2014 MINI-REUNION WEEKEND

This year’s Mini-Reunion is coming up fast. Hopefully we will get more classmates to return to Hanover for the Mini- Reunion. This fall due to popular request the mini will on the dates of the official homecoming weekend (October 17-19th).

• DATE: October 17-19 • PRIMARY LODGING: The Dowd’s Country Inn (Lyme, NH) • FOOTBALL GAME: Holy Cross at 1:30 PM

This is our tenth year at Dowd’s and it has worked out well.

• If you haven’t made a reservation but want to attend, please communicate directly with the Country Inn, and let Tami Dowd or her assistants know you’re part of the Class of ’62. [email protected]; 800-482-4712. Currently there are 9 rooms available at Dowd’s and our class will reserve them until September first, thereafter we will release them to the Dowd’s.

• Alternatively, you might check with the Lyme Inn (603-795-4824), the White Goose Inn (603-353-1182) and the Silver Maple Lodge in Fairlee (802-333-4336). Fairlee is a quick 5-minute trip across the river.

• Let us know if you’re staying someplace other than Dowd’s, so that I can ensure that updated schedules/directions are distributed to you.

We’re altering our traditional schedule of activities: Because it is homecoming weekend so there will be a bonfire and marching.

For those marching or not we will convene at the Paganucci Lounge at 4:30 pm on Friday October 17th. The Paganucci Lounge is a banquet room in the Class of 1952 Commons or what we remember as the Thayer Dining Hall and we will serve the usual beer/wine and pizza and other sandwiches and snacks. We will have the food and drinks available from 4:30 until about 10:00 PM. Because the college is in session we are requested to bring no open drinks outside or invite minors to imbibe with us.

Saturday morning The annual Class meeting will be held on campus in Room 301 of the Black Family Visual Arts Center (Black VAC) at 9:30 AM. The Black VAC is the new building next to the Hopkins Center and behind the old art museum. The room has lots of glass and a hollow square table arrangement. This is a

fantastic venue for our class meeting. Our thanks are to Charlie Balch for booking this again. At the class meeting we will hear from President Alan Rapoport and Treasurer-for-Life, Charlie Balch, on class finances, the class Rhetoric project, and from Tom Komarek about the Class Birthday Party in San Diego in 2015.

Tailgating begins on the AD lawn around 11:00. Beer/wine, pizza, sandwiches and assorted finger food. Nancy Walters will provide her usual fantastic food.

Football vs. Holy Cross will attract many of us at 1:30PM. Football tickets can be ordered directly from the Athletic Ticket Office (online or 603-676-2466). Ask for the Class of ’62 section. Dartmouth is coming off a 6-4 campaign, (5-2 in the Ivy League) it’s fourth winning season in 15 years.

Saturday evening: Class dinner at Dowd’s, proceeded by cocktails from 6:30- 7:45 PM. Dan Tompkins will arrange our latest junior faculty recipient of the Class of ’62 Fellowship to speak. This has proven to be an enormous hit in past years.

On Sunday we will have brunch at Dowd’s (8:00-11:00), and farewells. We are forced to increase our charges because of the deficit last year. $20/person : Friday night pizza & salad (beer/wine at the bar) $15/person: Saturday tailgating at AD $80/person: Saturday Class dinner $115 total per person

Hard liquor is up to you, but the above fees cover soft drinks, munchies, all meals, tailgating beer & wine, taxes/tips, etc. I know that we can’t always control external events, but let’s be sensitive to the innkeepers’ biggest fear---- last-minute empty rooms. Tami Dowd is trying to reserve the entire Inn for us, and being leaf season, they could fill the Inn many times over. Also, Dowd’s requires a firm headcount for Saturday dinner three weeks in advance, so you will be billed for cancellations within that period. Irwin and I appreciate all assistance and comments to improve the mini reunion and look forward to seeing many of you there. This is the LAST (and only) announcement we’ll have in our Newsletter, so please complete the form below and mail it to Mike Schaefer And, contact either of us any questions, of course: [email protected] cell 413-221-7128 office 413-527-9380

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE- ALAN RAPOPORT

I am writing to you from Oulu, Finland. We are 150 km south of the artic circle and at just about 1 am I can still see well out the window. So the days are long and they are magnificent. It has been a blue, cloudless sky for a few days and the temperature varies between 72 and 80 F which is too hot for the Finns, but they love it. They tend not to have air conditioning or screens on their windows and it gets hot, in and out of the house. The sun rises in the NorthEast and Sets in the NorthWest which is weird. And it starts to color the sky at 2 am. I have been up then watching the World Cup games which often start at 11 am and end at 1 am in Finland, unless there is overtime. The long days of sun with intermittent good rain produces the sweetest, tastiest strawberries and blueberries. The fish and bread are special, as are the people. Some of you know the first lady, Arja, my wife of 48 years. Early on I promised we would visit Finland 1-2 times a year, so I have been back over 50 times. I hope you are each well and keeping active. There are lots of things that don’t look or work perfectly at our age, but most of us sail along and enjoy our lives. I was reading a few columns in the Alumni Magazine from the class of 1935 and a

