Architectural Resources Group helps people realize opportunities in the historic built environ-ment that celebrate the continuity of time and place. We navigate the range of needs and issues for clients and their historic properties to create great places, enhance investment, and enliven com-munities. Founded in 1980, Architectural Resources Group is a 50 person architectural practice with offices in San Francisco, Pasadena, and Portland. We provide a wide range of specialized architectural, material conservation, and planning services for rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, and new design of culturally or environmentally sensitive properties.

INTEGRATEd APPROACH

Architectural Resources Group principals and staff members are nationally recognized experts in renovations and new construction and bring extensive experience applying The Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Our professional staff includes 18 reg-istered architects, six architectural historians, four architectural conservators, and seven designers. Our experience includes award-winning innovative solutions for the adaptive reuse and seismic strengthening of existing structures, stabilization schemes, materials conservation, documenta-tion, and restoration of historic properties, universal access design, and design of new structures.

COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINAbLE dESIGN

We are recognized leaders in sustainable preservation. Our approach is to find the appropriate balance point where both preservation and sustainability goals are met. Currently, Architectural Resources Group has completed one LEED Platinum project, four LEED Gold projects and two LEED Silver project, and we have seven LEED projects in design and construction. Fourteen staff members are LEED Accredited Professionals.

AwARdS ANd RECOGNITION

The firm has received over one hundred awards for excellence in architecture, historic preserva-tion, and planning from national organizations including the American Institute of Architects, California Preservation Foundation, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 2006, the AIA California Council awarded Architectural Resources Group as Firm of the Year, the highest honor AIACC can bestow on an architecture firm. The award recognizes firms who consistently produced distinguished architecture for a period of at least 10 years and produced work that has transcended a singular area of expertise.

The design team and users were fully committed to making the laboratories functional for current users, maintaining the historic character of the building, and making the building as environmentally friendly as possible.


The Caltech Linde + Robinson Lab for Global Environmental Science (LGES) is an historically significant academic building located at the California Institute of Technology. The original astrophysics laboratory was constructed in 1932 to house the team fabricating the world’s largest, 200-inch telescope. The Architect of Record was Mayers, Murray & Phillip (formerly the Goodhue Associates) who collaborated with lead designer Russell Porter. The building’s original function, studying the sun, is reflected in its massing and solar tower, and in the cast stone panels, light fixtures, and other ornamentation incorporating celestial and solar motifs. ARG led a team of 12 specialized consultants.

LINdE + RObINSON LAb FOR GLObAL ENvIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

PASAdENA, CALIFORNIA

The project involves innovative sustainable measures that take advantage of the building design including: exploiting the concrete building’s thermal mass; maintaining the original sun-telescope (coelostat) to daylight the building; and using the lower portion of the telescope pit to hold water to supply a radiant heating and cooling system.

The Linde + Robinson Lab achieves several ground-breaking ‘firsts,’ including the first LEED Platinum-rated renovation of an historic lab building and the lowest energy use of any physical science research lab.

Pasadena City Hall, completed in 1927, is a significant example of the City Beautiful movement of the 1920s. City Hall was designed by Bakewell and Brown in the California Mediterranean style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a reinforced-concrete structure with a stucco rendering, elaborate cast stone ornamentation, tile roofs, and a monumental domed tower.

ARG served as the prime architect on the building’s seismic retrofit and phased rehabilitation and renovation. We began our project at Pasadena City Hall with a Historic Structure Report in 1989 and the project culminated in 2007 with the rehabilitation and seismic strengthening of the building while achieving a LEED Gold rating. ARG worked extensively with City building and planning departments to successfully integrate many municipal functions under one roof.

PASAdENA CITy HALL

PASAdENA, CALIFORNIA

The firm completed a comprehensive survey of existing conditions, then provided a schedule for interior renovation and complete exterior restoration. This work included a seismic retrofit with a base isolation system, and the replacement of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Design work also included reprogramming of office and meeting spaces throughout the building. Historically significant interior spaces, features and elements were rehabilitated and restored including the Council Chamber. The building was completely re-wired for current IT and AV uses. Additionally, ARG designed upgrades to meet fire and life safety codes and accessibility requirements. The exterior plaster and cast stone facade was repaired and restored to its original design.

Located opposite Fort Point at the entrance to San Francisco Bay, Cavallo Point, the Lodge at the Golden Gate, formally known as Fort Baker, is a cluster of historic buildings arranged around the 10-acre parade ground. The buildings represent some of the nation’s finest turn-of-the-century military architecture. The project represents a unique public, private and non-profit alliance created to sustainably restore, enhance, adapt, and preserve the historic military site for a new use.

ARG developed the conceptual master plan for adaptation of the site as a retreat and conference center. ARG is the Architect of Record for the rehabilitation elements of the project. Collaborating with the developer and NPS, ARG designed the adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of twenty-one historic buildings, creating a conference center with meeting rooms, offices, restaurant, bar, and guest accommodations that is a model of

preservation and sustainable development. Rehabilitation included architectural upgrades, seismic strengthening, new MEP systems, accessibility upgrades, and exterior restoration. Missing two-story porches were reconstructed on the historic barracks and all existing porches and stairs were repaired. The historic decorative tin ceilings were removed and reinstalled in fifteen buildings to allow for installation of an acoustic separation, while preserving these features. The project took advantage of the Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit program and met the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

The project powerfully demonstrates the inter-relationship between preservation and sustainable design. It incorporates many sustainable features, from preservation of the historic buildings and use of green materials, to energy and water-saving systems.
