Write of Way, by Suesan Way

Canadian Geese

The registration road for the 2014 Porsche Parade in Monterey may have been extremely difficult for those who chose to travel it but, if you made it through to the other side and up the hill, I can just about guarantee you that the Parade staff will offer you an event to remember and a venue that will make you smile for a lifetime.

This will be my 9th Parade since I learned how to spell PORSCHE and began playing Porsche ID on the highways and byways of my favorite two nations and, let me tell you, the Parade team hasn’t missed yet. Some Parades are more memorable than others BUT (and this is a big BUT) putting on a Parade in Monterey, California (which doesn’t look easy) is going to be AMAZING.

"Why Suesan?" you are asking. I’ll tell you. When you first go to Monterey, you might first see it as a small, touristy and extremely charming little place... And it does have that feel.

However, Monterey is a destination location. The "quiet" season is moderately touristy, but the rest of the year is full tilt boogie. The Monterey Historics (each and every August) has grown from Historics Weekend to Car Week, and is starting to look like Car Month! Many people book their rooms years in advance.

Then there was Rennsport Reunion that many of us went to. That was another huge event and, again, Monterey kept us smiling by day with every Porsche imaginable there. And by night we went to the wonderful restaurants and fun places hanging out with Porsche friends. And Monterey accommo-dated us all and still can.

If you have never been to Monterey you will love it for its quaintness and sheer breathtaking beauty of the rugged, rocky coastline with the magnificent flat topped slanted cypress trees that reign there. Next door is Carmel, where Clint Eastwood still resides and owns a great little inn and restaurant and sometimes plays piano for the diners. It is a beautiful town with gorgeous shops filled with things of beauty and wonder. But, don’t go too late — Carmel rolls up the sidewalks at 9pm).

And don’t forget the track in them there hills. Laguna Seca is revered by many (cursed, I am sure, by some) and loved by lots. During the last weekend of Parade, the Golden Gate Region of PCA will host a 2-day Drivers Ed event at this wonderful track. It will be a hot ticket item, and is sure to sell out as soon as registration opens (if you think registering for Parade was tough, just stand back for this one and hold on to your first born).

If you haven’t signed up for Parade because you have heard that the tours are sold out, the hotels are sold out and you probably will not be able to get dinner tickets, hold on to your horses. I can tell you this – registration is still open, meals are available, more tours are being added on as we speak AND, while the "parade hotels" are sold out, there are plenty of other great rooms available right there.

If you have any trouble registering, or need other help or questions answered, give me a call or send an email. I'll be glad to help.

Even if you don't buy meal tickets in advance, you can almost always find tickets for sale (or free) on the Bulletin Board in Parade Hospitality. There are usually Tour tickets also available. Or maybe someone looking for a rally or a golf partner. It will be the last opportunity for a West Coast Parade for a couple of years, so now is your opportunity!

If you cannot find a tour you can make up your own tours and go for drives with a map or GPS or hang around the hospitality area….but you have to register for Parade to be part of it all http://www.pca.org/

Or have a look at the Parade website – at http://parade2014.pca.org/

April 2014

Rolling right along through 2014, the Grand Prix Region calendar has not been lacking. Whether it's Performance Driving, Tours, or other social activities, so will find many to choose from. If you need an excuse for a road trip to Tucson, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Morro Bay, Solvang, Santa Barbara or dozens of other locations throughout the southland, just look around at the Porsche Club of America calendar.

Of course, you can venture well out of the Southwest if you've got the time and inclination. Suesan and I have been hear-ing about the annual Labor Day PCA race at Road America for ever (OK, maybe only since the 1950's). So, last year Suesan and I planned a vacation to this event.

For those of you who don't know, Road America is a permanent road course located about 2 miles from Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. It is one of only a handful of road circuits in the world that maintains its original configuration: 4.048 miles and 14 turns. It has a lot of elevation change and a front straight that sees speeds approaching 200 mph. Its forest like setting make this 640 acre site one of the most beautiful courses I've ever been to.

