WASHING MACHINE

In this project I had to calculate things like the drum diameter and volume, the power of the motor in combination with the speed during certrifuging and washing. Besides these mechanical issues, I also made an interface and of course the design of the machine. This, in combination with (VR-)renderings makes this product a good looking end-result. Check my site www.arnoldhubach.nl to view the VR render.

Design a washing machine, based on a target audience. In this case, this washing machine is designed for singles between the 25 and 40 years old.

In this product there are a lot of technical issues which have to be known before I could start desinging. Besides all the calculation about the washing volume and the speed of the drum, I also had to calculate the ratio of the acceleration by the v-string.

In this product I had to detail and engineer one component of the machine. I have developed the door with its hinge and lock. Of course this is rendered to deliver a good looking product. Check also the product poster which can be seen on my website www.arnoldhubach.nl.

I made my own interface, based on the main actions which are done each time the enduser will start a wash. I made an interactive face which also could be tested by clicking on the buttons in an interactive software.

SHIFTING SOLAR

After we have done a lot of research in different potential markets (in combanation with aluminum profiles), we decided to make a solar panel system for people who live in an apartment. These people don’t have a roof to place the regular panels. We developed a system which could be attached on the balcony. Our system makes it also possible to increase the Wp by rotating the panels perpendicular to the sun.

We had to design a product for a company which develops products with aluminum profiles. The assignment was to make something innovative for entering a new market. This product is being added to the productportfolio of the company.

Page 7: ARNOLD HUBACH PORTFOLIOarnoldhubach.nl/assets/portfolio-arnold-hubach.pdf · the fourth year of Industrial Product Design. In this portfolio I will show you some products which I

Before we could design a new product for the assortiment, we had to do a lot of research about possible products with an innovative twist. After ths phase, we have developed several concepts. After we made a decision, we had to know the working of solar systems very well to design something new.

During the design process, we had been looking at the end-user and the attaching of this heavy product at a balcony without the help of proffessionals. Next to that, we also made an app which instantly shows the information about the yield, the position and the averages of the solar system.

We made this product ourselves to show the exact working of this product. We could get the aluminum profiles from our client and build this product completely ourselves on a 1:1 scale. We have tested how we could attach all the wires and connect them to a casing which controls the shifting.

VERTIC WALL

Check out the designbooklet and a video about this project on my website www.arnoldhubach.nl!

In the Minor Allround Design (MAD) I developed a vertical wall for CloudGarden. This wall is supplied by the water of an AC unit. This water drops out of the unit when the air is cooling down.

Page 9: ARNOLD HUBACH PORTFOLIOarnoldhubach.nl/assets/portfolio-arnold-hubach.pdf · the fourth year of Industrial Product Design. In this portfolio I will show you some products which I

The block (shown on the picture) has a special innovative function. Besides the regular application of growing plants, the water which drips out of the AC units will be collected and filtered within these blocks. With the capillary force, the plants will be fed from the water in the filtering part.

Combine these blocks and boxes n a pattern around the windows and AC units to cover the wall. The boxes will collect dripping water from the AC units and rainwater. It also prevents againt ingrowing plants and it hides the ugly view from down the street.

When all these componets are placed on the wall, the nature will do its thing. This green wall is self-sufficient and it only has to be pruned. And by the way, it delivers fresh dringing water to the residents.

And after a few months, an ugly building is changed into a living place for flora and fauna. Besides that, vergetables can be grown in the box around the window and the ugly AC units are hidden for the passerbys.

PORTABLE SPEAKERThe assignment was to design a portable speaker which is developed for a target audience between the 18 and 25 years.

In this project I have learned about the working of a speaker and how to get the best out of the transducer. After a concept phase, I have design a product which is based on the ergonomics of the hands of the target audience. Of course I have printed a model to test it and to show it on the Be Proud and Show It Exhibition in our school.

Page 11: ARNOLD HUBACH PORTFOLIOarnoldhubach.nl/assets/portfolio-arnold-hubach.pdf · the fourth year of Industrial Product Design. In this portfolio I will show you some products which I

This project started with research about the different components which had to be collected and determined. Thinking about the best hardware combined with the best design resulted in this portable speaker.

During the design process I made a visual 3D printed MDF model. This made it easier to think about adaptions or possible problems which could be faced. Besides that, a modelmakes it easier to get a visual image about the product. This was my first 3D printed model.

In this project I have also been looking at the experiencing of the user of the speaker. By creating a 360 angle, the sound can get everywhere and create the ultimate experience. Besides that, the dimensions are chosen specifically so the speaker feels like it is ment to take with you.

PLASTIC RECYCLINGThe assignment was to design a product which would make the students of the NHL Stenden University more aware of the (amount of) plastic waste which is thrown away. Besides that, it should create a circular awareness: plastic can be recycled.

Check out www.arnoldhubach.nl/flessismore.html to see some more visuals of this project.

