Notes On Classmates This news came over about 5 minutes after the last newsletter was sent out over the email waves. In June, Roger Glovsky opened his own law firm - Glovsky Law LLC - and started his new web venture, Legal Innovations LLC, a website that focuses on helping businesses get the documentation they n e e d q u i c k l y a n d inexpensively. In addition, Roger writes “I moved to Colorado with my family 5 years ago. We live in Boulder, a special place that is socially conscious and inspiring. My son is attending an innovative school (Watershed) that teaches real world problem-solving. I love hiking and skiing in the Rocky Mountains. It's a year round play ground!” Also in July, Scott Osman joined Good Omen as a director and strategist. Good Omen is a “next-gen brand consultancy” Scott’s team provides their clients “a unique, purpose-led a p p r o a c h t h r o u g h leadership, strategy, design and program management to expand the capabilities of agencies and internal corporate teams.”

JC Stahl noticed in the last newsletter mention of sons and daughters of classmates who graduated this past June. Well, he sent along this 3-generation picture of his father, himself and his up-and-coming undergrad. JC commented “Attached is a photo taken on Father's Day this year of my father, class of '52; me, class of '80, and my son (not grandson - son), potential class of I-don't-even-want-to-do- the-numbers.” To catch up more with JC, go to h i s b l o g s p o t a t h t t p : / / j c -spacepoet.blogspot.com/.

Co-president Brian Boyer writes “I had an impromptu get-together in Jamestown, RI with our classmate, Curt Richardson. Curt is retired now (since age 49!), so for the last seven years, after he sold his wine retail business in Newport, which he had been operating for 15 years. Curt is a permanent resident of Jamestown, a small island sandwiched be tween Newport and the western mainland of RI. People drive right over it on their way up to the Cape without even noticing, for which the Jamestown residents are thankful. I was out there on vacation visiting my father

who is a permanent resident also. Curt and I have been exchanging e-mails the last couple of years, hoping to get together. This year we finally made it happen. Curt wants to engage more with our class, so he is joining the Reunion Planning Committee.“ And co-president Cameron Crone Bilger wrote a great article recently on the power of social networking, and specifically LinkedIn. Check out the article published at Examiner.com, at http://www.examiner.com/article/secrets-to-success-silicon-valley-social-networking-with-linkedin?cid=rss. In a recent listing of top industrial and contractor s u p p l y d i s t r i b u t o r s , published in the Modern Distribution Management, newsletter, F. W. Webb & Co. ranked #19 on the list, among some heady company. Congratulations to our own Jeff Pope and all at F. W. Webb! Back in March, Gretchen Kruysman was named the director of marketing for Johnny’s Selected Seeds, in Fairfield, Maine. Gretchen writes “I'm loving life here in Maine…lots of sailing and skiing. My son and daughter are now both graduated from college. Hooray! Just got engaged to a wonderful father of 3 from Yarmouth, Maine. A bunch of us former field hockey, lacrosse and squash jocks got together on the Cape in June. I had a great time and lots of laughs seeing Carol "Krunch" Krensky Houston '80, Ellen "Rems" Remsen Webb '80, Annabelle Canning '81, Jenny "Toolin" McAuliffe '81, Danielle Dyer '81 and Colleen Bartlett 79.” Congratulations on your engagement, Gretchen!

In July, Richard Voos was named the Assistant Provost for Planning, Assessment and Accreditation at Simmons College in Boston, MA. Richard has been at Simmons since 2011, having moved over after 10 years in similar roles at Babson College. Also in July, Richard was named the Board Chair at the Christa McAuliffe Regional Charter Public Middle School in Framingham, MA. In April, Dave Lightle was selected as the C.E.O. of Wright Brothers USA/Wright Brothers Worldwide, looking after the licensing of the Wright Brothers name. Dave offers “It is a rare event in one's professional life when the family of two of the most famous guys who ever lived entrusts you with their family name. Yet, that is the challenge that the Wright Family has bestowed upon my partners and me. While the licensing side of our business is up and running, we have embarked on a new mission to create our own line of The Wright Brothers branded products. It's time to fly high!” Earlier this year, Maria Basescu was named the Executive Director of the Next Stage Arts Project. Maria writes “We just received a $370,000 grant from ArtPlace America, national recognition for our project to build rural community cultural revival. My work, as Executive Director, is to lead our organization's programming of music, theater, spoken word and film events, working in close collaboration with area partners including schools and cultural organizations.”

