Please send submissions for the April magazine by Sunday 15 March to [email protected] or phone the editor

From the Editor....The good news is that we have a Five Alive Printing and Delivery Manager. Mick (Michael) Neilan of Fladbury has agreed to be our link with the printers. Thank you Mick! Mick has already been in touch with them who, as I write, are fully functioning. If there are any queries about printing and delivery, please contact Mick on telephone 01386 861905 or email [email protected]

The bad news is that some of the events mentioned in this month’s magazine may not happen because of Coronavirus. New information is received and decisions are made, locally and nationally, on a daily basis so many things may have changed after we have gone to press. If anyone is unsure of what is happening, please ring people listed on the inside of the front cover, including me on 860531, who will try and put you in the right direction.

The deadline for the May Five Alive is Wednesday 15 April and the editor is Lynne Cameron. Please email articles and information to [email protected] or phone Lynne on 07785 571332. She will welcome short interesting articles about living in isolation, tips for survival, suggestions for solo games or a joke or too.

We welcome comments, suggestions and offers of help in producing the Five Alive. Please contact Lynne by phone or email [email protected] or me by phone or email [email protected]

Finally, at this difficult time, I thank all the contributors, the compiler John Grove of Cropthorne, the printers in Willersey and the deliverers around our villages. We hope you, the readers, find it helpful and enjoyable. Love Jane X

From The Rectory

It happened,

At the dawning of a new day in the quiet of a garden,

On a mountain in Galilee,

As they sat at table,

On a walk in the country,

Sharing an evening meal,

By the sea shore at daybreak,

The Risen Christ appeared to them,

the solitary woman,

a few friends,

eleven disciples,

And he said, “Do not be afraid”, “Believe, it is I – your friend”, “Peace be with

you”.

Staggering isn’t it? Jesus appears in such everyday places; the sort of places you

and I know, and I hope you have the occasion to enjoy – a talk over a kitchen

table, a meal with friends, dawn breaking in on a garden, a trip to the sea or

mountains. In some ways nothing very special at all, except that Jesus will be

there with us, whether we are part of a crowd or on our own. He is wanting us

to hear him say “Believe, it is I, your friend – things have changed because I live

– let me show you”.

Jesus came to the them on that first Easter with Good News. He brought words

of hope and, by his presence he showed them how “his” life, death and

resurrection changed things for ever. He told them to share this Good News,

and by “their” lives to bring new hope and change to the world around them.

The Risen Christ still meets us in all places today. He comes with the same

greeting as he gave everyone that first Easter “Believe, it is I – your friend. Peace

be with you”. He brings the same invitation “Let me show you how when you

trust and follow me, “your” life and the world will change”, and he gives us the

same commission “Go, and tell others that I live”.

May every blessing of Easter hope, joy and peace be with you.

Sarah

Dusty Old Book -Take a Look!

Recently I read the Nasa report on climate change. It says climate change is proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia. Gasses, such as carbon dioxide and methane contribute to the greenhouse effect resulting

in oceans warming, glaciers melting, sea levels rising, ocean acidification and global temperature rise.

Climate change is affecting all people in the world, biblical proportions of rainfall

has impacted on us locally and across the country. Families have been rescued from flooded houses, animals moved from grazing fields and farmland devastated by water.

Coronavirus is nearly at pandemic stage. Shelves in supermarkets are emptying, especially of toilet paper. Football games are suspended, schools, colleges and universities are under threat of closure and hospitals are preparing for large intakes

of patients.

Well, in the midst of all this I had to smile because recently I read an article that said the Bible was stuck in history and had nothing to say in today’s world,

especially about climate change. To be fair climate change wasn’t an issue in the Iron Age or even when the New Testament was written 2000 years ago. Well, that maybe is true, but the truth of it is, is the Bible has a lot to say. God spoke words of wisdom back then and those words are just as important today. Throughout

the Bible God shows us just how much He cares for all He created, humankind, animals, land and the environment. God tells us to look after the trees and not to cut them down (Dt 20:19, 21:19), to care for his land, look after his animals, and

He tells us to eat more green plants (Genesis 1:11-13, 29-30) (This would cut down on methane emissions).

As I write this every news channel on TV gives updates on coronavirus. I listen and

watch as we are told how we should wash our hands thoroughly. In schools small children are being taught to sing ‘happy birthday to you’ twice over when they wash their hands, and I smile, because washing our hands thoroughly is not new,

the Bible (stuck back in history) quite clearly tells us how important it is to wash our hands regularly (Mk 7:3-4).