Page 5: August 2014 ’62 Newsletter 1 ‘62s NEWSdartmouth.imodules.com/s/1353/images/gid7/editor_documents/196… · Rhetoric proj ect, and from Tom Komarek about the Class Birthday Party

few younger ones of that era. It is incredible to see the spunk of those guys who are 95-100 years old and are still enjoying their lives to the fullest. So I want to urge some of you who have never been back for our mini reunion in the fall to do so. This year, like last, it will be over Homecoming with parade, bonfire, a football game, bonding and fun activities. You will have a great time! In this newsletter you will find the dates, cost, activities and be glad to know that rooms are available for a bit longer at Dowd’s Country Inn. So please come back and call for reservations now. I also want even more of you to come to San Diego next spring to our 75th birthday party. Again you can read about it in this edition. Tom Komarek, Roger Usborne, Bags Bergman and others have really planned a great time for us. It is our last birthday party before our 80th so you should each try to come. And for this event it is imperative to book your room soon or you will not get our special group rate. Congratulations to those of you who generously supported our latest class project WARE. We have reached our goal and have given the College over 1.2 million dollars total for 4 classes each year. And once again we will have a great Class of 62 Fellow whom you will hear more about. Of course thank you for supporting the Dartmouth College Fund. You will also read more about our results. Please pay your dues early when you get the first dues request from Charlie Balch as we were close to having the highest percentage participation in paying dues last year and we should make it this year. We are in good financial shape and want to keep it that way. So stay active and healthy and have a great second half of the year. WRITING TUTORING FEEDBACK= ASIA ROWE, ACTING DIRECTOR OF THE WRITING INSTITUTE AT DARTMOUTH On behalf of the RWIT staff-particularly those students receiving awards this year, I would like to thank you for your generous support of our program. Although I have only served as Acting Director for one year, I’m happy to report that RWIT is continuing to thrive and grow. Next year, we will add three grad students to our staff in order to serve our graduate community. Expansion and high morale are a direct result of support such as your. Many thanks, again, to the Class of ’62! Our Class was represented by Bill Baschnagel during the May presentation of our $500 in awards for the top 2013-2014 undergraduate writing tutors. Editor’s note: It is amazing and gratifying to see how much benefit and appreciation comes from this ongoing small gift from our Class. Thanks Bill for your representation.

WARE HITS TARGET The Dartmouth Class of 1962 has now fully funded ’62 Writing & Rhetoric Endowment (WARE)-“a creative, broad-impact gift for the enhanced life-long communication skills of Dartmouth undergraduates, in the words of Alan Rapoport, President of the Class.” Through the exceedingly generous support of 285 classmates in the Dartmouth College Class of 1962 the Writing & Rhetoric Endowment has reached its target of $1.2 million. The large number of classmates contributing to a special project is exceptionally impressive. Every classmate can take pride in this achievement. The endowment will support four classes under the College’s Institute for Writing and Rhetoric. These classes build communication skills in fields that would normally not receive such guidance.

In 2011 then President Kim praised the WARE concept when he said “I can think of nothing more important than building such skills”. WARE promotes reasoned, thoughtful, well written or spoken communication in all disciplines and fields. TESTIMONIALS

The ultimate thanks comes from the beneficiaries themselves, Dartmouth undergraduates. After taking The Art of Science Writing, a WARE course, Charlie Rafkin ’16 reported, “ Since learning more in depth editing techniques, my writing has improved immensely with very little effort. In fact, I received the Rintels Prize nomination for writing in my honors thesis, and a discussion of my research was featured in The Atlantic.”

Another student wrote “ When I saw the fliers around campus for WRITE42: The Art of Science Writing, I immediately thought of my time working in a petroleum chemistry group in Tallahassee this past summer. I spent a good deal of my time in a cubicle den with three other grad students, with a window overlooking an SUV-sized NMR machine in a small airplane hanger. In those close quarters, I did much observing in hopes of better understanding graduate student life. When PetroPhase-an enormous national petroleum research conference-rolled around in July, the grad students spent day after nail-biting day working on their research posters they were going to present. Their fear of writing came through to me very clearly at that point. I did not want to end up like them.” Another student writes: “ Without a doubt, the most meaningful lesson I will take away from WRIT42 this term is a deeper appreciation of the importance of writing as part of a scientific or medical career. I am more confident than ever that, one way or another, writing will feature prominently in my eventual career.” The class owes particular thanks to Charlie Balch: without his dedication, this project would not have succeeded. Well Done Charlie.

