    Greetings in Jesus name,

The first Sunday in April not only marks thefirst of the month but it also marks the begin-ning of Holy Week. Holy Week is a very inter-esting time in the life of the church, and thefaithful. We start the week with the excite-ment of Palm Sunday and Jesus triumphal en-

try into Jerusalem. Our excitement is quicklydashed as we enter the somberness of the LastSupper and His arrest on Maundy Thursday. We then experience the defeat of Good Fridayand the crucifixion. Our defeat is then re-moved as we celebrate the empty tomb andthe Easter freedom.

This week carries with it a lot of emotion,

and/or passion. In fact Jesus suffering is alsoknown as Christs Passion, or the Passion ofthe Christ. Many say his suffering was his pas-sion for us, that he died for us. AuthorRobin Myers, in his book Saving Jesus from theChurch, gives us a different insight to what Je-sus passion really may have been. Myers says,We are accustomed to hearing the death ofJesus and events leading up to it as his

passion, and we assume this refers only tosuffering. But it is more accurate to say thathis passion had to do with the revelation ofGod that consumed him. Justice was his pas-sion. Healing was his passion. Gathering upthe last, the least, and the lost and helpingthem stand up straight in a world that keptthem permanently bent over was his passion.

After reading this I had to think, if this was

Jesus passion then shouldnt it be mine?! Aswe enter Holy Week and then celebrate thegift of Easter, lets remember and be faithful toJesus passion and think about what our pas-sion will be in the light of Jesus life andEaster.

    Lets be passionate,

    Thank You

This thank you and token of my appreciation is long overdue. A few months ago, there was suspicion of awater leak in my house. Since there was no visible evidence in the house, I called Joe Tyler to see if hecould help me figure it out. Low and behold, it was determined the leak was under the slab. Joe went waybeyond the call of duty, found the appropriate company with expertise in this problem and spent the timeto not only supervise them in finding the culprit, but through the repairs. Joe will never really know howmuch I appreciate his involvement in my problem with finding the proper plumbing company and supervis-ing the repairs. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much. Your and Jeannies friendship means the worldto me.Maria Madigan

    Earth MattersLucy Beebe Tobias

Congratulations to us, that would be you and me here at Fort King Presbyterian! The

session voted last month to have our congregation be an Earth Care Congregation. Our application, including having enough points to be certified, has been sent to theSocial Justice and Peacemaking Unit of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and has justbeen approved.

What does it mean to be earth care green? It means we are thoughtful and mindful ofearth care in all our actions. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint andwalk lightly on terra firma.

At church, it means perhaps planting trees when a child is baptized, changing how we use our utilities and

searching for opportunities in our community to bring peace and justice as God's stewards of this earth. Here is the Earth Care Pledge we signed:Peace and justice is God's plan for all creation. The earth and all creation are God's. God calls us to be careful, humble stewards of this earth, and to protect and restore it for its own sake, and for the future use and enjoy-ment of the human family. As God offers all people the special gift of peace through Jesus Christ, and throughChrist reconciles all to God, we are called to deal justly with one another and the earth.

    1. Our worship and discipleship will celebrate God's grace and glory in creation and declare that God calls usto cherish, protect and restore this earth.2. In education, we will seek learning and teaching opportunities to know and understand the threats to God'screation and the damage already inflicted. We will encourage and support each other in finding ways of keeping

and healing the creation in response to God's call to earth-keeping, justice and community.3. Our facilities will be managed, maintained and upgraded in a manner that respects and cherishes all crea-tion, human and non-human, while meeting equitably the needs of all people. In our buildings and on ourgrounds we will use energy efficiently, conserve resources, and share what we have in abundance so that God'sholy creation will be sustainable for all life and future generations. Our outreach will encourage public policy and community involvement that protects and restores the vulner-able and degraded earth as well as oppressed and neglected people. We will be mindful that our personal andcollective actions can positively or negatively affect our neighborhood, region, nation and world. We will seek toachieve environmental justice through coalitions and ecumenical partnerships.

To Your HealthChosen by Bonnie Schulze, Health Ministry

Have questions about your prescriptions? Your pharmacist is there to help. When your doctor prescribes anew medication, it is important to ask questions before filling your prescription.

What is the name of the medicine? What is it supposed to do?

Is this the brand or generic name? Is there a generic version available?

When do I take the medicine, and for how long?

Should I take it on an empty stomach or with food?

What should I do if I forget a dose?

What foods, drinks, medicines, dietary supplements or activities should I avoid while takingthis medicine?

What are the possible side effects, and what do I do if they occur?

When should I expect the medicine to begin to work, and how will I know it is working?

Will this new prescription work safely with the other prescriptions and non-prescriptionmedicines I am taking?

How should I store this medicine?Want more information on prescription medications? Visit www.HealthSmart.com. Information from HealthSmart October 2009.

One suggestion is to take the drug information sheets given to you at the Pharmacy and place them in a 3ring notebook so all the information about medications you are taking will be in one place. You might divideinto sections with current medications in the front and previously taken medicines in the back. When going to a new doctor bring the book along so he/she can see your medication history.First Published in September 2010 Link

    About Our Instructors

Rabbi Tom, as he is affectionately known, decided at the age of 18 to prepare for ministryin the Presbyterian Church and began teaching himself Hellenistic Greek. Totally on hisown, he worked his way through college and seminary. With a facility for language, helearned biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac and Coptic. He has a great passion for understand-ing accurately the histories of both the Jewish and Christian peoples, their interpretation oflife and events in their own time.

