From The President's Desk2017 Zone 8 Region of the Year

Jeff

Welcome to 2019! Another year has gone by, and we’re entering a new one. What a great 2018 we had in the Grand Prix Region. We had events every month: great tours, social events and driving events. Our monthly breakfast has had fantastic attendance and our Cone Zone has been especially successful.

In December we celebrated the holidays at our annual Holiday Party at the Long Beach Yacht Club. It’s a fun event, and our MC, Nick Perdikaris, kept the celebration moving with his wit and humor. We honored our Enthusiast of the Year, Patty Reilly (you can meet Patty at our monthly breakfast check in). We had a live auction, and a silent auction benefiting our charity, the Children’s Dental Health Clinic in Long Beach. We raised a significant amount of money for them, and I’d like to thank those members that won the auction items.

We also installed our new board for 2019. I’ll be around as your President for another year. Our new Vice President for 2019 is Doc Pryor, a long-time member of the Grand Prix Region. He’s been an active and instrumental member since 1990. Alan Johnson remains on the board and will continue as our Tours Chair, putting together the best tours, as always. Alan has some great tours lined up for 2019 already. Please look at our calendar on the inside cover of this magazine.

I’ll be putting together a couple of things myself. Our annual Santa Monica Mountains Fun Run (which may have to be truncated due to the Malibu fires), and our tour of the universe at the Mt. Wilson 60-inch telescope. I may also try to get us a daytime tour of the Mt. Wilson Observatory.

We will also have our annual GPX Day Away from Work events at Streets of Willow on March 11th, and October 14th. If you’ve already been, you know how much fun it is. If you haven’t run your Porsche on track, what are you waiting for?

I’d like to also thank all those members who have attended our events during the year, and a special thanks to all those members who have volunteered to help at our events. It’s your club and we couldn’t do any of this without you.

2019 California Festival of SpeedI would also like to make a special pitch for volunteers for

the 2019 California Festival of Speed on March 29-31. Please think about volunteering. As usual, we will need 350 – 400 volunteers.

The California Festival of Speed is the Porsche enthusiasts dream weekend: Club Race, Time Trial, Swap Meet, Porsche Corral, Porsches For Sale, Porsche Timeline Display, Vendor

Row, Track Tours, Friends, Fun and all things Porsche. Need we say more? This event has race cars, show cars, it can even have your car!

Contact: Janice Witteried at [email protected] to volunteer.

Another great year coming upI’m looking forward to another great year for the Grand

Prix Region in 2019 and look forward to seeing you at breakfast and our many events.

Please join us every month for our Breakfast Club on the first Saturday of every month at Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach.

And, please visit our GPX Store for some terrific club merchandise.

SOCIALMEDIALINKS

January already? Yup! Suesan and I took a three week trip to Toronto and North Carolina in October. We try to get to Toronto once or twice a year to visit family and friends (Suesan grew up there) and Chimney Rock, North Caro-lina is where a good friends of ours, George Carter, moved earlier in 2018. Chimney Rock's permanent population is 120 (counting George and Jeremy). Less than an hour from Ashville, it is a beautiful area with a river running alongside the highway. We met lots of nice people. As one person put it "We're mountain people and would never leave."

Unbeknownst to me, we were there at the perfect time of year. Fall colors, NO insects (that's a big one), a little rain, comfortable weather, gorgeous scenery and, as I said, lots of nice people.

Landing in Raleigh about 9am, we first drove to Ayden, NC, where I had read (in the book "Cooked") about "the best whole hog BBQ in the world." The BBQ was pretty good (I think the young kid doing the mixing probably need-ed more tutoring), but the best part were seeing all of the locals stopping by to eat. Definately good "people watching."

Back home now, Suesan's "baby" sister Debra and her husband John bailed on the Toronto winter and came to stay with us in San Diego. Now, we're in the depth of So-Cal winter (obviously no comparison to Toronto). I wear a jacket every day, light a fire most nights, etc. John is running around in shorts and sandals and their number one priority is to get to a beach as often as they can.

It's really fun having them here. We really enjoy them and Suesan's other family and friends who come to visit, mostly from BC and Ontario.

At the end of this month we're off to Sebring for the first PCA Club Race of the year and the annual Award's Dinner. We love that part of Florida. The hotel, Chateau Elan, is right at the track and next to the original airport.

Not only is it the first PCA Club Race each year; it is also the biggest. This race is hosted by two Florida regions: Sun-coast and Gold Coast. They do an impressive job. I've talked to volunteers who have been working that event for 18-20 years, and wouldn't miss it for anything.

There are several very large Club Races in PCA. I've been to Watkins Glen, Road America, Summit Point, California Festival of Speed, and Daytona. I've been to quite a few smaller events as well: High Plains, Buttonwillow, Willow Springs, Laguna Seca, Miller (Utah Motorsports Campus now).