Racing in the area started in the late 1940s, organized by the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America). Elkhart Lake's current population is under 1000, and the first races were held on a street circuit starting and finishing in the town center and circling the lake. The 1951 race drew a crowd of 50,000, and 1951 drew 100,000, which was the last year of the street circuit. In September 1955, the first race was held on the new Road America track.

The annual Labor Day PCA Club Race is a party not to be taken lightly. On Saturday afternoon after the racing is fin-ish, police escort the race cars to the center of Elkhart Lake, which hosts a street concours. PCA, Chicago Region hosts a concours the same day, and those cars are also on display. Siebkens Report hosts the Saturday night dinner. This turn of the century resort is owned and operated by the 4th generation of the Siebken family. I'm guessing that they feed 800-900 people (I didn't ask). You can sit outside, inside,

in a bar, in a tent, walk down the street with a plate... It is a classic, pure and simple. The Stop-Inn Tavern is a must see, if for nothing else but the historic racing stick-ers that cover the walls.

So, Suesan and I went for the party, helped out a little, stayed at the beautiful Osthoff Resort, and had a real vacation at a PCA event. And I ran out of room and didn't even mention the fabulous racing, the great restaurants and people (and we're planning another trip there in 2014).

Page 8: April 2014 - PCA GPXgpx.pca.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/GrandPrixRegion... · 2019. 4. 3. · 11-13 F-Sun Audi Club DE, Spring Mtn 3.4 mi 310-200-8416 13 Sun Rose Bowl Swap Meet

After 20 years off the track, I took my 2011 997 GT3 RS 4.0 to The Streets of Willow Springs (aka SOW) on Monday, March 17 for the Grand Prix Region's Day Away From Work Drivers Ed event. I had a great time exploring the awesome capabilities of the 4.0, since you never know what you have in your garage until you take it to the track!

After an uneventful morning drive from Manhattan Beach, I got to SOW at 7:30am wishing that I had brought a coat (it was a little chilly, but mostly it was windy — REAL windy!). I hit a minor glitch right away when I tried to put my old magnetic numbers on the doors (the 997s doors are aluminum, so the magnetics just dropped to the ground and had to be duct taped on in a most unaesthetic manner! After a well-conducted and informative driver's meeting, I put on my Nomex driving suit (which is pretty tight compared to 20 years ago), slipped on my Nomex driving gloves and shoes and a new Simpson 2010 Snell-rated helmet, and headed onto the track with my instructor, Allan Rosenberg. I requested an instructor because of my DE rustiness as well as unfamiliarity with the track.

I wasn't smooth at first and did a lot of old movie-style wheel sawing to correct slides, which resulted in appropriate gentle scolding by Allan. I was also tend-ing to apex the corners too early and was messed up on my turn in and drift points (i.e. I wasn't using the whole track width, which you need to do for the best times). By early afternoon I was finally putting things together with Allan complimenting me on my smoothness and racing lines (which certainly were not perfect on every lap. I was turning respectable laps on the 1.8 mile course, hitting 114mph in 4th gear on the back straight going into the heavily banked (20 degrees) bowl at the top of the hill, and 116mph on the front straight (not that I was paying too much attention to the digital speedo readout!). If I had more huevos and had taken the final dogleg left onto the front straight flat and braked later, I'm sure I could have hit 120+ speeds (much higher on SOW than I had expected!

One thing I had forgotten is how exhausting it is to be driving so intensly for those 20 minute sessions. I was breathing pretty hard with a high heart rate after about 15 minutes of each sessions. But I DID have a big smile on my face and, even though I had two other cars spin out in front of me, I did not have any offs (aka farming expeditions during the course of the day).

Another fun thing was the nice variety of sporty cars in the 85 car field, includ-ing a Corvette Z06, BMW's, Honda S2000's, Lotus's, a Mini, Mazda Miata's, a Suburu WRX STI and a Mustang. It made for an interesting mix. One father/son team had the dad in a 911 Turbo and the son in a BMW, which results in an ongoing family feud. There were five other GT3's with my car the "lone" RS 4.0, so I got a lot of much-appreciated attention and compliments for tracking such a valuable car. But then, that's what they're made for!