And so, in these difficult and challenging times if we took a moment to open the

Bible ‘that has nothing to say’ to us today, we will discover that God is our helper, our comforter and our faithful friend, and He most certainly has a lot to say to us today to help us to ‘wash our hands’ and care for His good creation and one

another. Sue Hiscocks (Reader in training).

Diocesan“Open Conversations about the Future of our Church”

In December I wrote of Bishop John’s invitation to join an “Open Conversation” about the Future of our Church. Well, over 1,000 people did! The very large numbers required us to at times have parallel events in different venues. Over 5,000 pieces of input during the conversations and 2,000 comments afterwards have been noted. You can read a summary of the feedback on the Diocesan website - https://www.cofe-worcester.org.uk/open-conversations-feedback The feedback is grouped in themes; ministry, the role of clergy, church leadership (voluntary and paid), church buildings, Church for under 40’s, and how we pay for ministry (the local vicar).

The follow-up conversations planned for April and May have been suspended due to Covid 19. At the time of writing, we wait for the Diocese to advise when and how we can engage with the next stage of conversations.Sarah

The Church locallyConversations are taking place in the Five Alive Parish and in the benefices with which we are associated about what are healthy and sustainable churches for the future (with less clergy).

We had intended to explain our thinking this far and invite comment at the APCM which had been scheduled for Sunday 26th April. The APCM has been suspended until further notice due to Covid 19. Sarah

Plough Sunday – 12 January

All generations gathered!Over 40 people gathered at St Michael’s for what has become a tradition in the local church’s year, Plough Sunday. We were delighted to welcome the youngest generation to one of our local farming families – a baby boy just a few weeks old! We also welcomed friends from beyond the Five Alive Parish, and of course Margaret Herbert who spoke on behalf of Farming Community Network.

Margaret spoke of situations farmers and their families and the wider farming community sometimes come across, and where FCN can offer support. A collection from the service raised £501 to support this work.

Thank you to everyone who supported this evening, including the superb Plough Supper.

Christian Aid WeekMany people will be aware that it is Christian Aid Week in May. There will not be house-house envelopes this year but the needs of people in poor countries are greater than ever, including coping with Coronavirus. Ways of helping will be published in the May Five Alive.

Dog poo seems to be on the increase, both on footpaths and green areas where people walk. Dog owners are required to put their dog poo in plastic bags and then put the bags in dog poo bins or refuse bins at home.

CROPTHORNE PARISH COUNCILCommunity Speed Watch - After many, many months of debate, pressure and communication, Cropthorne has finally been accepted onto the Community Speed Watch scheme - where we need a team of volunteers who are willing to participate - this would involve a few hours (on a rota ) who monitor the traffic speed at stipulated locations. Ideally I would be looking for about 10 volunteers to spread the commitment elementDefibrillator / CPRE Training - Is there anyone who would be interested in defib / CPR training if the parish council was to arrange something - please email if you are interested and whether you would prefer a weekend or evening session. In addition, is there anyone, maybe retired, who is regularly out and about, who would be happy to take on the responsibility of checking the defibs - once a week / or fortnight - just to ensure that all is working ok etc - and just a little entry in a record book

News from the Bell Towers

The Fladbury and Cropthorne Tower Bell ringers have been asked to organise bands to ring at 6 weddings this year together with ringing at both the Cropthorne and Fladbury Walkabouts, for St.George's Day and the VE celebrations in addition to ringing regularly for Sunday services. A peal attempt has been booked made by the Vale of Evesham Ringing Society on Tuesday 14th April and we will be hosting a number of visiting bands at both towers during this year. BUT unfortunately bellringing has been cancelled for the time being.Visiting ringers and new potential ringers are always welcome to make contact with us and normally our practice evenings are on Mondays evenings alternatively at Fladbury and Cropthorne.

For more information please contact either Patrick Palmer on 01386 860492 or Rob Sadler on 01386 860723.

Upon a Ring of Bells

Bells have wide mouths and tongues, but are too weak,

Have they not help, to ring or talk or speak,

But if you move them they will mak't appear,

By speaking they'll make all the town to hear.

When Ringers handle them with art and skill,

They then the ears of their observers fill,

With such brave notes, they ring and tang so well,

As to outstrip all with their ding, dong, Bell.

John Bunyan, 1686.

FLADBURY WALKERSTravelling the B4084 close to Haselor Lane, few would be aware of a

secluded footpath disappearing into a small coppice. Whilst much of the County lay under flood, this was the route that took us onto Haselor Hill,

on a rare bracing sunny day in February, sandwiched between storm Dennis and storm Jorge. Negotiating lots of mud and waterlogged ground,

the group were rewarded with crystal clear views of surrounding hills dusted with snow, including the distant Titterstone Clee in Shropshire. As we continued along the ridge, we were spotted by a pair of roe deer, who,

unhappy about our presence, took flight over a fence into the adjacent field. Feeling greatly invigorated, we arrived at The Bell where we enjoyed

lunch before returning to Cropthorne village hall.

