June 23,
OF ALL OF THOSE WHO WALKED WITH JESUS, it is Mary of Magdala, more commonly referred to as Mary Magdalene, who has most fully entered into the popular imag inat ion o f Western literary culture. From Jesus Christ Superstar to The Da Vinci Code, this disciple whom we know as a saint has been variously cast as a woman of ill repute … the girlfriend of Jesus … or his most intimate companion.
The truth is, little can be known with certainty about S a i n t M a r y Magdalene—but we do know that popular culture has it all wrong.
We see this Mary most vividly in the garden where Jesus w a s b u r i e d —
devastated, then j o yous be yond earthly experience w h e n s h e encounters the risen Christ. We follow her as she shares her amazing story with the other disciples, who conclude that she and the other women are talking nonsense.
And we honor her now as the Apostle to the Apostles—the first evangelist, sharing the news of the Resurrection.
More inside.
July 21, 2019
WHY A FEAST DAY
On the Solemnity of the Most
Sacred Heart of Jesus, June 3,
2016, the celebration of Saint
Mary Magdalene was elevated to
the rank of Feast.
This decision seeks to reflect
more deeply upon the dignity of
women, on the new
evangelization, and on the
greatness of the mystery of God’s
Mercy. Saint John Paul II paid
great attention not only to the
importance of women in the
mission of Christ and the Church,
but also and with special
emphasis on the particular role of
Mary of Magdala as the first
witness who saw the risen Christ,
and as the first messenger who
announced the Lord’s
Resurrection to the Apostles.
ON-GOING SIGNIFICANCE
The importance of this continues
today in the Church, as is evident
in the new evangelization, which
seeks to welcome all men and
women “of every race, people,
language and nation,” without
any distinction, to announce
to them the Good News of
the Gospel of Jesus Christ
while accompanying them on
their earthly pilgrimage, and
offering them the wonders of
God’s salvation.
Saint Mary Magdalene is an
example of a true and authentic
evangelizer, that is, an evangelist
who announces the central joyful
message of Easter.
It is true that ecclesial tradition in
the West, especially since the
time of Gregory the Great, has
identified Saint Mary Magdalene,
and the woman who anointed
Christ’s feet with perfume in the
house of Simon the Pharisee, and
the sister of Lazarus and Martha,
as one and the same person. This
interpretation continued to
influence western ecclesiastical
authors, Christian art, and
liturgical texts relative to
this saint.
What is certain is that Mary
Magdalene was part of the group
of Jesus’ disciples, she
accompanied him to the foot of
the Cross and, in the garden
where she met him at the tomb,
was the first “witness of Divine
Mercy” (Saint Gregory the Great).
The Gospel of John tells us that
Mary Magdalene wept because
she could not find the body of the
Lord, and that Jesus had mercy
on her by letting himself be
known as her Master, thus
transforming her tears into
paschal joy.
THE FIRST WITNESS
On the one hand, she has the
honor to be the first witness of
the Lord’s Resurrection, the first
who saw the empty tomb, and
the first to hear the truth about
his Resurrection.
Yet, there is more, as we see
precisely in the garden of the
Resurrection where the Lord says
to Mary, Noli me tangere (“Do not
cling to me”). This is an invitation
to enter into an experience of
faith that goes beyond
materialistic assumptions and the
human grasping after the divine
Mystery which is not simply
addressed to Mary but to the
entire Church.
This is an ecclesial moment! This
is an important lesson for every
disciple of Jesus Christ to neither
seek human securities nor the
vainglory of this world, but in
faith to seek the living and
risen Christ!
On the other hand, precisely
because she was an eyewitness
to the risen Christ, she was also
the first one to bear witness to
him before the Apostles. She
fulfils the command of the Risen
Lord: “Go to my brethren and say
to them, I am ascending to my
Father and your Father, to my
God and your God.”