Jon Snider sent this note along from his Colorado Springs, CO home - ”My wife Cheryl and I were in Hanover this June for the graduation of o u r d a u g h t e r , V i v i a n ‘14. Recently we’ve been back for the graduation ceremonies of Kevin ‘10 and Erik ‘11, and wi l l short ly begin the impossible task of finding hotel rooms in early June for Michael ‘16, who is currently enjoying his sophomore summer. We’ve been so fortunate keeping the Dartmouth connection alive with our children, and it’s been a lot of fun getting back to Hanover so often after an even longer time away.” Four kids graduating from Dartmouth??? WOW!!!

I’m sure you all noticed in the July 2014 Speaking Of Dartmouth email the faculty profile on our own Susan Ackerman. Susan does a Q&A on the Phenomenon of Religion - you can check out the prof i le at ht tp: / /now.dartmouth.edu/2014/07/susan-ackerman-80-on-the-

phenomenon-of-religion/. On Saturday, September 6th, Lynn Carman Bodden participated in the Madison (CT) Triathlon - her first triathlon event. Lynn writes “it was a SPRINT tri! Much shorter and more do-able, and such a good experience in the training. First open water swim I got a jellyfish in the face! Guilford (CT) is beautiful and idyllic, work is challenging. Looking forward to when this job is done and I can move into the house Peter and I just bought in the historic Stockade neighborhood of Schenectady (NY).”

And our most recent news comes from Andy Beran and Tricia Nast Beran - “Just wanted to report that we celebrated two big events in August - the birth of twins (one boy and one girl) to our daughter Shana and her husband Justin - and the engagement of our other daughter Miriam to Bill. Busy month - and hard for these elderly grandparents to keep up with the pace.”

The Parker A. Small Class Of 1980 Award

The Class of 1980 is pleased to announce the Parker A. Small Class of 1980 Award. This award will be given for the first time to one or more deserving classmates at our 35th reunion in 2015, and thereafter at reunions or other significant class events. A committee (cons is t ing o f Geoff Edelson, Kal Alston, Bruce Duthu, Susan Fagerstrom, Bill Goodspeed, Wade Herring, Tom Marek, Lisa Shanahan, Katie Currier Small, and Ellen Remsen Webb) has set the award criteria (below) and will vet all nominees. Classmates should submit their nomination(s) to Geoff at [email protected], along with supporting information as to why the nominee should receive the award. Please submit the nomination by October 20, 2014. Any of the committee members are available to answer classmates’ questions about this exciting award, an opportunity to honor Parker’s memory and to honor each other. PARKER A. SMALL CLASS OF 1980 AWARD

The Parker A. Small Class of 1980 Award recognizes members of Dartmouth College’s Class of 1980 who have worked for the greater good, whether professionally or as a volunteer. While Dartmouth’s spell on us remains, the Parker Small Award is intended to recognize activities in and about the wider world outside of Hanover, rather than Dartmouth activities and philanthropy, or Class of 1980 contributions. The Award will be given to a classmate or classmates whose work, whether professional or volunteer:

Made a significant impact in their community or field of endeavor. “Significant impact” may include incremental change, as well as change more broadly felt; or

Advocated for or advanced social justice,

in areas including, by way of example, equal rights, anti-poverty, hunger elimination, peace, or anti-violence; or

Targeted efforts to benefit humanity in

fields such as the environment, education, or health, or;

Inspired others with their example of

servant leadership; or Expanded the body of human knowledge.