Page 9: April 2014 - PCA GPXgpx.pca.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/GrandPrixRegion... · 2019. 4. 3. · 11-13 F-Sun Audi Club DE, Spring Mtn 3.4 mi 310-200-8416 13 Sun Rose Bowl Swap Meet

I was running the RS 4.0 on the 100 octane Unocal unleaded racing gas available at the track so as to get the full 500HP available from my motor. It was noticeably zippier with possibly another 20-25HP, plus better throttle response. The reason for the additional zip is that Porsche motors are engineered to run on 93 octane gas that is available everywhere on the planet except California where we're stuck with 91 octane unleaded premium, which is obviously a misnomer except with regard to price! It only takes a few gallons of the $9.50/gal racing gas (dilution tables available at the Unocal website) to bring the octane up to 93 and anything more than that is a waste of money.

Although there were drivers who were quite a bit faster (as I expected), there weren't any cars in my run group that I didn't see receding into the distance in my mirrors on the straights when my car was at full throttle with absolutely ferocious acceleration that scared me a little. The ceramic brakes were also amazing and I know, as Allan pointed out several times, that I could have gone deeper into most of the corners. But there is always next time!

San Diego Region DE & Zone 8 Time TrialChuckwalla (CCW)Saturday, May 3 — Sunday, May 4, 2014Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, Desert Center, CA

Join us as we head back to Southern California's newest track. This event features both a Driver's Ed (DE) and a Time Trial (TT), with separate run groups for each event and differing entrant requirements (DE events have no driv-ing prerequisites). Time Trials, which have driving prereq-uisites, work like a Driver's Ed event during practice, but feature Transponder timing during all sessions with times posted online immediately thereafter as well as in the Club's permanent record database after the event. Novice DE driv-ers currently signing up are being Waitlisted pending the availability of additional Instructors (though we hope to be able to accommodate at least some of those on the Waitlist).

If you are interested in participating as a novice DE Student, indicate your interest by signing up ASAP.

You may sign up for any one or both days. The base price for this event (assumes early registration, no need to rent any-thing, etc.) is $270 for the weekend.

For information and registration, go to:http://pcasdr.motorsportreg.com/

I am the second of seven siblings, was mar-ried for 30 years and have been a widower for 15. I drove my first Porsche (a 1967 911) at Competition Motors in Culver City. I loved the acceleration and sound of this car as I went through the gears.

My late wife, Melva, fell in love with Porsches after a friend invited us to a BPI (Black Porsche Inc) event at the Bob Bondu-rant school in Ontario CA.

I am a Porsche fanatic. I have owned three. The first was a 1964 356C purchased in 1972. I had no experience with Porsche and, as such, didn't make a good choice in this car. It had spent many years in German winters — lots of rust. I didn't despair, but repaired the rust as best as I could, repainted the interior and exterior and added new upholstery. After buying the 356 I joined BPI and started participating in their activities. I did a Concours and a few Rallys, then drove to my first PCA Parade Concours in 1973 as a friend entered his 1963 Carrera 2.

In 1975, while out enjoying the 356, Melva and I stopped at Kendon Motors in Harbor City and saw a 1974 Copper Brown Metallic 911 Targa with brick red cloth and vinyl interior. We fell in love with it. It became our daily driver (except for a short time when I purchased a Nissan 210 wagon to transport my son James and niece Kellye Backstrom around).

I did a few more Rallies and a couple of Autocross events with with this car. I was a BPI member for 5 years, but stopped attending meetings in 1977 after buying my present home in Harbor City. I joined the Porsche Club of America and became a Grand Prix Region member after seeing all the Porsches at Ricky's and Ronny's one Saturday morning in May 2006. Ricky and Ronny's was the location of our monthly Breakfast Club meetings back then.

