stories worth singing
2014/15 season
p r e s e n t e d b y
Each of us has a voice. We use our voice daily
as a source of primary communication, and
whether or not you consciously study how you
use your voice, you are an expert on your own
instrument. Your family and friends immediately
hear the cadence and emotion of your voice—at
work or home, in public and private settings, over
the phone or in person—and you become adept
at telling stories that matter to you. We share
stories to connect us to the past, to form bonds
with each other, to acknowledge that we are not
alone, and to create shared hope for a brighter
future. The heart of Arizona Opera’s mission is
to find stories that matter, stories that will help
connect us to people in communities across our
state and beyond. We give everything we have
to bring these stories to life through the power
of music and the human voice. We are excited
when we find ourselves in these stories and in
these songs—we are even more gratified when
you do too! At Arizona Opera, we tell stories
worth singing. This season, we offer five amazing
stories in six languages. These carefully chosen
stories resound with our purpose as a company,
and we hope our voices resonate with you.

A court jester isn’t quite
so funny when he has
revenge on his mind.
With unforgettable arias that are
synonymous with italian Opera
and a dramatic, twisting plot,
Rigoletto features dark assassins,
a philandering Duke and the self-
sacrificing Gilda. This lush production
set in 16th century Mantua features
baritone Michael corvino as
Rigoletto, who “brings a robust voice
and disarming vulnerability to the
role.” – The new York Times.

F rom Pushkin’s classic poem
comes Tchaikovsky’s theatrical
magnum opus. Onegin is a
man egotistical enough to turn his
back on love and a gun on his best
friend. set in st. Petersburg and the
snowy Russian countryside, this new
production features David Adam
Moore in the title role, whose gritty
interpretation is both riveting and
terrifying. Tchaikovsky’s intense score
thrills with glorious melodies and rich
orchestration, making this the must-
see event of the season.
Sung in Russian with English Supertitles

F ull of charming, magical
melodies and fantastic
creatures, Mozart’s beloved
tale follows Prince Tamino and
bird-catcher Papageno on an
adventure to rescue Princess Pamina.
As they face unexpected trials
and challenges on their journey,
audiences will delight as the genius
and imagination of the composer
unfolds before their eyes.
Mozart’s final masterpiece is a light-
hearted but profound look at man’s
search for love and his struggle to
attain wisdom.
Sung in German with English Supertitles
