2015 season p.1 Opera goes straight to your soul stuart maunder am nz opera general director It is an extraordinary experience to be sung to. Even more so to encounter the world’s greatest stories, told through the most wondrous music ever imagined. This is why opera is that most complete and satisfying of art forms, bringing together as it does music, drama and design to create a complete world of sight, sound and transformative emotion. My working life has been firmly rooted in this art form, and I am delighted to share with you, three of the very best in our 2015 New Zealand Opera Season. La cenerentola, Madama Butterfly and Tosca are among the greatest masterpieces of the repertoire. Playful, violent, uplifting and utterly heartbreaking, these sublime stories reflect what it is to be human — to struggle, to hope and to be brave enough to love unconditionally. I am thrilled to be bringing our stunning Madama Butterfly to Christchurch, and to celebrate the reopening of the Isaac Theatre Royal. I am also excited to showcase some of New Zealand’s best opera talent. Sarah Castle’s heart-warming Cinderella proves that Rossini’s La cenerentola is so much more than a mere fairy-tale. In Puccini's Tosca we present Phillip Rhodes as the deliciously evil Baron Scarpia, and it is particularly exciting to be able to present Simon O’Neill as Cavaradossi, one of opera’s most romantic and heroic roles. It is wonderful that every one of our extraordinary female leads — Orla Boylan, Anne-Sophie Duprels, and our own Sarah Castle — has previously sung with the company. We welcome them back to create for us three of opera's most engaging, enigmatic and complete characters. Come and experience the power of opera and our 2015 season.

It is an extraordinary experience to be sung to. Rossini’s dazzling La cenerentola is a fairy-tale with a difference. In this Cinderella story, stepfathers are tyrants, beggar-philosophers replace fairy godmothers, and a silver bangle stands in for that glass slipper. Brilliantly quirky, Rossini’s magically mischievous music tells a very human story of kindness, forgiveness and generosity.

New Zealanders Sarah Castle, Amelia Berry and Rachelle Pike shine in this delicious tale. While Castle enchants in the virtuosic title role, her magnificently naughty stepsisters run wild. Adding an international flavour, John Tessier steals hearts as our dashing Prince with Marcin Bronikowski as his reliable sidekick Dandini. Andrew Collis tries to spoil everyone’s plans as the evil stepfather, while the divine Ashraf Sewailam leads us towards our happy ever after. This beloved fairytale-opera comes to life in our most vivacious and effervescent show of the season. Brought together under the supreme direction of Lindy Hume and Wyn Davies, La cenerentola will be, quite simply, magic.

Madama Butterfly is a timeless story of hope, honour, fidelity and love, woven together with such exquisite devotion that it now stands as one of the most meaningful and moving experiences one can have in the theatre. Puccini’s luminescent

‘Humming Chorus’ holds all the promise of a summer’s night, all the perfume of cherry blossoms — and all the anguish of a young girl desperately in love. The equally iconic aria ‘Un bel dì’ is famous for capturing the very essence of Cio-Cio-San’s innocence. This is the power of Puccini and we are thrilled to bring our 2013 production of this exquisite opera to Christchurch audiences.

To mark the stunning refurbishment of the Isaac Theatre Royal we share director Kate Cherry and designers Christina Smith and Matt Scott's beautiful vision for this opera, with sumptuously detailed costumes and scenery bathed in dreamy washes of colour. With a sublime cast, this production is an experience that will be cherished long after the curtain has fallen.

As Simon Wilson wrote in his Metro review: “If you’re an old fan of Butterfly… you will not be disappointed. If you’re new to opera and hoping for seduction, this is the one.” We couldn’t agree more.

Accompanied by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Wellington. Featuring the NZ Opera Chorus. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. A New Zealand Opera production.

Tosca is the opera that conquered the world. This passionate story of lust, revenge and sacrifice completely overwhelmed its first audiences, and swiftly became one of the most successful and beloved operas in the repertoire. Jealous and fiercely loyal, Tosca‘s turbulent contradictions compel us. She loves passionately yet holds firm to her faith; she’s overwhelmingly generous while also ruthlessly violent. Tosca is the fire that burns throughout this monumental drama. She is the ultimate Diva.

We are thrilled to announce that Orla Boylan, who stunned audiences in our 2013 The Flying Dutchman, will sing this captivating title role. In this production she is met by men worth fighting for — or against. As Cavaradossi, the brilliant Simon O’Neill unleashes the Italian hero within as his soaring voice takes flight in one of the best tenor roles ever composed. He meets his match in Phillip Rhodes’s fanatically evil Scarpia. Performing roles they were born to sing, these two New Zealanders bring all the drama to this most dramatic of operas.

With Puccini’s powerful and visceral music illuminating the beauty and the ancient faith of the Eternal City, we defy you not to lose your heart to Tosca — and your soul to this extraordinary story.

When do bookings open for the 2015 opera season?Subscription bookings open on 28 October 2014 and are only available through the NZ Opera Box Office and www.nzopera.com. Early subscribers who book before 9 February 2015 also get their preferred choice of seating. After this date all bookings will be processed in order of receipt. Subscription bookings close following the final performance of Madama Butterfly in August 2015. When are single tickets available for the 2015 opera season?Single ticket bookings for each opera go on sale through Ticketmaster (Auckland performances) and Ticketek (Wellington and Christchurch performances) on 9 February 2015. Single ticket bookings can also be made through the NZ Opera Box Office.

Does the opera offer concessions for senior citizens and students?Absolutely. Concessions for senior citizens and students are available at all performances. To qualify, simply enclose proof of eligibility with your booking form or present your ID when booking at the box office or collecting your tickets. Discounts are available on B-Reserve, A-Reserve, Silver, Gold and Premium Reserve seats. Senior Citizens are classified as anyone over the age of 65.

How do discounts work for subscriptions and concessions?Only one type of discount (whichever is the greater) can be applied to each booking. For example, if you enjoy a subscription discount you cannot also claim concession discounts on the same tickets.

Are there facilities at the venues if I have a mobility issue?Yes. All venues have mobility access and wheelchair facilities. For more details contact our Box Office on 0800 NZOPERA (696 737).

Are there facilities for patrons who are hard of hearing?Yes. Our main stage opera venues have hearing loop facilities. To discover more contact our Box Office on 0800 NZOPERA (696 737).

Does NZ Opera offer audio description and sign language services?Yes. We are planning to offer both these services in 2015 and will announce more details on www.nzopera.com and through our social media networks in the new year.

What are surtitles?English surtitles are projected on screens above the stage at all of our performances so you can easily follow the story. A few seats can have a restricted surtitle view — please check with the box office at time of booking.

Do your operas always start on time?Yes. Out of respect for our audiences and artists and to minimise interruptions, we implement a lock-out policy once the performance has begun. Latecomers will be admitted when a suitable break in the performance occurs. At times this can be well into the first Act so we suggest allowing as much time as possible for parking and arrival.

What are the best car parking options for your venue?Visit www.nzopera.com for information on the best car parking options in your preferred city.

Where can I get dinner before the show?NZ Opera has superb restaurant partners in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington who offer pre-dinner packages on performance nights. Visit our website for details closer to each opera season.
