Page 2 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Today’s Readings
April 15, 2018 ~ Third Sunday of Easter
First Reading: Peter addresses the Israelites after he has cured a man who was crippled from birth. His words are accusatory,
letting the people know thay rejected the Holy and righteous One and put him to death. Peter’s words are also affirmative. In
them, Peter testifies that the god of their fathers is the same God who raised Jesus, the Holy and righteous One. Jesus’ suffering
fulfilled the message of the prophets; his Resurrection is God’s ultimate act of fidelity, fulfilling his promise of life to his people.
Paul calls the Israelites to repentance and conversion. Our call to change does not stop with Lent. It continues in the Easter
Season!
Responsorial Psalm 4 seems a rather somber hymn for the Easter Season. The psalm’s subdued nature reflects the psalm writer’s
confidence in god’s gentle strength and power. In the refrain, we ask the Lord to shine his face upon us. We want to see God
and to live in his image and likeness as he created us. We celebrate with the psalm writer the wonders God has done for us—
and, as Christians, especially the wonder of his Son’s Resurrection!
Second Reading: From the final chapter of John, from which last Sunday’s Gospel was taken, we move back to an earlier part of
the letter. Are we in Lent? You might ask this question as you read the three short verses of today’s Second Reading. Sin is
the obvious topic of the passage. We hope to remain faithful in love to god’s commandments. We hope not to sin, but the
author of the letter is realistic. God’s children will sin. Yet all is not lost. Jesus Christ with advocate for us with the Father.
Jesus Christ died as expiation for our sins and the sins of the whole world. For this, we are grateful.
Gospel: Jesus offers peace once again to the disciples, as we heard him offer last Sunday. The disciples do not believe it is he.
Jesus recognized that they are troubled, and invites them to see his hands and feet for themselves. Easter joy fills the disciples.
Jesus eats with them and breaks open the Scriptures for them. Their growth in faith continues. Ours must, too, in Easter Time
as we strengthen ourselves for lifelong witness to the Risen One.
Next week: Fourth Sunday of Easter: Acts 4:8-12; Psalm 118:1,8-9,21-23,26,29; 1 John 3:1-2 ; John 10:11-18

LITURGY CORNER…. . WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???
INRI – Atop a crucifix in a Catholic church or home is sometimes found the inscription INRI. The letters commonly
appear on a banner affixed to the uppermost quadrant of the cross above the head of the crucified Christ. Not all
crucifixes bear the letters, but many do.
The letters abbreviate the Latin inscription Jesus Nazaremus Rex Iudarorum, or “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.” According to John’s gos-
pel, Pontius Pilate ordered this inscription to give the name and hometown of the victim and to publicize the grounds for his execution. Soldiers
wrote the words in Hebrew, Latin and Greek—the languages of the Old Testament, the Roman government, and the New Testament. In Christian
art, the words are sometimes completely spelled out, but more commonly the Latin text is rendered as a simple acronym.
The chief priests of the Jews objected that Pilate should have written, “This man said, I am King of the Jews.” Pilate refused to change the text.
His reply became a chilling aphorism of authority in Latin: “Quod scripsi scripsi>“ “What I have written, I have written.” Thus Pilate would not
acknowledge the kingship of Jesus in the trial, but he proclaimed it publicly—if sarcastically—on the cross.
The inscription appears in the other gospels, each time with slightly different wording. Theses are the only known words written about Jesus during
his lifetime. To believers, they affirm the humanity and divine royalty of Jesus.
In Rome, the Church of the holy Cross in Jerusalem claims to have the relic of the original sign.
Catholic Charities will host a Longaberger Basket Bingo on Tuesday,
June 5th 2018 at the Fountain Mills Banquet Hall, 405 Porter Ave.,
Scottdale, PA. A light dinner will be served from 6-7PM. Bingo begins
at 7. Tickets are $25 and include 20 games of bingo, dinner and door
prizes. There will also be 50/50, basket raffles, dessert auction and
cash bar. Each Longaberger basket will be filled with wonderful house-
hold and beauty items as well as other fun treasures!
Call 724-837-1840 for tickets.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Tuesday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will
resume at St. Joseph’s shortly in a modified time
frame. Adoration will begin following the 8:30 AM
Mass for one hour and will conclude with Bene-
diction at k10:00 AM. This condensed period is necessitated
because of security concerns for our adorers and for our
church.
As we complete an ongoing security assessment at both St.
Joseph’s and St. John’s and implement additional security
procedures, the adoration period may by extended. Please
understand, the safety of our adorers is our primary concern.