    Church Flowers 2012

If you are considering providing flowers sometime for a worship service, but would like to know more about theprocess, I hope the following information will be helpful to you.

    1. The flowers do not need to be purchased from or delivered by a florist. If you bring them from your yardor buy them from a supermarket, they just need to be in a vase, (or container of your choice) ready to dis-play. Please see #4 and #5 below.

    2. There is no minimum or maximum size requirement for the flower arrangement.3. The flowers are yours to take after the Sunday service. If you prefer to leave them, they will be used for

smaller arrangements to be delivered to hospitalized or homebound members. If you decide to keep theflowers, or give them to someone of your choice, etc. that is fine also.

    4. If you leave the flowers, but would like your container returned to you, we will make sure it is returned.5. We also have loaner vases you are welcome to use.

I will be glad to answer any questions you might have, help with wording for the worship bulletin, etc. Thankyou very much. Nancy Hall 694-3221.

    Something to Think AboutJesus Cross-Exaltation

    To Be Lifted Up

John 20:11-29I. The life and death of an insignificant Jewish peasant,Jesus of Nazareth, meant little or nothing to Imprial Roman authorities. Indeed, King of the Jews on the Cross of Jesus (John 19:22-23) was intended to expresarcasm by Pilate to the Jews: Heres what we have the power to do to you, any of you, if you oppose our powand our agenda! This moment, when-it-happens, we are terrified of and helpless before such human power over our lives. Imprial Rome has slaughtered countless people again and again, has conquered and crushed both body and humspirit with impunity, on the authority of a Caesar, a god of Rome! As Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus = Cligula(37-41CE) said to Philo of Alexandria in 40 C.E., You do not sacrifice to your god for me; you sacrificeme! The power of Caesar was awesomely absolute, the power of a god!

The author of the Fourth Gospel (traditionally called John) is very precise in his message about Jesus of Naareth: the ignominious death of Jesus on the Cross did indeed occur in history; it is an historical event. Tmeaning of that event, however, goes beyond the boundaries of what we think we see and think we experience.

Jesus being lifted up (John 3:14 et al.) means for John being crucified and being exalted, raised, at the samtime; it is one event. For Jesus to be crucified means at that same moment to be exalted, raised up (this is tmeaning in the Greek text, which is missed in English translation). What does this mean for us?

Jesus Cross/Exaltation is pointing beyond the historical event of the Cross on to the very edge, the boundary,

history, to the limits of our own ability to see a new reality. The lifting up of Jesus is pointing at the very powof Life of which God is the source, to go beyond our perceptions, our thoughts, our feelings we have at this mment, to look at a new reality on the horizons of history. The life God has given all of us is affirmed by the liftiup of Jesus on the Cross, in spite of, indeed through, the cold chilling crucifixion of Jesus, the Man. There is moto life than the presumed power of an Empire or a Caesar. Or, again, present hard-realities do not determine tfuture of human life; if they appear to do so, were not paying attention.

An immediate implication of Jesus lifting-up is this:- God is not a static Prime Mover or Existent Abstract Being up-there.- God is life, the source and very core of our lives and of all life around us.

The creation stories in Genesis 1, 2 make it clear that God is the source and sustainer of all life; God is t

ground of our own being. (See J.S. Spong 2001A New Christianity for a New World 240). Our hope is not bason what we think we can do, but on God who is the very source of life and the unexpected!

II. The appearances of Jesus to his followers in the Fourth Gospel have one specific intention (we may to use the text differently, but John is quite clear):

    A. Mary (a woman! Can you imagine?) had gone to the tomb; someone asked her why she was cring (John 20:13). She did not recognize Jesus(John 20:14, a theme also in Luke 24:16) until he addressher:Mariam = Mary. She heard Jesus and responded: Rabbonei; in the language of Jesus, Aramaic, tmeans precisely: My Lord/Master (M. Jastrow 1950A Dictionary of the Tarqumim et al. II 1440; G. Dman 1929Jesus-Jeshua 13).

    B. Thomas most unexpected real encounter with Jesus challenged his own expectations: Unlessee in his hands the print of the nails and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand his side, I will not believe (John 20:25). Aha! Realistic demands! And when confronted, his demanbecame so much verbiage; we hear instead: My Lord and my God!

Exactly what is the point? Just this:Jesus has established human contact with his followers in order for them to become participants in twork Jesus began!

To receive the holy spirit, i.e. the spirit of Jesus of Nazareth, means precisely to engage in Jesus work not onof countering the Imperial power of a Caesar or a culture, but to understand that an ignominious death in tprocess of countering that power is not the end! It is a lifting up, an exaltation; its just the beginning. Lifwill respond in its own time and manner, and wed better be prepared for surprises.

This clearly goes beyond beliefin doctrines, dogmas, rituals; to be a follower of Jesus of Nazareth means to egage in, to actively participate in, what he began. To be able to do that with clarity, we must listen to Jesus Nazareth.

Rabbonei! This is my confession to you.

    Shalom,

    Tom
