Topic - Accessing Capital in Today’s Marketplace - The Cheese Has Moved

Sponsored by University of Central Missouri-Summit Campus/SBTDC

For most small businesses, today’s ever-changing environment in the financial market place is confusing, frustrating and a downright nightmare. Banks are under increasing scrutiny by regulators, and their shareholders are demanding continued solid returns. This session features two of the top experts in small-to medium-sized business lending in the region, Rick Viar, President and Pat Case, Vice President of

Commercial Lending, both with Summit Bank of Kansas City. They will explain the new environment that both lender and borrower find themselves in, focusing on how far the cheese has moved and the proactive approaches businesses need to take to position themselves for achieving their financial and business goals and objectives.

The University of Kansas Cancer Center and Kansas City Cancer Center (KCCC) announced today they will combine operations, creating an outpatient cancer care organization. The partnership will expand opportunities for advanced cancer research, Phase I clinical research trials and supports the efforts of National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation. Current and future patients will have greater access to 50 hematologists, oncologists and radiation oncologists at 12 locations, offering the most comprehensive cancer care in the region.

This partnership will unite two premier cancer centers, combining the area’s leading community-based oncology program with the area’s premier academic medical center to create an unprecedented approach to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship for patients in this region and a national model for cancer care delivery.

Just as The University of Kansas Cancer Center will continue serving patients through its multi-disciplinary approach in an academic medical center setting, Kansas City Cancer Center will have

the same group of physicians and medical staff available to their patients at the same community-based locations and community hospitals where they currently serve patients.

Kansas City Cancer Center and The University of Kansas Cancer Center have collaborated on cancer care previously. In 2007, they combined their blood and marrow transplant program into The University of Kansas Cancer Center. Through this collaboration, patients from across the region have benefitted from remarkable clinical outcomes.

Wayne Burch, Lee’s Summit Farm Bureau Insurance agent, was recently presented the Missouri Farm Bureau Insurance Services President’s All American Award. This award recognizes agents who excel in all lines of business.

Burch was only one of four agents in the

company qualifying for the award this year. Blake Hurst, president of Missouri Farm Bureau, made the presentation during the company’s All Star Sales Conference in March. In addition, Burch was recognized as a 2011 Premiere Agent. He was also a member of the New Horizon Pyramid.

The Lee’s Summit R-7 School District is looking for area businesses who hire high school students and/or recent graduates to consider using a recently developed employability transcript as part of their hiring practices.

The employability transcript is designed to help high school students compete for jobs, apply for scholarships and prepare for the transition from school to career. If interested in learning more about

this new transcript, contact the Career Education Office at 986-1012.

To date nine businesses have agreed to utilize this innovative approach to screening high school applicants. For a listing of participating businesses and other information about employability transcripts, go to http://myconnections.leesummit.k12.mo.us/myfuture.htm.

The new program was developed as part

of the district’s emphasis on ensuring college and career readiness. The employability transcripts emphasize career preparedness through selection of an area of focus, dependability through record of attendance in school, career readiness based onacademic skills through ACT WorkKeys scores, supervised internship programs, and technical skill attainment through national certifications.

Chamber 101: Get Plugged In is geared toward new members, new representatives and current members that have not yet plugged into the Chamber or would like a refresher on how to do so. The first event was a great success with both new and current members learning of the programs and benefits the Chamber provides. The first 30 minutes of the event consists of an orientation where veteran members discuss benefits of membership, tips on getting the most bang for your buck, and Chamber educational programs.

The remaining hour allows those attending to peruse new member showcase tables to see what products and services they offer. At this time, we also invite veteran members to join the group for networking, group introductions and a reception.

Make sure to check out the next Chamber 101: Get Plugged In on April 7, 3:30–5 p.m. at Metcalf Bank, 609 NE 291 Highway. Register online at www.lschamber.com under the Calendar of Events tab.

Earth Day is April 22“Earth Day” is a nationally-recognized day scheduled on April 22 each year to promote conservation and raise awareness for the responsible use of the Earth’s resources.

In an effort to support Earth Day, the City of Lee’s Summit, in partnership with the Lee’s Summit Beautification Commission and the Lee’s Summit Parks Department, host an annual “Sweep the Summit” event where volunteers of all ages are invited to join in collecting litter from a local park to help keep our community clean and beautiful. When the event is held at a park that is adjacent to a stream, volunteers can choose to collect debris from the stream as well as the park.

This year, the event will be held at Howard Park, 3498 NE Independence, on April 16 from 10 a.m.–noon.

The City and the Chamber encourage YOU to get involved and host your own Earth Day event with your family, church, or other civic group. Ideas include:

• Adopt-A-Street (The City has designated sections of city streets that groups can register to clean up on a quarterly basis)

• Stream Team

• Neighborhood Cleanup

• Install trees or native plants

• Develop/install a community garden

• Begin a recycling program at home, church, etc.

• Begin a ‘reuse’ program at home, church, etc.

If you need help with ideas or have questions, feel free to contact the City’s Environmental Programs Coordinator, Kara Taylor, at 969-1804.

You may have noticed over the past nine months that the Chamber’s Director of Communications, Gina Seibel, had been expecting a baby.

On March 4 at 1:51 p.m. Gina and her husband Jeff welcomed their baby boy Augustas Reed Seibel to the world.

Augustas, Auggie or Gus (pick your favorite) weighed 8 lbs 6 oz and was 18 inches long.

The new family is doing great, and they are having lots of fun.

Gina will return to work on Friday, April 15 and will no doubt have lots of photos. She has been sending the Chamber staff photos on a daily basis and we have enjoyed some visits as well.
