeIsrael off in the distance. It is quitespectacular. As a view of nature, outof doors, the overall character of theimage is absolutely overpowering and

heroically dramatic. One of several versions of

Archibald Willards well-knownSpirit of 76 is in the show. Itvibrates with ultra-national chauvin-ism and the vigorous beat of march-ing musicians performing with fife

    and drums.Admittedly,the design isa bit con-trived but,nevertheless,it also com-municates asoul-stirring

fervor, welllaced withcivic appre-ciation.Incidentally,besides hiscareer as apainter, Willard was a veter-an of the Union Army whopersonally participated, as acolors-bearer, in the CivilWar.

The Arrangement ofGrapes is a fetching still-life by James Peale in thetradition of 17th centuryDutch painting. It voices asincere tribute to the bountyof Mother Nature.Apparently, she has brought

the fruit of theearth into exis-tence for thenourishment anddelight of all thecreatures on theface of the earth.

    The overallinstallation is

valuable for itsservice as a cata-log of the manyways artistsacross the yearshave devisedassorted styles

for representing the overtappearance of people, places and things. Theymay not always reach theheights of aesthetic accom-

plishment one finds, forexample, on a visit to theUffizi Gallery in Florence. But within the scope of theirown reasonable limits, theyadd up to a fascinating exhi-bition with a character and apersonality all its own.

Though the billboard billdescribed in last months Art

Matters was signed by MayorNutter after it was approved byCity Council, an amendmentintroduced by Councilman FrankDiCicco was added to the bill toprotect structures recognized bythe Philadelphia HistoricCommission. All this took placetoo late for last months issue ofArt Matters.

Ben Leach, advocacy advocatefor the Philadelphia Preservation

Alliance, said the amendment wasfirst proposed by his organizationto modify the billboard bill. It was

approved after council held up thesigning of the bill to vote for the

amendment. What the amendment states isthat any billboard proposed for aproperty that has Philadelphia his-toric recognition would have togo before the PhiladelphiaHistoric Commission forapproval.

Among the many stipulationsin the main part of the bill arerequirements that developers mustspend at least $10 million on any

building before it could apply toplace a billboard on it.

Follow-up on the billboardsdestined for East Marketfootwear and other objects Hadid has designed,

as well as the prototype the Z-Car.Her designs will show how she uses poly-

styrene and vinyl in structures based on curvilin-ear geometrics.

Kathryn Bloom Hiesinger, curator ofEuropean decorative arts, said of Hadid, She isinterested in the interface between architecture, landscape and geology and explores the intersec-tion of these elements with a spatial compositionthat ebbs and flows in wave-like movements, manipulating the viewers understanding ofspace and constantly shifting perspectives.

Hadid will help arrange the gallery as part ofthe exhibit to show her designs for curvingsofas, tables and chairs made of materialsincluding steel, aluminum and polyurethane. Theexhibit will also include jewelry. Shoes amdtableware will demonstrate the theories of theconnected nature of design, which Hadidespouses.

Included will be a Mesa Table supported by

branching, lofted connectors while a table madeof polished aluminum appears to hover close tothe floor supported by a myserius balance. Avideo wall will help transform the gallery into aconnected, fluid space.

Micro architecture works will include a cof-fee and tea set that change the concept of con-

tainers for coffeee, tea, milk and sugar. Crystalnecklaces and strappy shoes will add sparkle tothe exhibit. The three-wheeled Z-Car, an aerody-namic prototype displaying several of Hadidssculptural forms, will be on display in the atriumof the Perelman building.

Zaha Hadid will be honored Nov. 18 with adesign excellence award given by Collab, a vol-unteer committee of design professionals sup-porting the modern and contemporary designcollection at the museum.

This is a monthly column about architecture, city planning and urban design. Comments andquestions would be welcome. Diane Fiske canbe contacted at [email protected].
