It happened in a blur — Parade was in front of us and the long haul to Indiana was to be my burden, and then Skip went waterskiing and tore his hamstring three days before we left. This only added to my travel hysteria, but Skip being Skip just kept right on going and, after a while I was getting skeptical about the diagnosis as he was moving at a pace I couldn’t keep up with all around a large resort several days into our trip.
We landed in Louisville, Kentucky and spent some time before heading to French Lick, Indiana (home of Larry Bird) and the site of the 2015 Porsche Parade. And, we arrived to a lot of rain.
The Welcome Party with the Janice Joplin look alike 356 and the Concours were both relegated to a parking structure with open sides. Orignally slated for a golf course, the down-pour made a change of venue mandatory. Of course this is the part where "it’s not just the cars, it’s the people" comes in with the Porsche Club. Because, no matter how much rain landed in French Lick (and land it did in stunning fashion) no one on the Parade team, or the French Lick Resort team seemed to stop for a moment or to blink an eye. It was fast forward and straight on Mrs. Brown, where challenges were discussed, decisions made and resolutions happened and reported with all of the teams. The Concours and Historic Car teams were brilliant and the Facilitates Chair was like a member of the Cirque du Soleil.
So, it was a different kind of Concours, without panoramic views, but the cars remained as beautiful as ever. The wel-come party, which is traditionally outside (also with views and vistas) was in the same parking garage, and the pour-ing rain couldn’t stop the great humor of everyone getting together to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of PCA.
Of course, the 919 Hybrids coming in 1st and 2nd the week earlier at the 24 Hours of Le Mans was also something for Porsche and the Club to celebrate. Parade attendees were thrilled to have Dr. Wolfgang Porsche and his son, Felix, join us and participate in the first few days of the festivities and activities. Apparently Felix, an 18 year, old took to the Parade Autocross. They also joined us on our Ohio Valley
Tour, which was fun for club members to lunch with some Porsche royalty and to get autographs and hear some stories.
Now that Parade is over and it is summer in Southern California, it is time to head to cooler weather up the coast... And that is exactly what many PCA and Grand Prix mem-bers will be doing mid-August with Car Week coming to the Monterey Peninsula. Along with the wonderful racing at Laguna Seca and the other end of the car world, the fabu-lous Pebble Beach Concours and, for our second year now, Porsche Werks Reunion!
There will, of course, be great dinners with friends and auc-tions that go on forever into the night.
Then later in the fall is another edition of all-Porsche every minute of everyday at Rennsport Reunion, which everyone is talking about and looking forward to with practically bated (or is that baited) breath.
We are off to our new members and everyone else party this coming Saturday and look forward to see many people who we haven’t met before. If you are not able to join us for this party, our next big party will be in December at the an-nual Holiday Party. This will include a special celebration to the 60th Anniversary of the Porsche Club of America on December 5th at the Long Beach Yacht Club.

It's the morning of the 4th of July as a sit down to write this column. Suesan and I have been back from the Parade in French Lick, Indiana for four days and the unpacking is about 75% done.
We flew in to Louisville, Kentucky and spent the night at the Galt House, a wonderful hotel overlooking the Ohio River. If there was only one thing I was impressed with (and there was certainly more than one) it was the politeness and thoughtfulness of almost everyone we encountered.
At 8AM the next morning I got a phone call from Enter-prise: "Mr. Carter, would you like us to pick you up from your hotel?" Are you kidding me? I went downstairs a few minutes later and was driven a few miles to the rental loca-tion (saved me a cab fare). I did NOT get sent out with a form to inspect the car. The gentleman came out with me and checked the car himself, telling me that it had about a quarter tank of gas and to please try to return it the same way. What happened to "We'd be happy to charge you $28.00 a gallon if you do not return it full!"
Our first night we took a cab to the Brown Hotel (a very famous Louisville hotel and family). We had an excellent dinner and got to try the famous "Hot Brown", a legendary dish created originally at this location in 1926.
As we were leaving the doorman offered to have their shuttle take us back to our hotel. Really???
The next day we headed to French Lick, Indiana, about 90 minutes away. This is the Ohio River Valley. It is lush and green and gets plenty of rain (ask me how I know). If you are interested, send me a note and I'll email you a 2 minute video I took one night from our hotel window. The lighting and thunder occurred at about three second intervals. One day I was about 3 miles from the hotel when the sky opened up. I immediately went from 75 to 30 mph and was very close to pulling over, except I could see the road better than the shoulder. Full wipers did not come close to keeping up.
The French Lick Resort consists of the French Lick Springs and West Badden Springs resorts (about a mile away from each other), a casino and several close by golf courses. All of
the surrounding towns are small and connected with very good quality two lane roads.
We got rain every other day or so, which forced the PCA team to relocate the Welcome Party and the 300+ car Concours from a golf course to an enclosed parking garage. If you have ever been to Parade, you know what a monumen-tal task this was. I have to say though, the hotel staff busted their butts way beyond the call of duty to help Parade staff make the change. It came off extremely well.
Anyway, there were several Grand Prix region members there. Michael Dolphin and Jimmie Mitchell are official Pa-rade photographers. Our president, Suesan conducts several "Parade 101" presentations to new Parade attendees in addi-tion to staffing the Parade Information booth.
I've been managing the Concours Prep area since the Mil-waukee Parade in 2001. Mine is a fairly easy job and gets me close to all those Concours folks without actually having to clean a car... My type of Concours job!