I had been introduced to Michael Dolphin at an evening af-fair by a mutual friend, Melinda Wilson. Michael was the first person that I saw when I entered the parking lot. I knew imme-diately that I wanted to be a part of this club. I've always had a love for photography and soon started taking photos at our Breakfast Club Meetings. It was the perfect venue to improve my photography skills. Soon my photos were being used in our monthly magazine, The Circuit. Later the Web-master position opened up and I was asked to do that job. My

Goddaughter taught website classes at Cal State Dominguez Hills, so I took up the challenge. I had a little computer experience while working at Hughes Aircraft/Boeing Satellite Company. Lan-guages such as Basic, C++ and Unix and terms like ftp and links were familiar to me. I learned enough to build a website but didn't feel I had the artistic knowledge to significantly improve it. I gradually made changes to build the website to where it is today.

In May, 2011 I purchased a 997 Carrera GTS. The '74 Targa had been purchased without air condition-ing, and I wanted a more confortable car for long trips with the club. I chose this car more because of the body styling and not so much for the horsepower. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I love being in the club and have gained a lot of knowledge about Porsches through Tech sessions, talking with other members and our magazine. Everyone in the club has treated me well and I have gained some lasting friendships. My pho-tography has enabled me to be more outgoing and meet lots of people everywhere I go.

I retired from Hughes Aircraft Co/ Boeing Satellite Systems in 1999 and returned as a contractor in 2000 after my wife Melva passed.

One of the best vacation trips was to Nairobi Kenya for a photo safari with my brother. We spent 16 days traveling around to the various camps taking photos of the popular game in the area. My bucket list includes more travel. Oh yes, and I plan on getting back on a track soon! My son James at 2 years old with my first

Racing with Heroesby Reg May, published by Veloce Publishing Limited, Dorchester, England

Bruce Herrington

This is a book that is easy to dismiss, based on the just the specs. The author is not a journalist, not even a writer. This is his only published writing. Furthermore, not only did the author not personally race with the heroes described, he never raced anyone. But Reg May is the consummate motor racing spectator who has attended many significant races and studied many more. His commentary, as a result, is full of historical references. These touches may be thought pro-voking to those who have some familiarity with the events and people to which he refers, but may perhaps be boring details to, shall I say, a younger generation. Note: Reg May was born in 1947, but he discusses events going back at least as far as 1906, and provides grand descriptions of motor races from as early as 1935.

As one steeped in the history of motor-sport, the author starts his book with the obligatory (and all too appropriate) lament over the way motor-sport has evolved into motor racing-business, where sportsmanship tends to take a back seat to winning, rather than the other way around as it used to be (at least in minds of the old pharts).

Racing with Heroes is a collection of chapters, each dealing with a particular race. The race reports are eloquently presented in self-suffi-cient chapters. The stories are great and well told. Included are many classic events – of course Moss '55 Mille Miglia run; Fangio's classic stroking the Ferrari's into complacency, then catching and beating them in the last laps at Nurburgring, etc. Through it all, the reoccurring theme is the passion for motor sport that drives (!) the dedicated race driver or spectator (or even the author of this book). Both Formula and Sports Car events are included from all over the world, except the USA. The use of present tense and de-scriptions in vivid detail make each chapter a thrilling read.

There is one chapter that deals with the good ol' days of family tent camping at the circuit, watching and smelling the cars as they go by on the other side of the fence. The final chapter deals with a passion-ate amateur who managed to race with the professionals from time to time over a 50 year span, clearly the inspiration for the title.

As a publication, Racing with Heroes is not perfect. There is some awkward grammar (not merely quirks of the King's Eng-lish) and some typos. But most of all the book seems awkward because there is no apparent rhyme or reason in the non-chronological organization of the stories. In particular, the descrip-tion of a 2008 event at finishes with a teaser about the story of the '09 event which is not only not next, but not even anywhere in the book. It is best read as a collection of chapters, not as a book to read through from start to finish.

This is a little book, pamphlet size, with 128 6 x 8-1/4 inch pages, slightly smaller the original Pano. There are some interesting pictures/illustrations collected into the middle of the book, and each chapter includes

a somewhat stylized course map. As a collection of short, in-dependent chapters about historic motor races, it is a handy book to have for those occasional moments of spare time when you want something interesting to read but don't want to get committed to reading a whole book.