Further rambles are suspended until further notice

Cropthorne Community GroupAnyone who can assist residents in Cropthorne who are having to isolate due to Covid-19 can use this form to pass on their details. Simply fill it in and tick the boxes that apply to the services you are willing to offer then post it through the doors on your street. This will be a great help for anyone who is suffering from the symptoms of the virus and also for those who are in the vulnerable group and being told to stay indoors. Ideally everyone in the village will have at least 2 local contacts they can contact if they need any help.

I will try to keep a stock of the forms in the porch of the church or you can print off copies by joining the 'Cropthorne Community Group' Facebook page.

If you have any questions about the forms then please contact me on 07740 467077 or [email protected]

Your Village Hall Needs You!!

Cropthorne & Charlton Village Hall and Playing Fields are managed by a very small committee of volunteers whose aim is maintain and run the facilities for the benefit of local people.

As well as providing a venue for a wide range of activities, which are open to all residents, we like to hold social events, but this can only happen if there are enough volunteers to help.

We are very much in need of pro-active members from all walks of life who live in either Cropthorne or Charlton. All we ask is that you attend up to 10 monthly meetings a year and get involved.

If you would like to contribute to village life and have a say in how the hall is run, please contact Jacqui King at [email protected]."

A message from Fladbury Paddle Club.....Hope you are all keeping well. As things stand at the moment, we are keeping access to the river open as there are obvious benefits to exercise and being outdoors. Many of you may welcome the opportunity to take the family out on the water or meet with friends at a safe distance.

Obviously, we are trusting everyone to follow government guidance, particular-ly keeping distance from others when at the club. Each of you will know your own health and circumstances best and whether you fall into one of the vul-nerable groups.

We are putting in place a number of measures, including no access to the club-house and gym and controlling use of the equipment. Non members living in the wider parish are welcome but MUST contact me or Steve ([email protected]) first so that we can make people aware of all the meas-ures and keep control over numbers at the club at any one time.

Hopefully, we'll all be able to keep in touch, even at a distance.

Take care, Andy TrainEmail: [email protected]

Fladbury We AlertWest Mercia Neighbourhood Watch have introduced the We Alert app for anyone who possesses a smartphone or IPad. This enables registered members to contact each other in real time with regards to a given incident rather than picking up information on a second hand basis.

Unlike a WhatsApp group your mobile number is not displayed, and when sending out an alert to other members you have the option to remain anonymous. There are over 80 registered members of Fladbury We Alert. The more members then the more effective it becomes as a mode of communication.

Reading the Bible afresh.....

On “Songs of Praise” on Sunday 1st March it was suggested that Lent might be a good time to read the Bible afresh. I was very impressed by an item about reading it, or hearing it read by David Suchet, in small portions. Introduced from Holy Trinity, Brompton in London, there is an app. entitled “Bible in One Year”, which can be downloaded to your smartphone or ipad, produced by Alpha International, and which provides amazing audio & written commentary, with over one million users worldwide.

Five Alive ChurchFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/FiveAliveParish

Website - http://five-alive.co.uk

On the 17th March, Archbishops Justin and Sentamu made the difficult decision to suspend all public acts of worship because of Coronavirus, but, in their words “this does not mean the Church of England has shut up shop”. Our five church buildings will be open for personal prayer and quiet reflection. They can be places of peace when so much around us feels strange and unsettled. Please feel welcome to write your prayer requests in either the prayer request book or add them to the prayer tree in the churches. I intend to say Morning Prayer in each one of our five churches each week. I shall be pleased to include your prayer with mine. I know that others will pray regularly in a church too.

I want to encourage as many of you as possible though, to pray at the same time each Sunday (at 5.00pm) using a simple, short form of service which we will provide weekly, either by email or through your letter box. It will have the Gospel reading for the Sunday printed, a short “thought” to reflect on, and prayers. If possible, light a candle while you pray as a visible symbol of Jesus being present with you. We remember we all belong to God’s big family even if, for a time, our praise and prayer is expressed on our own. If 5.00pm is not convenient for you, I still encourage you to make some time on a Sunday to be a part of “The Five Alive Praying Together on a Sunday”.

Please let Carole Oliver know if you would like to receive the Sunday prayer sheet each week - preferably email Carole [email protected]; or phone 860389. Please ask friends and neighbours if they would like to “Pray Together on Sunday” and, if they do, to let Carole know.