We train! The only requirement is your enthusiasm and love of racing
Have you always wanted to get involved with racing without the high cost of campaigning your own car? One way is to help coordinate Performance Driving events. Get the second best seat in the house! As a Flagger, you will be stationed at the corners helping to keep participants safe. Your job is to provide course condition information to the drivers via flags and to relay on-track inci-dents to track control. Flaggers are truly irreplaceable: Without them, the race doesn’t go on!
The Grand Prix Region currently hires Corner Workers for our events, but the quality of those workers is not consistent. The idea came up that, instead of hiring outside groups to do this, per-haps we should put together a team of GPX Corner Workers.
Bob and Karen Lewis are two GPX members who got the Corner Worker bug a couple of years ago. They were trained by the best as Flag and Grid workers, and have been staffing racing events like the Long Beach Grand Prix and venues like Laguna Seca, Auto Club Speedway and others ever since.
Bob and Karen would be willing to train a team of GPX members and their friends to be profes-sional level Flag and Grid workers.

Continuing a series of reviews of books dealing with the Porsches of the early days of PCA, this review is of a book, not contemporaneous with the founding of PCA (in 1955), but a rather personalized story about the cars that so excited the people who created the Porsche Club of America.
Denis Jenkinson was an automotive journalist/columnist, very well known in '50s-'60s England. In this country, Jenks is best known for his book The Rac-ing Driver(reviewed in 2011). Amongst the descriptive/instructional bits, The Racing Driver chronicles in fascinating detail Denis Jenkinson's participation in Srirling Moss' Mercedes 300SLR drive in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Their entry was historic, not only because they won the event, but because they initiated a new era in the technology of navigating a thousand mile race course. Less well known on this side of the pond is the fact that for ten years (and 250,000 miles), Denis' daily driver was his personal 356 Pre A, used to attend motor racing events all over the Continent.
Typical of books about early Porsches, PORSCHE 356 starts out with a synopsis of Ferdinand Porsche's early days, at least from the mid-30s Volkswagon on. Atypical is the inclusion of photographs of early Porsche AG staff members and some shots of early cars not seen elsewhere. Many pen and ink drawings of mechanical components are included, but are not unique to this particular book.
PORSCHE 356 stands out for its inclusion of a very compre-hensive collection of in-period photographs of 356s at work. Few are the posed factory PR variety. These tend to show Porsches on the street, in rallys and in what seem today to be very crude, unsophisticated, amateurish racing configu-ration, even when they were factory entries. Such was the character of a bygone era, very engrossingly presented.
The photographs in this book (by the author) are a refresh-ing change from the factory photos used in most 356 books. Throughout the book are interesting snapshots of the author's personal car, originally a 1955 Continental, custom-
ized over the years by the author/owner. The Continental is a very rare model whose conflict with Ford over trademark infringement nicely foretold the issue with Peugeot which caused the the 901 to become the 911. Both are fascinating stories of lawyer's influence on the mar-
ketplace, and are told in many other books, and not dealt with here.
The storyline is presented in personal, first person fashion, an example of the conversational writing style which made Jenks writing so popular as Con-tinental Corespondent for Motor Sport. While it discusses the history and evolution of the 356 (with an unusual number of photos of the Abarth Car-rera GT), much of the book is devoted to the author's personal experiences as he traveled with his 356, drove it hard and did have to perform some roadside repairs. It is very readable, refreshingly lacking the dry, statistical information
presented in many books about early Porsches. It also ignores the pre-VW experiences of Dr. Professor Ferdinand Porsche. Neither Lohner nor Mercedes-Benz appear in the index.
Included is the obligatory appendix of performance and di-mensional specifications of all models. This data set is quite comprehensive and detailed, even including the fact that the Carrera models had a turning circle 2 feet larger than the push rod models. The index, in contrast, is unusually terse.
PORSCHE 356 is hardbound with 135 8.7 x 7.5 inch pages. This is not a book for coffee table display, but one to defi-nitely enjoy reading. The type font is large, something that can be appreciated by those with vintage eyes. There are interesting black and white pictures scattered throughout the text, and an eight page insert of color pictures in the middle.
It is probably futile to ask for this book at your favorite bookseller, but as this is written, it is available on Amazon books for $11.66 and up.