The product which I designed is a bench made out of several modular pieces. Each piece is made of recycled PET bottles. The more plastic is collected by the students, the longer the bench will become. After some time, the bench is making impact by its growing size. At the same time it will make the students think about their behaviour (as in: the’re throwing away too much). This product also shows how plastic can be recycled and re-used,

Page 13: ARNOLD HUBACH PORTFOLIOarnoldhubach.nl/assets/portfolio-arnold-hubach.pdf · the fourth year of Industrial Product Design. In this portfolio I will show you some products which I

The project had five important aspects: plastic, people, planet, profit and product. With what kind of product could I create a circular awareness? What is the current status of that awareness amongst the target audience? What kind of plastic could be used for this product? And so on.

During the engineering I had to design a shape which costs as little plastic as possible, while the bench would still be strong enough to bear in the conditions with students sitting on it. To achieve this, I did several tests with different configurations of the side-view of the bench.

The product is 3D printed (on scale) to test the strenght and stifness. The design on the picture on the left is the strongest option. It has ribs and uprights to make the seat strong in both horizontal and vertical direction (with the shear and buckle movements).

CAMBODIADuring my study I have been in Cambodia for four months. I went there as a pioneer to start projects, both for my own study, but as well for other studies. This adventure was done for the minor International Sustainable Development. It was the first time they sent students to that country, so it was up to me to kick it off with starting some project (from skratch)

When I left the Netherlands I knew I could start on two projects. The first one at a voluntary school as a teacher English. At this community center a lot of possible projects could be started. Besides teaching two classes, I made workshops about plastic waste/recycling and I talked about ways to finance the programm.

Read more about this center at COLT Cambodia.

Besides teaching, I also worked on a project about sustainable ecotourism. The idea was to bring tourism and local Cambodians together to create an income for these poor families. This project was worked on with a Cambodian Entrepreneur and Biologist. This project is continued after I went back home.

The ecotourism site provides a much needed alternave venue for team buildings and recreang. It can also be used for professional and personal network and/or a place to go for to get rest in the beauful surroundings .

education

While staying at the site, students and schoolkids can learn about the botanical garden with amongst others a locaon which is used for research. Another opon is a workshop about recycling plasc waste and composng organic food waste.

The community is the driving force behind all the acvies. They provide homestays, tours, workshops and food for the tourist. They are involved in the waste-management which contains the composng

organic food and the recycling of plasc waste.

On the site, there will be farms which grows crops, fruits and vegetables. Think about a peper plantaon, cashew-nuts, bananas and pineapples. This can be sold to the tourists or used for preparing food for the trips and homestays.

botanical garden

This botanical garden includes a seed bank, medicinical plants, greenhouses, horcul-ture and ethnobothany. It can be used for rese-arch purposes. Of course, the composted organic waste will be used as ferlizer for expanding the garden.

waste management

The organic food from this site will be used to compost it into ferlizer. This will be used to feed the plants in the botanical garden and the vegetables and fruit farm. The plasc can be recycled into new products by collecng, shredding and molding.

adventures

Local people will be the guides to provide tours to the beauful spots on the site, hikes to the mountain, guides to the water streams and so on. Also think about a zipline from the mountain or swimming or kayaking near the waterfall.

At last , I started a project about plastic recycling as well. Plastic waste is a huge problem in the country and the locals don’t know about the consequences. They just throw everything on the ground or in the river and they are burning it in their garden.I came in contact with some other people who wanted to start a social business. After some meetings and talks, I had to go back home. At this moment, some other students are working on this ‘project’ by doing research about the possibilities and potentials.

Check out http://www.arnoldhubach.nl/buitenland-en-reizen.htmlto read more about this adventure. During this period I did not become a better product designer. I learned more as a human being and found out that I’m also very keen on Project Management.

OTHERS

I have had lessons in digital sketching. For this course I made a waterscooter for a transport company. I have also made a chair for injection molding and roto molding. Furthermore, I have developed a bike for young children and eventually I made a parasol which rotates around your table and folows the sun so you will always be in the shadow.

Of course I have designed much more products than the one which I have shown. I have gathered these and they can be seen in this chapter.

Page 17: ARNOLD HUBACH PORTFOLIOarnoldhubach.nl/assets/portfolio-arnold-hubach.pdf · the fourth year of Industrial Product Design. In this portfolio I will show you some products which I

I made a stool, containing two seperate parts, which is designed according to the designrules for injection molding. I have also made one for roto molding with the rules for that productions technique.

I made a trike, containing several parts and materials. I had to show that I can use all the SolidWorks features, like extrudes, sweeps, lofts and surfaces. This have I developed in my first year of my study.

This is the waterscooter which I made for the course Digital Sketching. This were my first assignment to use the Wacom tablet and create something with layers of highlights, sketches and shadows. The end-result can be seen on the previous page.

This is the rotasol. It is a parasol which can be placed over your table and chairs. It will move with the speed of the sun so you will be always in the shadow; even when the sun is moving and setting. This product is made for TT Engineering.