We are in early days of preparing ourselves for a different lifestyle over these coming weeks. The Church is going to look very different in the days ahead but be assured “the Church is open” and the Holy Spirit is active in many people across our nation. The Church of England is busy developing resources, some of which you can already find at https://www.churchofengland.org/more/media-centre/coronavirus-covid-19-liturgy-and-prayer-resources

Locally, the Pastoral Care Team continues to offer the pastoral support we can and we are actively involved with others across the villages to offer support. These are uncertain and testing times, with pain and anxiety for everyone. I am praying for you.

God of compassion,

be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation.

In their loneliness, be their consolation;

in their anxiety, be their hope;

in their darkness, be their light;

through him who suffered alone on the cross,

but reigns with you in glory,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Every Blessing

Sarah

Wyre Piddle - Wendy BerryThe 11th March meeting at the Village Hall featured Karen Owens who is a jeweller and has been making

beaded bracelets for many years and running workshops for over three.

At our workshop, all participants produced a bracelet

from scratch using just safety pins and beads. Each participant chose their own colours and the results were excellent. It showed we all have our creative side. Maggie also showed off the fluid art paintings which her craft group had produced.

Fladbury & Moor - Jacky Easter

Phew! We made it to our 90th birthday, and enjoyed the celebration in the company of our sister WIs and special guest Sue Stone, our Federation Chairman.

Our speaker, Barry Faulkner, told us “Tales of the Biggest Robberies of the 60s -

90s and the Geezers Wot Dun 'em”. And my goodness, they were all there, from the Messina Brothers, Bert Rossi (in cahoots with the Mafia) who mentored the notorious North London Krays, who were in conflict with the South London

Richardsons.... The memories came flooding back as Barry spoke of The Great Train Robbery, the Knightsbridge Safety Deposit Box robbery, the Brinks Mat raid at Heathrow in 1983, when the actual raiders were not expecting a £26 million haul in gold bullion and had to get outside “help” to deal with it, (and that “help”

included Kenny Noyes!) Oh the names – Bruce Reynolds, Ronnie and Reggie, Eddie and Charlie Richardson from the past, and then on to the modern day crime family of Terry, Micky and Patsy Adams, The Clerkenwell Mob. They “franchised”

(permitted) the Hatton Garden raid, Brinks Mat, as well as being suspected of up to 25 murders – none provable in law. Retribution came with the Criminal Proceeds Act. These multi millionaire villains paid the huge fines in cash!

The stories were fascinating and told with grim humour. (My favourite: Barry and

a friend, as kids, making money by cleaning Eddie Richardson's cars. Two strict rules: don't look in the boot, and don't look in the glove compartment.”) Let's hope it didn't give any of his audience ideas for a new career or hobby!

Then – wow. President Marilyn made a birthday cake. Correction – an enormous brandy-soaked cake, fabulously iced with motids from our WI cloth. As we consumed our wine, and cheese & pate plates, it sat alongside several other splendid cakes and just sang our “Eat me!” We really needed our coffee and After

Eight Mints (other wafer-thin mints are available,) after that little lot! What a birthday!

Our next, very much calmer meeting will be on Monday 20th April, 7.30pm in

Fladbury Village Hall, with Rooftop Fitness and Wellbeing. (we need it.) Visitors

are very welcome. Any queries, phone Jacky Easter on 01386 861630, or Marilyn on 861647.

Cropthorne & Charlton - Christine Farrell

Our last meeting was held in the village hall at Cropthorne on Tuesday 10th March.

Annie opened the meeting and welcomed members and our speaker. She gave reminders to members of forthcoming events. Denman visit is for members only

on 25th March. Pick up at Cropthorne and Charlton at 8.30am to arrive at 10.30am and leave at 3.45 pm.

A number of members and friends are visiting Norton Envirosort Recycling .

Members were asked to consider help with tea and cakes at the Cropthorne

Walkabout 24/25 May this year.

A guided walk around Pershore is to be organised by Sue Miller in June - date to be advised. Probable start time 6.15pm with ? meal after walk.

Annie reported that a number of members had enjoyed an evening at Fladbury village hall to celebrate the 90th birthday of Fladbury and Moor WI. It was a lovely evening with a warm welcome and tasty refreshments. The guest speaker, Barry Faulkner gave an entertaining talk on Big robberies!

St Paul's hostel is in need of individual soaps, shower gels and shampoo and would be grateful for any leftovers which members may have ie- from hotel visits.

The Summer outing will be a trip to Shrewsbury to include a river trip and the

cathedral.