APOSTLE TO THE APOSTLES
Mary Magdalene went and
announced to the disciples, “I
have seen the Lord,” and she told
them that he had said these
things to her. Thus, as already
indicated she becomes an
evangelist, that is a messenger
who announces the Good News of
the Lord’s resurrection or, as
Saint Thomas Aquinas say, she
becomes the apostolorum
apostola (“apostle to the
apostles”) because she
announces to the Apostles what
in turn they will announce to the
whole world.
It was with good reason that the
Angelic Doctor applied this term
to Mary of Magdala, for she is the
witness to the risen Christ and
announces the message of the
Lord’s Resurrection just like the
rest of the Apostles. For this
reason it is right that the liturgical
celebration of this woman should
have the same rank of Feast as
that given to the celebration of
the Apostles in the General
Roman Calendar and that the
special mission of this woman
should be underlined, she who is
an example and model for all
women in the Church.

EXCEPT FOR the mother of
Jesus, no woman is more
honored in the Bible than Mary
Magdalene, being mentioned in
all four Gospels. She was part of
a group of women who provided
for Jesus and the Apostles and
one of the few who remained by
the cross with His mother. She
was granted the privilege of
being the first witness of the
Resurrection, becoming the
“Apostle to the Apostles.”
She was also, according to
Luke 8:2, one “from who seven
demons had gone out.” In her
time that may have meant what
we now term mental illness,
depression, or anxiety. It may
have been an addiction or
emotional trauma. Whatever it
was, it most likely affected her
daily life, kept her from healthy
relationships, and prevented her
from knowing that she was truly
loved by God.
When Jesus met Mary, we
imagine that He wanted her to
know that she was made in
God’s image and, simply because
of that, she was deeply loved.
Mary’s encounter with Jesus
changed her life forever—she
picked up everything and
followed Him. Transformed by
grace, now she wanted to boldly
share that with others.
Even though meeting Jesus
had truly renewed her life, this
did not mean that it would be
without its struggles. After all, it
is because of this personal
encounter and its healing grace
that Mary eventually finds herself
at the foot of the cross, watching
the man who had changed her
life suffer and die.
Three days later, weeping in
front of an empty tomb, Mary
has forgotten the promise Jesus
made to rebuild the temple. She
is blinded by her grief, perhaps
her own sense of having failed
her dear friend, her feelings of
helplessness, and the deep pain
and trauma of this loss.
Then Jesus speaks her name:
“Mary!” What joy must have
filled Mary’s heart as she ran to
the disciples proclaiming, “I have
seen the Lord!” And what joy
there is for us that Jesus knows
us intimately as well. He sees
our disappointments and our
suffering, reaches out to rescue
us from our demons, and gently
and lovingly calls us by name to
follow after Him.
How often do we go through
life blinded by our everyday
struggles, worries or fears? Saint
Mary Magdalene can be our
model. In humility, she turned to
Jesus for healing. She learned to
have faith and trust in the
constant presence of God as she
followed Jesus as a disciple. She
persevered, remaining at the
tomb, seeking the One she could
not find. She became an apostle
of the greatest hope, proclaiming
the Resurrection with her life.
Her Feast Day is July 22. She is
the patroness of converts,
contemplative life, and women.
Mary Magdalene is a beautiful
example of God's mercy and
grace. Pope Benedict XVI said of
her: “A disciple of Christ is one
who, in the experience of human
weakness, has had the humility
to ask for His help, has been
healed by Him and has set out
following closely after Him,
becoming a witness of the power
of His merciful love that is
stronger than sin and death.”
Mary Magdalene, who was at
the mercy of those demons
before encountering Jesus,
experienced deep conversion
that changed her life forever. We
can turn to her to see how
strength and hope can be found
when we allow ourselves to live
out this same experience. Listen
to Jesus as He calls you by
name, filling your heart with joy.
Believe that He can change your
life forever. Then like Saint Mary
Magdalene you too will be able to
proclaim—
“I have seen the Lord!”