Priority will be given to classmates who have worked quietly without previous recognition. Persons who have been elsewhere acknowledged may also merit selection for the Parker A. Small Class of 1980 Award so that the Class of 1980 can express its affirmation and gratitude.

included Curt Palmer, Joel Chansky, Barry Ryan, Brian Wicks, Stan Smith, Curt Flight and Bruce Daniels. Curt Palmer writes “We all were attending the annual Milliman golf outing at Ferncroft CC as guests of Joel Chansky who is a consulting actuary in Milliman's Boston office. Can't say much about the golf (at least personally!), but we all had a great time visiting and getting caught up. We figured we'd send this now, well in advance of our 35th reunion, so no one would be shocked at how old we all look!” I don’t know, from my perspective, I think this is a young looking group of guys!

Class Officers Weekend The weekend of September 12th-13th was Class Officers’ Weekend, where a number of your class executive committee members travel to Hanover and learn what’s new at the college and what’s coming down the pike. Attending on your behalf this year were Brian Boyer, Cameron Crone Bilger, Merle Adelman, Joe Mannes, Cathy McGrath, Lisa Shanahan, Katie Laud, Rich Akerboom, Dave Bumsted, and yours truly, Eric Pfeiffer. A number of other ’80’s were in town for the COW sessions, as well

(including Trustees Bill Helman and Denise Dupre). During the Friday night dinner, classmate Joe Mannes was selected the Treasurer Of The Year for classes out 26 years or more. Joe has been our class treasurer since 2005. Over the past 10 years, Joe is thorough, focused and professional, yet is also easy to work with, making “numbers” fun and understandable. Joe, your selection was overdue! Random COW Observations - As I was sitting on a bench at the northwest corner of the Green on Friday afternoon, two things struck me. First, looking around all four sides of the Green, it dawned on me that the scene looked just about identical to what it looked like during our time at Dartmouth - the four sides of the Green are truly timeless … something that virtually all classes alive today share. The second thing that struck me was the number of students walking from the Hop to their dorms with Amazon (and other) boxes in their arms. When we went to Dartmouth, we shopped downtown or in West Leb and carried our treasures home in bags. Today’s students shop on the internet and carry their treasures back to their dorm rooms in a great mound of corrugated! Here’s a note from our co-presidents, Cami and Brian, summarizing the great weekend: Dear Classmates: It is hard to believe that this is our fifth year as co-Presidents attending Class Officers' Weekend in Hanover. We spent nearly three days in Hanover and were joined by fellow Executive Committee members: Merle Adelman, Joe Mannes, Cathy McGrath, Dave Bumsted, Regina Ketting, Lisa Shanahan, Katie Wiley Laud, Eric Pfeiffer and Rich "Boomer" Akerboom. In the short time we were on campus, we can safely say that the college is re-energizing itself along several very exciting dimensions. First of all, for those of you who may not

have been up in Hanover in, oh, the last 34 years, there are numerous changes to the campus geography. The Hanover Inn has been completely renovated (Kudos to our own Denise Dupre, who with her hospitality industry background, provided Trustee oversight of the project.) The end result is truly stunning and a must-stay for anyone passing through town. Numerous new classroom buildings and dormitories have sprung up like mushrooms around campus in the intervening years, some with familiar names--Kemeny, Haldeman, Maclean. There is the new Black Family Visual Arts Center south of the Hop and the just-opened Dartmouth Entrepreneur Network (DEN) Innovation Center also south of the Hop across the street from the Motor Lodge. Buildings that may look familiar on the outside are now very different on the inside, e.g. the Class of '53 Commons (aka Thayer Dining Hall), Baker Library, and Webster Hall (now the Rauner Library for rare books.) But despite all these changes, the college retains its endearing New England "look and feel" that all of us loved during our tenure there. The "internal" landscape has changed also with the arrival of President Phil Hanlon, now beginning his second year on the job. (Kudos to Bill Helman who led the presidential search and has now stepped up as the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees, of which John Rich is also a member.) Phil has wasted no time in making his mark, launching Moving Dartmouth Forward, a well-publicized initiative to face head-on the challenging task of ending high-risk and harmful behaviors. The focus is in three key areas: sexual assault, extreme drinking and making Dartmouth a more inclusive place for students of all backgrounds. These are issues facing universities across the country, not just Dartmouth. However, at Class Officers Weekend, many officers discussed the frustrating perception that Dartmouth garners more than its fair share of negative publicity in the popular press on these topics. We are optimistic that once the behaviors have been mitigated favorable press will ultimately follow. So with all that is changing, we urge you to pay a visit to Hanover in the coming year and experience an evolving Dartmouth campus. What better opportunity to do that than by attending our 35th reunion next June! This reunion year is particularly exciting, as the college is returning us to the "cluster"

