Upright and narrowly oval in form, its lower branches grow in a tightly columnar fashion before flaring out above pedestrian and vehicle traf- fic to create a shady canopy for city streets and walkways. Mature height is about 40 feet, with a spread of about 20 feet. Derived from a Maine seed source, it is reliably hardy through USDA Zone 4 and is also resistant to potato leafhopper. Somerset Maple (Acer rubrum ‘Somerset’) sports glossy green leaves that glow with long-lasting, bright red fall color in autumn. It branches very well as a young tree while developing a uniform, symmetrical and upright oval form at maturity. A seedless male clone, the 1994 U. S. National Arboretum release has proven adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. The result of controlled crosses between October Glory® and Autumn Flame® Maples it colors well as far south as Georgia and is gaining favor from growers in warmer Southern climates. Hardy through USDA Zone 4, it reaches a mature height of 45 feet and spread of 35 feet.

Seedless Red Maple cultivars are superior performers

New World Maple (Acer rubrum ‘New World’) leaves glow orange to orange-red in the fall. Summer foliage of this seed-less selection is dark green and glossy. Upright and narrowly oval in form, its lower branches grow in a tightly columnar fashion before flaring out above pedestrian and vehicle traf-fic to create a shady canopy for city streets and walkways. Mature height is about 40 feet, with a spread of about 20 feet.

Derived from a Maine seed source, it is reliably hardy through USDA Zone 4 and is also resistant to potato leafhopper. This handsome tree was introduced by the US National Arboretum as one of the best overall performers in a group of 3,500 red maples grown from seed collected throughout the species’ native range in Eastern and Central North America.
