Brunson Elementary (Grades K – 5): Foundations in Engineering. Brunson uses science, tech-nology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to prepare students for the 21st century. Students are challenged to evaluate real-world problems and potential solutions through lessons that are project based. The school uses Engineering Is Elementary®, a nationwide curriculum that promotes K-12 STEM learning while connecting those subjects to literacy and social studies. Hanes Magnet Middle (Grades 6 – 8): STEM: Science, technology, engineering and math content & principals are integrated throughout the curriculum. Student learning is framed within real-world contexts and teachers include cross-disciplinary connections. Project Lead the Way (PLTW): Gateway to Technology, is a pre-engineering elective providing students with hands-on exposure to robotics, flight, and space, design and modeling, the science of technology, energy and the environment, innovators and makers, app creators, and the magic of electrons. Hanes also offers a broad range of STEM-related extracurricular activities and a wide range of arts-based electives. Atkins Academic & Technology High (Grades 9 – 12): Biotechnology, Engineering, Scientific Visualization, and Game Design. As an NC Model (science, technology, engineering, and math) STEM high school, Atkins offers STEM majors which give students firsthand experience in college fields of study. Atkins’ students participate in mentoring, job shadowing, and internship programs. A main focus is meeting the needs of gifted learners. Students earn varsity letters for many of the 20+ academic competition teams. Paisley IB Magnet (IB MYP Grades 6 – 10): International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Paisley, recognized as a Magnet Schools of America School of Excellence, is the only school in the District offering the IB MYP. IB, founded in 1968, works with more than 4000 schools in nearly 150 countries. Students are encouraged to be active learners, well-rounded individuals, and engaged citizens. The MYP is a solid preparation for students seeking the IB Diploma, following one of two paths. Mineral Springs Elementary (Grades K-5): Renzulli Academy of Arts and Technology. Joseph Renzulli, a child psychologist, suggested that a wider variety of talents should be identified and nurtured in children from all cultures and backgrounds. His “Schoolwide Enrichment Model” is premised on developing children’s full potential. Mineral Springs Middle (Grades 6 – 8): Performing Arts & Leadership. To educate students’ minds, bodies and creative spirits, MSM integrates the theories of Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences to help students discover and develop their individual talents. The gymnastics program – unique in the district – is led by the recipient of the 1990 and 1998 US Gymnastics Association Junior Gymnastics Coach of the Year. RJ Reynolds High (Grades 9 – 12): Arts for Academics. Reynolds provides opportunities for creativity, originality, and critical thinking by integrating the arts to support its diverse student body. Reynolds embraces its rich history and tradition of excellence while utilizing best practic-es, technology, and the state-adopted curriculum. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is home to more than 21 magnet programs which means our families have access to a variety of specialty programs. Magnet school programs offer students an opportunity to discover their talents and explore their interests while focusing on academic excellence. Families expect the very best for their children in a research-based, experiential, technologically-rich environment that includes an engaging community, authentic assessments, and hands-on learning. Magnet Application Process: Selection for a magnet school can be done online (see link on back cover), or at the selected school. Interested applicants must submit an application during the application period. A couple of programs require additional information (noted by school).

Selection into our magnet programs is competitive and based on either a randomized lottery or individual school eligibility factors (noted by school).

The Downtown School (Grades PreK – 8): Hands’ on Learning. The Downtown School’s location is central to the school’s focus on teaching students about the world around them. Community resources are built into instruction to emphasize active, exploratory learning. Students in the elementary program have the option of remaining for middle school. The school requires parents to volunteer an hour per week per child. Up to one-third are children of employees of a primary business partner, Reynolds American Inc. The rest of the students come from families who live or work in the central urban area of Winston-Salem. Tuition is charged for the preschool and extended-day. No transportation is provided.601 N. Moore Magnet Elementary (Grades K – 5): Eight Smarts. Moore, the longest-standing magnet school since1971, offers an innovative educational program by providing an environment where every student is pushed to excel. Students at Moore discover the different ways they know, understand and learn about the world. Their teachers tailor instruction to fit students’ “smarts” and help them develop their less-favored ways of learning. Moore was one of the first elementary schools in Forsyth County to embrace Dr. Howard Gardners’ theories of Multiple Intelligences.