format for the first time in 20 years. We are partnering up with the '79's and '81's. Planning for our class activities has already begun under the auspices of Cathy McGrath, who has agreed to be our Reunion Chair, demonstrating once again her deep affection for our class and the college. She has rallied a "brain trust" which includes Katie Wiley Laud and Lisa Shanahan to assist her in the planning of this gala event. We know that many of you have volunteered to help out with the reunion effort...and thank you all for that. Reunion works best as a full-class effort, so if you have a desire to reconnect with your alma mater, now is a great time to volunteer for any of a myriad of tasks, large or small, to help out Cathy and her team. Even something as simple as helping us get current e-mail addresses is vital. We guarantee there is a role that intersects with your interests and your talents. To see how you can contribute, please e-mail Cathy at [email protected]. We would be remiss in not mentioning the award of Class Treasurer of the Year to Joe Mannes. Joe has been a ten-year steward of our class's finances and received the award for his years of service and his commitment to share his knowledge of best financial practices with other, particularly younger, classes. Thank you, Joe, for all that you do for the Class of 1980! We hope with this brief update, we have been able to convey to all of you a multitude of reasons for you to come to Hanover next June to attend our Reunion, at the very least to rekindle friendships and re-discover Dartmouth! Forever Green, Brian Boyer and Cameron Crone Bilger (on behalf of the Class of 1980 Executive Committee)

The Generous Class of 1980 August 2nd and 3rd were the dates for this year’s Pan-Mass Challenge, the 35th time this annual event to raise funds for Dana-Farber to combat cancer has been held. For those of you not familiar with the Pan-Mass Challenge, this is a bike ride from Sturbridge,

MA to Provincetown, MA – a 188 mile bike ride! The PMC was started in 1980, and has grown from a modest event to the PMC we know today, which featured over 5,500 riders and raised $39 Million in 2013. Classmate David Teplow mentioned his participation on LinkedIn, and that made me wonder how many other classmates were involved in the PMC, either as riders, volunteers or donors. What I found was that our class is very involved in a number of events – we truly are a class that cares and believes in giving back and helping others! Some of the great comments I received back include: David Teplow – “With generous donations to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in honor of my ride, I would certainly include classmates Merle Adelman, Tom Cammann and yourself as having participated. TC also sent me a moving letter about two cancer victims who he was close to, along with two bracelets that memorialize them, which I wear as reminders of why events like the PMC matter so much.”

Merle Adelman – “David beat me to the "punch." Ron and I are regular supporters of David and several other friends who ride annually. This is the bike fundraiser that started it all, and has grown to raise $40 million over the two day weekend. David and his family team raise an incredible amount of money every year and we are happy to help. Of course we do our annual ride on behalf of the American Diabetes

Association. . . . I'll bet there are many folks out there who do fundraising rides, walks or runs - Meg LePage did one a few years ago - right around our last reunion.” Chris Harris – “I no longer ride the PMC due to just not being able to raise enough money. :-(. Instead, I am regularly one of the mechanics at the Dighton Rehobeth lunch stop on Saturday! Besides the PMC, I participate as a rider in two American Lung Association rides each year too.” Charlie Moore – “I wasn't able to do it this year, but have in the past. It is an incredibly moving experience.” Maria Basescu – “I haven't ridden the Pan-Mass Challenge, however I am once again riding the century in Vermont's Harpoon ride to benefit the Vermont Food Bank, coming up on August 9. Love the cause, the way the ride is organized, the camaraderie, the whole enchilada. I think it's worthy of note.” Kevin Boyle – “I haven't done the Pan-Mass but I did the Best Buddies Boston to Hyannis ride in May. It's another great charity event.” Way To Go, Class Of 1980!