Questions for Reflection
• What is it that might be keeping me from knowing I am truly loved by God?
• Can I humbly ask the Lord for help, turning over my personal demons to Him?
• Am I willing to allow Jesus to change my life, and set me on a new path—
knowing He will change my life forever?
• How can I proclaim the Resurrection today?
• Where have I seen the Lord?

YOUTH MISSION TRIP Our Youth Missions
Team returned this past Saturday from their
week of service in West Virginia. The group
of 12 teens and 4 chaperones helped to
upgrade the exterior of two mobile homes.
Not only did they spend time working on
their job sites, but they also participated in
daily devotions and social activities with the
other teens—70 in all! The team will be
sharing more about their experience with the
parish. The team was overwhelmed by the
support and encouragement of the parish,
and grateful for the special Prayer Team that
supported them during their service week.

BECOMING
CATHOLIC
Do you have a
spouse who is
not Catholic—
or are you
married to a
Catholic and
would like to
learn more
about the faith
of the person you love? Have you been quietly
attending Masses on your own and desire to
know more about what it means to be a
Catholic Christian? Do you have a friend or
relative who’s interested in the Catholic
Church? The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation
of Adults) is the process through which adults
become members of the Catholic Church—but
it’s also a low-key way to learn about
Catholicism without the expectation of any
commitment. This process will begin here
again this fall. To learn more or register for
RCIA, contact Pastoral Assistant Donna
Nebistinsky, 717-697-6929, [email protected].
SENIOR LUNCHEON & MOVIE THIS WEEK The next feature at our regular
monthly luncheon series is A Light in Darkness, the third film in the God’s Not
Dead series: Pastor Dave responds to the tragedy of his church being burned
down. Please contact Jeannie, 717-737-8600, or Colleen, 717-766-2396, by noon
this Monday to register. Luncheon begins Thursday, July 25, at 11 am.
DIVORCED? HURTING? Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish is offering the
divorce support program, Recovering from Divorce for Catholics. The 13-week
program will start Wednesday, September 4, and run through Wednesday,
December 4, from 7:15 to 8:30 pm. Some of the topics covered
include: grieving, fear, anger, dealing with your former spouse, helping your
kids cope, the power of your faith to heal, and being single again. This
program is for Catholics who are going through a divorce or are struggling with
life after divorce. The cost of the program is $55. Scholarships are available.
Questions? Contact Cindy Nelson, 717-439-7691, [email protected].
More information will be forthcoming on how to register.

LOURDESHOUSE MINISTRY The Knights of Columbus are inviting other
parishioners to join them in an ongoing ministry of service to the women in
residence at the Catholic Charities home—providing lunch once a month.
Residents are typically single women with no family support, including
homeless women and women leaving prison. It is important that the moms
have nutritious food in the midst of their busy schedules—medical
appointments, parenting classes, and case management and counseling
services to address barriers to self-sufficiency. Our Knights have a team in
place to assist with preparing your first luncheon and suggest recommended
items. You won’t be on your own. The team will escort you to Lourdeshouse
when you take your prepared meals to the moms. Lourdeshouse is the only
facility in the Harrisburg area that provides specialized, comprehensive
maternity care and residential services to pregnant women and young
mothers in need. For information or to volunteer, contact Rick Mowery,
[email protected], 717-512-9645, or George Essip, 717-796-1949,
BEGINNING IN SEPTEMBER, our Nursery—now conveniently located in the
Seton Center—could use some volunteers for coverage during 9 o’clock Mass
on Sundays. Won’t you consider becoming a volunteer once a month? Please
contact Tracy Kovaleski, [email protected], or Patty Wargo,
[email protected], if you are able to assist in this wonderful ministry. A
Youth Protection clearance is needed, but we can help you out with that—we
understand the process and will walk you through it. Start early so there’s no
pressure to be ready by September!