Racing with Heroes should be available for $19.95 from your favorite book seller (ask for it) or www.motorbooks.com

March Breakfast Club at Tilted Kiltby Skip Carterphotos by Jimmie MitchellOur March Breakfast Meeting had a great turnout with quite a few new members. As you know, we give each new member an official Grand Prix Region mug. Bob and Junko Baddy (keeper of the mugs) handed out so many we need to order another gross (best pricing). If you have somehow missed out on your mug, make a note to come to the MAY Breakfast (Bob and Junko will be at Festival for the April Breakfast, which is why I'm suggesting May).

I'm rishing to get the April Circuit done before we head out to the Festival (California Festival of Speed). If you get a chance to come out any of the three days, I think you will have a great time. Porsche is bringing out a couple of new cars for YOU to test drive on a mini-autocross.

Tech Notes from Tony Callas & Tom PrineComplexities of Replacing Components on Your CarA customer recently came in slightly perplexed at some work he performed on his own 2006 997 Carrera S. The initial problem was that the passenger side electric window began to slow and strain when closing the window. Finally the mo-tor stopped working completely. The customer purchased a new factory window motor, installed it and, to his surprise, discovered that the motor would not operate at all. By the time he came to see us he was more than a little frustrated. His demeanor changed when he found out that there was nothing wrong with the new motor, or even the way it was installed — it just had to be coded to the car.

In today’s world of increasingly complex automotive elec-tronic systems, one of the realities is that components on the car must be recognized by its intended control system in order to communicate and function normally. This is simply known as a “handshake” between controllers. Another inter-esting fact is that various electrical consumers (a consumer is an electrical device) will share one module (as in the case of the window motor). The window motor and other items share a single module: the Door Control Module. The customer did not know this and did not possess the means to code the new motor and controller into the system. Today, professional Porsche repair facilities must have the electronic diagnostic equipment with the correct software designed to talk to the onboard systems of the car. These electronic di-agnostic tools make it possible to program new components into their operational role in the car.

Unfortunately, the cost and complexity of owning and us-ing these diagnostic scan tools make it unrealistic for most vehicle owners to purchase and operate them. Once the new component is installed and wired, the coding can take place. With the electronic scan tool connected to the car, there are about eight choices to perform during the coding procedure for the window motor. Once the coding is complete, the mo-tor will be ready to operate but, in the case of the windows, they will also have to be initialized. This is the process of setting the operational limits of the window motors.

The window initialization is done by moving the window all the way to its upper and lower stops via the window switch. Once the window reaches the upper stop, continue to hold the window switch in the up position request for ap-proximately an additional 3 seconds, then push the window switch to lower the window. When the window reaches the lower stop, continue to hold the window switch in the lower

request position (again for about 3 seconds). Repeat as needed until the one touch activation works. The passenger window will not have one touch until the window reaches approxi-mately 65% of the up position for the 997s.

The sunroof assembly requires a completely different process for initialization following the completion of all repairs. You push the sunroof switch to the vent or up position and hold the switch in this position until the entire initialization is completed. The sunroof should open to the vent position and stop. Nothing may happen for some time but, as you continue to hold the switch in the vent position, the ini-tialization phase should start and the sunroof will begin to operate. Continue holding the switch in the this position. The sunroof will fully open and fully close, thus completing the sunroof initialization process. You can then release the sunroof switch. The sunroof initialization might take a few attempts to get the process completed.

Another point to consider is the car’s system voltage when diagnosing, testing or performing an initialization. When an engine is running, the alternator is tasked with produc-ing voltage to charge the battery and power all the electrical consumers in the car. Normally the alternator will produce in the neighborhood of 13.5-14.5 volts and the electrical consumers and circuits are designed to operate in this volt-age window to perform properly. However, this voltage is not available when the engine is not running and the key is turned on for diagnostic and testing purposes. During this testing there is a heavy load against the battery due to all the electrical consumers operating. It is highly recommended to have a Power Supply connected to the car to achieve the cor-rect voltage and avoid draining the battery.

A Power Supply (not a battery charger) will provide a con-stant and stable voltage feed at high amperage output and without stray A/C voltage being emitted. With the Power Supply connected the electrical system of the car, you will see the same conditions as if the engine/alternator were operating. Enjoy your Porsche