Tidbits on Dartmouth In September, U.S. News & World Report published a listing of the Top 10 Best Value Schools - schools providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible price. Dartmouth finished in the Top 10 for the National Universities category (listed alphabetically), along with 5 other Ivy’s. Class of 1980 35th Reunion Our 25th reunion was a smashing success; our 30th reunion broke records! Yet while we were proud of awards from the College for both

reunions - “record setting attendance,” etc., etc., etc. - what many of us felt, the most, was the energy and joy of invigorated old and new friendships. Those of you who have been to one of the major reunions can relate … there’s nothing quite like rekindling all those great connections from our four years on the Hanover plain. The chance to catch up with classmates that we may have fallen out of touch with over t h e y e a r s i s j u s t u n m a t c h e d ! Cathy McGrath, our Reunion Chairperson, writes: SAVE THE DATE! Our 35th reunion is Friday June 19th through Sunday June 21st, 2015, with a handful of pre-reunion events on Thursday the 18th. The ‘79s and ‘81s will be re-uning at the same time - their reunion chairs are Charlie Vieth ’79, Ellen Oppenheim ’79, and Rick Silverman ’81 - and we are planning some joint events with both classes. Have ideas for events, sessions, or recreation? Hints on your favorite brew or bites? Want to help with the planning (which, so far, has been great fun!) Contact Cathy McGrath at [email protected].

A note from our Gift Planning Chair Regina Ketting

At Class Officers’ Weekend on September 13th, I presented the Ford Whelden '25 & Robert Kaiser '39 Award to Gift Planning Chairs-of-the-Year Peter Palin '61 and John Damon '61. The Class of ‘61 added 10 new members to the Bartlett Tower Society (BTS) last year, bringing class membership to 43. Bravo!

Kudos, too, to the 25 classmates in ’80 whose names appear on the BTS honor roll. The College greatly appreciates your thoughtful support through bequest intentions and life income plans. BTS recognizes alumni, parents and friends who have thoughtfully planned for Dartmouth in their estate plans. For most planned gifts, there is no minimum gift size. The 35th reunion is fast-approaching and, like

the ’61’s, our goal is to add 10 BTS members by June 30. Laura is knowledgeable, efficient and easy to work with, and she stands ready to help ’80 reach a total of 35 BTS members. Remember that you can qualify for BTS membership by including a bequest provision for Dartmouth in your will or trust, designating Dartmouth as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy, or establishing a charitable gift annuity, with a deferral period; fixed payments start at age 65. Thank you for giving thought to this fantastic way to express appreciation for your Dartmouth experience! I will be attending the annual BTS reception at the Hanover Inn on November 19 and will bring back more news then. Enjoy a beautiful autumn!

Laurie Van Buskirk Fund The Executive Committee wanted to communicate an important change to the Laurie Van Buskirk Fund. As a reminder, the Laurie Van Buskirk Fund was conceived as a way to honor the memory of our classmate, Laurie Van Buskirk, and her passion for the Dartmouth Outing Club. Proceeds from the fund have been used to pay scholarships for incoming freshman who need additional financial support to participate in a first-year trip. In recent years the amount of

new monies contributed to the fund has exceeded the actual scholarship needs for Freshman Trips. Thus the Executive Committee with the support of the college decided to change the charter of the fund slightly and add additional uses for the fund including the payment of general first-year trip registration fees and, if additional funds remain, for general DOC purposes. (Note that no more than 5% of the total available LVB fund corpus can be spent in any one year.) We feel that these changes honor the original intent of the fund and Laurie's commitment to the DOC. If you have any questions about these changes to the LVB fund, feel free to contact your class co-presidents, Brian Boyer ([email protected]) or Cameron Crone Bilger ([email protected]).