He specializes in the role of black holes in star formation. Associate Dean of the Faculty for the Sciences, David Kotz (former Fellow) complimented Hickox’s “innovative teaching ideas…and clarity in presenting complex concepts.” His students find him “engaging and passionate.” One specifically praised Hickox’s ability to teach “astronomy as a whole, and its intricacies, rather than making the course simply an exercise in basic astronomy.” When not stargazing, Hickox has coached rugby and kayaking. The Class of ’62 Faculty Fellowship, a gift to thank the faculty for the quality of classroom experiences remains the only named and endowed fellowship.

PREVIOUS FACULTY FELLOW COMMENTS Ekaterina Pletneva writes: It was a great honor for me to be selected for the Class of 1962 Faculty Fellowship. I was thrilled by the recognition of my students and colleagues, but also, after meeting your classmates, felt even more empowered about the job. It was nice to see that after 50 years you have vivid and loving memories of your time at Dartmouth. I hope that my students will remember stories of their own and some of them may even be about chemistry. I spent my fellowship term here at Dartmouth, working closely with my students in the lab. Having a chance to focus and try many bold experiments helped me to obtain preliminary data for my NIH proposal, which was funded. These experiments and generous federal funding have led us to new directions in our research program. We began then our molecular studies of initial steps in apoptosis (“programmed cell death”), a process instrumental for normal organism development but also associated with cancer and neurodegeneration. Just in the last two years we published eight articles on this subject in top chemistry journals. Importantly, many of these articles had undergraduates as coauthors. Since our meeting, I have become more involved with the Institute of Writing and Rhetoric. I am now a member of the steering committee. I know that many of your classmates greatly value writing and I do too. I am sure that some of my students are now thinking this as they are writing their Chem67 final paper and remembering my “writing drills”. As I hear about your initiatives, I am excited about my Class of 1962 connection. Thanks you for the fantastic opportunity to advance my career and for the chance to experience Dartmouth in new ways. Best wishes to all of you. SANDY APGAR WRITES It is a joy and immensely satisfying to see the ’62 Faculty Fellowship flourishing, both at Dartmouth and beyond. I vividly recall the 20th Reunion planning meeting when we decided to commit both Treasure and Talent, and went on to create what late college president, Dave Mclaughlin, called a “landmark” among alumni gifts that keeps on giving. BILL REEVES WRITES The story about the Writing Project (WARE) brought to mind my freshman English Bible Class taught by Professor Goldberg. We were to write a 500 word essay each week. He announced that he would take off one grade for each error in spelling and punctuation before grading for content. My papers were returned with a red line and an “F” somewhere on the first page. I did learn to proof read, but did not learn how to write.

California Dreamin’ – Our ‘62/75 Celebration

Start California Dreamin’! The Class of ’62 will celebrate our 75th birthdays together in San Diego from Friday, April 17 through Monday, April 20, 2015. We have a great team of Charlie Balch, Dave Bergman, Kent Graham, Tom Komarek, and Roger Usborne planning the event.

We begin our Celebration Friday evening with a dinner cruise in San Diego Bay. Saturday morning, we’ll board trolleys for a city tour with stops at the Cabrillo National Monument, Balboa Park with its museums and world class San Diego Zoo, the Old Town, Gas Lamp District, and other city highlights. You’ll be able to get on and off the trolley system all day to linger where you choose. Saturday evening features a beach party with burgers, dogs, beer, wine, music, and a Pacific sunset. Retired Naval Officer Roger Usborne will host the party at the North Island Naval Air Station with gorgeous views of the Pacific and Point Loma.

After Sunday breakfast together, we’ll head out for a variety of activities. Some will golf. Others will ferry into the city and tour the USS Midway Museum. From there, you can visit other San Diego Embarcadero museums, restaurants, and sights. You can also return early from the city to enjoy our Resort’s heated pool, spa, tennis courts, or walk or bike the nearby waterfront trail. Sunday evening, we’ll celebrate our 75th birthdays with a reception and dinner. The reception will feature music from Bob Yassin who played for us many years ago on campus with the Modern Men. To top off the evening, we’ve invited Dean Thad Seymour to provide after dinner remarks. We’ll close ‘62/75 with a good bye breakfast Monday on the hotel lawn overlooking San Diego Bay (see picture).