For 2019 the Golden Gate region has secured two full weekend events at Laguna Seca. Previously they would just buy a single run group from SCCA or others. This will undoubtedly switch Laguna Seca from a small to a big Club Race event. There are still another 15 or more venues that I have not been to, but I plan on getting to them all at least once.

I know that some of you have dreamed about either seeing or actually driving on many of these tracks. Almost all of these club races have associated DEs on the same weekend. Road America, for example (one of my absolute favorite events), runs (I believe) five days over Labor Day weekend. Sebring is four days. If you are a DE driver, think about it.

Sebring will be a short trip for us. With our new grandson, Cooper, Suesan's willingness to be away from San Diego for prolonged periods is greatly reduced... Not a bad thing! And I'm pretty appreciative of the whole thing too.

Anyway, here's the start of a new year. Hope to see you at an upcoming event. Look at our calendar AND our website, which Jimmie Mitchell keepts up to date (www.Grand-PrixRegion.com).

I also want to recognize Alicia Weaver, who has stepped up to manage the GPX Store (formally know as our Goodie Store).

With the first turn of its left-handed ignition, fantasy becomes reality. The driver’s seat previously reserved for dreams will now be beneath you. And the unmistakable engine note so often played in your head will now be courtesy of your right foot. Ahhhh, the sweet sound of fulfillment. Porsche. There is no substitute.

My name is Ken, and I own Auto Werkstatt.www.autowerkstatt.comPlease note that my website is over 12 years old (Yes, I need to update it).

I have a passion for the 356 models, as I own several of them. We have had 356s trucked to us from the midwest to work on, I consider our work to be of top notch quality. It is very rare that you could walk into my shop and not see several 356s that are being worked on.

I believe we do more newer Porsche's than most other independents in our area. We have the PIWIS computer and will do whatever it takes to keep up with the newest Porsche Technology.

I often will use the phrase "I will eat what I cook." What I mean by this is I will buy and drive the types of cars that we work on. For example, I bought an '06 C4S Cab so I could have first hand some of the issues these cars may have.

We are registered with the Better Business Bureau and have the highest possible score from them. I have been the owner of Auto Werkstatt for over 25 years. I would hope it gives you a feel for the type of business I have. Thanks,

Bright and Shiny ObjectsPorsche at the Los Angeles Auto Show Story & Photos:

Michael DolphinSo, here’s a narrative article but did you go the photos

first? And do you see enough photos of our favorite sports vehicles? Of course, I don’t blame you!

Jimmie Mitchell, Stephen Krupnick and I (as well as a few thousand other camera-bearers) have done the best we could to share the visuals of the Los Angeles Auto Show. It’s a good thing that camera memory is so inexpansive these days. We can get a few hundred shots in as little as an hour and not worry about counting the number of rolls and shots left if we were still using film.

Look beyond the cars themselves in many of the photos and you’ll see some amazing full-wall projections and productions that fully utilize large-scale audio and video technologies. In VERY many cases, the content, clarity and nearly 3-D resolutions sometime led you to believe that there were other cars in the room.

But, of course, we all were there primarily for the unveiling of the 2019 Porsche 911. For several years now, Porsche annual exclusive residency has been the Petrie Hall of the Convention Center for the largest display of any manufacturer at the Auto Show.

The debut was great – most of us already had clues about what to expect. Technology and innovation continue to totally amaze – the 3.0 liter motor in the new 911 is smaller than the Lee Rice-motor in my ’77 Carrera 3.0. Yet, with the addition of turbos and other technologies, the new motor makes TWICE as much power as my Carrera. For the engineer focused and gear heads among us, there are tons of info available about the new car’s qualities. For instance, would you believe that there is now a “Wet Mode” for the 911 to increase stability and handling in rainy conditions?

Attending the show however is our chance to get up close and personal to the details that we were soooooo interested in. Here are a just a couple of visuals that you can confirm by looking at the photos…

The Carrera, Carrera S and the Carrera 4S will all carry the same wide body stance as well as the full light bar across the entire back end. (You’ll see it clearly). Interestingly, I’ve seen overhead shots of the early 993 parked next to the new 992 and the “Coke” bottle influence appears to be identical.

Also take a look at the new door handles – they become flush when the car is in motion but project a little bit when the car is parked so to be easier to grasp (looking for opinions about that).

Note that the door rear-view mirrors now have distinct angular shapes. It’s been many years since that mirror has

been anything other than a form of smooth oval. The front hood now ends in a VERY angular way – it’s

actually a straight cut along the front edge. We’ve gotten used to depth differences between the

front and back wheels on Porsche cars, but now there are DIAMETER differences as well - 20 inch wheels at the front and 21 inch wheels at the rear.