Jane reminded us that sign up boards were available for these events and many others including an invitation from Eckington for open meeting on April 1st in the village hall.

Short stories may be entered for the Lady Denman Cup - Title ' What I heard on the bus!'

We then enjoyed a fascinating insight into the world of Bees given by our guest

speaker - Jo Worthy-Jones. She gave an informative and entertaining talk and answered our many questions.

FLADBURY CE FIRST SCHOOLCOVID 19 pandemic - update during School Closure

As always our parents have been very thoughtful in their

requests and consequently we have been able to cover

all of our key workers' childcare needs whilst they strive to

keep everyone safe.

We have not forgotten the rest of our families and will be keeping in touch to

celebrate home learning and to monitor progress. Our lines of

communication remain open and parents can be assured we will do

everything we can to support their children's learning.

We are extremely grateful to all staff and parents for their care and support

during this extremely worrying time.

Avoiding Extinction!

Fladbury has a great environment and enthusiastic staff who encourage

children to make the most of this through the Forest School scheme. They

enjoy outdoor activities, whatever the weather or season. They grow (and

eat!) their own strawberries, have a wormery, a nesting box where they

monitor birds, find out about bees and create a tower for minibeasts to call

home!

Our lottery funded eco-house helps children learn about sustainable energy

-there is a solar panel and a wind turbine. They can accurately measure the

output of the energy produced by both wind and sun and have already found

out that enough energy is quickly produced to light a lamp and to recharge a

laptop. This encourages them to think hard about ways they can save money

and help the planet by using renewable energy in the future.

Happy EasterIn spite of all of our worries, we wish everyone a very happy Easter and look

forward to seeing everyone back at school as soon as possible.

As ever we have enjoyed an exciting half term here at Cropthorne-withCharlton CE First School, with the children pulling out all the stops in preparation for their production of ‘Ye-Ha’ at Number 8 in Pershore. We have been so impressed as the children have

worked with such dedication and enjoyment in all their rehearsals for the big show!

The Open the Book Team recently kept us mesmerised with their depiction of the story ‘Jesus & the Children’ which reminded us all of the importance of listening to each other.

Years 2 & 3 have been busy as ever, exploring the Easter Story in lots of different ways. We hope you enjoyed reading some extracts from their brilliant writing below. Happy Easter Everybody!

Rob Bothma, Headteacher, Cropthorne with Charlton C of E First School

Year 2 - Thoughts on EasterJesus: “This is going to be our last supper.”Disciples: “What? Why?”Jesus: “It is because you are going to betray me.”Disciples: “No! Why would we do that?”Jesus: “Tomorrow you will.”Disciples (shocked): “Which one of us?”Jesus: “It is you….”By Abby –Year 2

Shrove Tuesday is for making pancakes. On Ash Wednesday the vicar marks the cross on your forehead and it marks the start of Lent. Lent is when we give up something until Lent is over because of Jesus walking through the desert for 40 days and 40 nights. Maundy Thursday is for remembering Jesus being humble and washing the disciples’ feet. Good Friday is when we remember Jesus is killed on the cross and there is a service and it can last 3 hours! Easter Sunday is when Jesus is resurrected.

By Poppy – Year 3

Jesus asked his disciples to fetch him a donkey. His disciples were confused and thought very hard but in the end they did it. The crowd threw palm leaves on the floor as Jesus rode to Jerusalem on the donkey. In the evening Jesus said, “This is the last supper.” Everyone was full of sorrow. He said, “One of you will hand me over to the soldier. Eat the bread, it is my body. Drink this, it is my blood. Remember me when I am gone.” They walked to the Mount of Olives. In the morning before sunrise Jesus was put in jail. Who should be freed? The killer or Jesus? “The killer!” everyone shouted. And so Jesus, who did no harm, was crucified. Jesus shouted, “This is the end!” He was put in a tomb stone. One day Mary and some other friends of Jesus went to the tomb stone but noticed it was open!

Many thanks to everyone who put used Christmas cards into the box at the back of Fladbury Church. There are quite a few! If anyone would like some to make into new Christmas cards for a charity, please let me know – Jane 860531

Clearing clutter? Perhaps putting paper, cardboard and glass bottles in the green bin will make room for holding on to things for recycling for charities until we are all out and about again.

Hold on to coins and notes – old and forgegn, postcards – new and used, jewellery, postage stamps, plastic milk bottles tops, mobile phones, used candles, old felt tip pen. Anything else?

Furniture and other household items suitable for reuse, such as bedding, curtains, utensils, crockery and small electrical items, can be collected by Roundabout – to check, ring 01386 833030