The Coronado Island Marriott Resort (CIMR) will be our home base for ‘62/75. We negotiated discounted group rates of $190 a night for resort view rooms and $210 a night for harbor view rooms. As this Newsletter goes to press, 46 classmates have already booked rooms for ‘62/75. We have 14 rooms left at our reduced group rate. The CIMR will also extend our group rate to “early birds” arriving on Thursday, April 16. You can book your room by calling the Marriott at: 1-800-228-9290. Ask for the “Dartmouth Class of 1962 75th Birthday Celebration Rate.” You’ll be asked for a credit card to hold the room; but importantly, as we approach age 75, you can cancel up until the day before arrival without penalty.

The event fee for Dartmouth ‘62/75 will be $550 per person. For those planning to golf on Sunday, there will be an extra $70 fee. Kent Graham is

We applaud your forceful and courageous statement of our College and your vision to improve social norms at Dartmouth College. We are 570 plus strong and still engaged. By now, you know many of the fine accomplishments of the Dartmouth Class of 1962. We need not recount them here. We graduated 52 years ago when Dartmouth was decidedly an all-male college and fraternity life was very important. Most of us were fraternity members. We want you to know that you have our full support. We salute you. You said so forcefully in May as you launched “Moving Dartmouth Forward” “ Enough is enough” We agree. Press on! Meanwhile, life in Rio continues to be a delight. Two passions for me in 2014

1. Writing-“fraternal twin” books in English and Portuguese, title, The Internet in Brazil: Origins, Strategy, Development and Governance published by AuthorHouse.

2. Paddling my new 12’6” race stand-up paddle board. I participated in a

6km race off Leblon and Ipanema beaches on March 16, managing to achieve my goals (finish and not be last), coming in 33rd of 44 participants. Another day, an 8km walk with friends up and down Copacabana Beach. I’m now more famous here for being the oldest SUP competitor than for my work on internet related matters.

Jim Murar: We were in Philly for a week in late June, and I was able to go up to Connecticut and have lunch with Carl and Helen Jaeger, Gordy and Judy Adyelott, & Jim Biggs. Everyone doing pretty well. Also, got a chance to see the Phillies at their ball park with our daughter Mandy and her family. Our other daughter, Lisa, and her family from Northern California spent a week with us prior to our Eastern trip. Saw two more ball games-Angels & Dodgers Disneyland, golf with the guys, shopping for the girls, beach days, miniature golf and a movie. We were worn out. We will be planning to head to Jackson Hole, Montana in August to join Dave and Emmy Walsh and their whole family- 19 of them-for a few days. Lots of fun and laughs in store. David Smith- Visiting Houston on business, I stopped for a day with John Thees and Elyse Taylor (Thees) at their spectacular home by a lake in Magnolia, Texas. John keeps busy with volunteer work at a local charity, sings in local musicals, while Elyse paints as –yet unheralded masterpieces in her studio. Moi? I keep plugging away at a couple of soon-to-be published books and am taking Tai Chi and keyboard jazz improvisation lessons once a week. Elizabeth just completed overseeing a major clinical trial for Intermune, Inc., the results of which caused the stock price to triple overnight. We both continue to enjoy the many cultural amenities-theater, opera, jazz, ballet, symphony-San Francisco has to offer. I’m attempting to coax Ed Hirsch to relocate back to his roots in the Bay Area, so far without success. I’m turning blue holding my breath awaiting a dinner invite from our jefe supremo, Alan Rapoport, who with his wife, Arja, have settled in nearby Palo Alto. Dinner at Chez Smith to welcome the Rapoport’s to the neighborhood. Peter and Zaida Knight were visiting.

August 2014 ’62 Newsletter 16

Marsh (Spider) Potterton- The 75 birthday party looks great. That Coronado is awesome. We had three nice weeks on Sanibel with only one rainy day. I had cataracts removed from my right eye yesterday. Left eye in a few weeks. Due to an arthritic left hip, bone on bone, there is a new hip in my future. Heading over to Michigan next week for salmon. We are off to London on May 27th for a National Geographic tour of the 70th anniversary of D Day, a dream trip for me. We are selling our place in Jackson Hole, five years was enough for us. We will take the same three weeks in/on Sanibel every winter. Cheers, The Spider. John Thees & Elyse Taylor Thees- Got away from the Texas heat recently, and made a mooch tour of everyone they knew in Colorado or other states on the way. They visited us for a few days, fun and laughs. They must have liked it so much that they are going to rent a place near Vail next summer for a few months. It will be great to have them close.