These are changes to which we WILL become accustomed – heck, we’ve done it before with other models throughout the years. In my own defense, I don’t think of myself as a “purist” – I do however appreciate “tradition”. And so I DO miss the detail that there is now only ONE physical ring in the instrument display. The displays are customizable for a ton of other information options but I will so much miss the traditional Porsche dashboard cluster of instruments.

And so, know that you can Google a little bit and you’ll find, literally, thousands of great Porsche shots. But the fun of the actual visit is sharing among the hundreds of Porsche friends and opinions that we get to share.

Thanks to PCA-National for arranging the Friday morning Porsche previews to our club members for several years now. There actually are not many other better ways to spend a morning with Porsche Club members and friends.

I’ll let the photos tell the story….

STORY BY EDDIE RAPOSA , PHOTOS BY JIMMIE MITCHELL

Being a gathering of Porsche enthusiasts, it's not too unusual to see a new, or new-to-the-member, car at our Breakfast Club meetings. In December, three customized 914s showed up in the parking lot at Glory Days Beachside Grill - that's unusual. Turns out they had been at another car gathering and decided to check out our meeting. There was some concern they might be shunned

by the Porsche purists. Not so. The story of their cars fol-lows.

Eddie Raposa's Small Block Chevy 914Eddy got his first taste of Porsches in high school. His auto

shop teacher had an immaculate 911 they would work on, and clean, every day. Soon after that, a friend got a black 914-6. The car felt like it was on rails - so much fun to drive! Fast forward 25 years and Eddy was finally able to get his own, a 1973 914 2.0.

The 2.0 is super fun to drive but not the power Eddy wanted. So, he decided to do a conversion. The 2.0 is a very original car that he didn't want to hack-up. After doing the math he soon realized it was going to be very costly to do the conversion from scratch, so he bought an existing project car. That car came with a brand new small block 350 crate mo-tor, a new 901 transmission (modified with first gear blocked off and taller 4th and 5th gears for freeway cruising). It also had 911axles to handle the 400+ hp.

The car needed lots of work. The list included a new radiator, a high performance clutch and pressure plate, billet flywheel, new front valence, re-fabricated rear valance to ac-commodate the exhaust, and new brakes, including lines.

To prep the car for paint, Eddy removed all the interior, bumpers, trim, all the glass - everything that was bolted on. He did a lot of the surface prep work than sent it off to the

pros for paint. Re-assembly proved the wisdom of labeling all the parts during disassembly. All new rubber seals plus re-upholstered seats and interior completed the big pieces. Like most projects, they're never really done but he now has a car that is fun and a blast to drive!

Vinnie Pires 914 V8Some time ago Vinnie tried to buy a 1973 914 from a

friend. 20 years later, when visiting that friend's house, he noticed the 914 sitting under a tree. Apparently it had been sitting there for almost as many years. Askied if it was the same 914, his friend said "call a tow truck and it's yours." Once the car was home it was clear a complete mechanical and cosmetic makeover was needed to bring it back to its former glory and make it roadworthy.

Vinnie chose a 1961-1963 Buick 215 cu. in. aluminum small block for the swap. It was sourced from another 914 enthusiast in Corvallis Oregon. The engine needed to be freshened up with a new cam, lifters, valve covers, oil pump and hardware. An Edelbrock intake and carburetor with an MSD Digital 6 ignition were added to provide fuel and spark. To make the car sound like a GT40 Vinnie (a profes-sional welder) built a set of bundle-of-snakes style 180 degree headers for it. Cooling is provided by an aluminum radia-tor retrofit up front and a Mezierre electric pump, as well as custom aluminum tanks Vinnie built to complete the system. All the additional required electrical was placed up under the front bonnet since "there isn't enough room under dash for a matchbook."

Cosmetic makeover was provided by a friend, Lance "Bones" Rowlett, in Huntington Beach. He talked Vin-nie into a traditional Candy Apple Red over Orion Silver. Concerned it might be "too much like a fishing lure" they decided to go for a GT look with Black Satin hoods and top. Interior leatherette and tweed stitch work on dash pads and custom consoles was provided by Nacho's Interiors in Long Beach. Finding needed parts to sort out mechanical issues and electrical gremlins was assisted by Bruce Stone, a local 914 guru.

The combination of the sound and feeling of the alumi-num V8 with the handling of a 914 provide an amazing ride. All the thumbs up's from other drivers help put a smile on Vinnie's face. He is currently working on a 1966 912.

