AT FARMINGDALE LANESUSBC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS KICKS OFF IN RENO By Matt Cannizzaro - USBC

RENO, Nev. - The 2013 United

States Bowling Congress

Women's Championships got

underway at the newly-trans-

formed Reno-Sparks Convention

Center as the first of more than

4,200 teams took the lanes last

week.

The 94th edition of the world's

largest participatory sporting

event for women made its record

eighth trip to Reno as bowling

fans and local dignitaries cheered

on the opening squad that featured

30 teams. It's the first time the

USBC Women's Championships

has been held at the RSCC and the

first time a bowling event has been

held at the venue since the 1990

USBC Open Championships.

The 81-day event, which will

conclude July 1, kicked off with a

ribbon cutting featuring USBC

Executive Director Stu Upson,

USBC Board Member Marci

Williams and Reno-Sparks

Convention and Visitors Authority

Board Chairman and Washoe

County Commissioner for District

2 David Humke, the ceremonial

first ball and the traditional Mass

Ball Shot.

Paulette Moore of Pasadena,

Calif., was chosen to roll the cere-

monial first ball, and the right-

hander knocked down nine pins to

mark the official start of the 2013

event.

"Everybody was looking at me,

and I didn't want to throw it in the

gutter," said Moore, who made her

ninth Women's Championships

appearance. "I just went out there

and released it. I had a good time

and enjoyed myself."

The RSCC was transformed

from an empty room into a 44-lane

state-of-the-art facility in approxi-

mately eight weeks. The conven-

tion-center setting, which debuted

at the Women's Championships at

the 2010 event in El Paso, Texas,

features the world's largest mobile

scoreboard and a unique vendor

area with shops, concession area

and pro shop.

Carolynn Mikkelson of Sparks,

Nev., looks forward to the start of

the Women's Championships

every year and has participated in

the opening-day festivities for the

past several years.

"We really enjoy bowling on

opening night," Mikkelson said.

"We've been doing it for a while

now, and it's enjoyable. You have

the entertainment, and it's nice.

The convention-center setting is

getting even nicer."

With both the Open and

Women's Championships visiting

the same host city in the same year

for the first time, more than

75,000 bowlers will make their

way to the Biggest Little City in

the World, and the city is expected

to see an economic impact of more

than $150 million. The Open

Championships, which is taking

place at the National Bowling

Stadium this year, began its 125-

day run March 1 and will conclude

July 7.

"Today, our female bowlers took

center stage in Reno," said USBC

Managing Director of

Tournaments Brian Lewis. "Our

Women's Championships com-

petitors have a fantastic facility for

this year's tournament, and our

staff, along with the city of Reno,

is excited to begin welcoming

each and every one of them."

ARLINGTON, Texas - United

States Bowling Congress presi-

dent Andrew Cain of Phoenix has

been re-elected by the Athletes

Advisory Council to continue to

serve on the USBC Board of

Directors, and he will be joined on

the board by three-time Team

USA member Mike Fagan of

Dallas.

Both Cain, whose current term

was set to expire at the end of this

season, and Fagan will begin their

three-year terms on the board

starting Aug. 1, 2013. Fagan

replaces Wendy Macpherson, who

did not seek re-election. Athletes

who have been Team USA mem-

bers in the last 10 years are eligi-

ble to vote to determine athlete

representatives to the board.

Cain, 31, originally was named

USBC president in January 2012,

and was re-elected by the board in

June 2012. A three-time member

of Team USA, he joined the board

in 2007.

"I am excited to have been elect-

ed to another term on the USBC

Board," Cain said. "USBC cur-

rently is at a crossroads in its his-

tory as we endeavor to foster and

support our great sport of bowling.

If we remain steadfast in gover-

nance, bold and unafraid in

approach, and continue develop-

ing open communication with our

industry partners, I am confident

we will evolve in a way that cre-

ates positive change for the better-

ment of our sport and all who play

it. Change can be challenging, but

our will to chart a new course pro-

vides us with an incredible oppor-

tunity for success."

Fagan, 32, has been a

Professional Bowlers Association

Tour member since 2002. He has

won four PBA Tour titles, includ-

ing the 2012 USBC Masters, and

also has five titles on the European

Tour. A three-time Team USA

member, he won team gold, silver

in trios and bronze in singles at the

2011 PABCON Championships.

"I certainly feel honored to be a

part of the board," Fagan said. "It

is nice to think that other players

would want me to represent their

interests. I look forward to repre-

senting the athletes like myself,

and doing what I can to better the

sport for the present and future

top-level players."

Fagan said as a board member

he will be able to gain a new per-

spective that he hopes will give

him a better view of the bowling

industry.

"I certainly want to see progress

in our sport, but I also know there

is more to the sport than profes-

sional bowling and Team USA,"

Fagan said. "Learning more about

each pocket of the industry will

allow me to be a more informed

board member."