Carl Winefordner's Electric 914Carl's car was first converted to lead acid batteries, weighed

3350 pounds, had little power, and only about a 40 mile range. So the original owner converted it to lithium batteries and a more powerful DC motor, bringing the weight down to about 2800 pounds. Carl bought it like this. The car was almost frighteningly fast off the line, with about 400 lb-ft of torque. But it didn't have any regenerative braking, the

brushes wore out every 3000 miles (and very hard to replace because batteries crowded the motor), and Carl was con-cerned the torque was going to break the transaxle.

So, Carl had the car converted to AC. It lost another 100 lbs. in part because EV West reduced the battery count to 90 from original 102. Even with the reduced batteries, the range got longer, partly because of the availability of regenerative braking, and partly because AC motors are more efficient than DC. Range is now 160 miles if driven easily (65mph highway or easy city driving) or 120 miles with a mixture of driving. Top speed is theoretically at least 125 MPH.

The two AC motors (on one shaft) were dyno'd at 190 lb-ft of torque (0-5000 rpm constant) and 165 hp. The performance with the AC motors is similar to the DC, which means the 0-60 time is in the low 5 second range. The red-line is artificially set at 7200rpm to not over-rev the transaxle. The only wearing parts in the motors are two big cartridge ball bearings, which are rated for 750,000 miles of driving. The batteries are supposedly good for 5000 full charges (until they reach 80% capacity) and, given the range, that should be over 500,000 miles.

Charging can be done at any public charging station, or at home. Carl's 220 volt (6 kw) charger charges the batteries from empty in 6 hours. A 120 volt charger takes four times longer. Fully charging between midnight and 6AM, costs $3.20. Weird fact: electric cars use less electricity than most gasoline cars. 6.5kwh of electricity is required to refine a gal-lon of gas. 6.5kwh is enough to drive an electric car farther than the average gas powered car can travel on a gallon of gas.

The two photos on the left are Vinnie Pires and his Buick V-8 powered 914. His professional welding is sure shown off with the exhaust system. The sound was, well, very impressive

The three photos above show Carl Winefordner's electric 914. The finish work (interior and exterior) were done with a lot of care

Nostalgia time indeed. A Hot Wheels book that comes in a replica Hot Wheels storage case. For the dedicated Hot Wheels fan, this case is clearly a must. Not only is the feel of the plastic authentic, the enclosed book provides more information about Hot Wheels, their design, production and marketing than the non-enthusiast would have ever believed existed. The foreword by one who spent 40 years designing Hot Wheels cars gives insight into what was very much a California-Casual company. As described, Mattel was virtu-ally founded to peddle the products of a very prolific artist/designer who, it turned out, had great market-ing insight. It was a company built, not to fill market vacuums, but to create products that would build their own demand.

Hot Wheels were initiated into a world where Matchbox, Dinky, Corgi, Husky and other toy cars had been established for years. HOT WHEELS tells a story interesting for its insights into business management, as much as for the history of what is now claimed to be the best selling toy in the world. It is the story of an idea for a new product that was alien to the current flagship product (dolls for girls), a product designed for what experts believed to be a saturated market, a product that achieved production levels of a million per day!

The Hot Wheels world was one of ceaseless challenge to innovate and one-up any com-petition. The engineers' creativity was honed by managements willingness to produce and try marketing most any crazy product, an amazing number of which did sell, even Hot Wheels birthday candles! Many Hot Wheels specialty items were sold in small quantities, so their description in this book will be eye-opening to most readers. Enough to make one want to be a kid again and catch up on that neat stuff that got missed on the first pass through youth.

Because Hot Wheels had a strong marketing focus, they upscaled some of their special vehicles, often using Corvette running gear. There is an interesting description of how they even upscaled some of their stunts, starting a full sized ver-

sion of a hot wheels car, on a full sized version of the iconic orange track and performed full sized versions of Hot Wheels loops and jumps!

There are five chapters and several illustrated Timelines, cataloging some of the Hot Wheels models. Nowhere is there a complete listing of all Hot Wheels models. The book refer-ences as many as 120 new models a year, so a complete listing would be a Herculean task and be boring to most readers.

There is Porsche content. Many Porsche models were miniaturized and the book has a picture of a small private

collection dis-played in front of the owner's real world early 911 racer.

HOT WHEELS is a very readable presentation of a complex and ever evolving story. It is a book that can be enjoyed even by those (few ?) lacking affin-ity for the Hot Wheels hobby. The author, Kris Palmer has writ-ten several other car oriented books, included Dream Ga-rages, which was reviewed a little over four years

ago. With its unique presentation format (a book in a plastic case, complete with a handle) it would make a most memo-rable gift for any occasion. The book itself is hardbound, with 160 profusely illustrated 8x11 inch pages, but no index. It should be available for $40.00 from your favorite book-seller (ask for it), or from Motorbooks.com.
