NOVEMBER 29, 2020 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Reflections : I was at the grocery store this evening and I’m going through checkout. I only had a few
things and as the young man behind the register was dragging my items across the little scanner
beepy thingy, I went to hand him my debit card. I must’ve held my card out for a good 8 seconds or
so, and he kinda looked at me, and I was looking at him, wondering why he wasn’t taking my pay-
ment. Then he said,
‘Oh…so, if you could just slide your card through the pin pad…’
It hadn’t occurred to me that it’d been years since we physically handed our credit card to a cashier and not
swiped it through the pin pad ourselves. And yet, I just stood there in a daze, like some automaton with my
arm stretched out towards this kid, almost begging him to take my card.
‘I’m sorry,’ I said, ‘I don’t know what I was thinking.’
‘It’s ok,’ he said, ‘We’re all a little tired right now.’
Yes, we are.
He continued, ‘So, I have this laundry chute in my room, and like, the other day, I went to bring my cereal
bowl down to the kitchen, but ended up putting my clothes in the sink.’
Now, under normal circumstances, I might have said, ‘Well, at least you didn’t dump your Lucky Charms
down the laundry chute.’ ba dum Pum! ‘Thank you Whitinsville, good night!’
But I didn’t say that. These aren’t normal circumstances. We’re all a little tired right now.
This weekend marks the beginning of Advent, and our message series at St Patrick’s this Advent will
be Make Room.
Advent is a time of preparation, a time to, as the hymn says,
Make yourselves faire as ye are able,
trim the hearth and set the table.
Advent offers us a chance to let Christ be re-born in our hearts. Another opportunity to share in the
joys and hopes that burst into our world the moment that Mary’s son took his first breath. Advent is a time to
open our hearts, as best we can, and let in God’s endless and unconditional love for us, which we can see all
around us at this time of year, as a baby lying in a manger.
But, before we get too deep into Advent, and before Fr Tomasz and Deacon Chris begin to guide us
through our Make Room message series, perhaps it’s a good time to take a step back and take a deep
breath. Where are we at this time? How are we? This has been an extra-ordinary year for everyone. There
have been unforgettable events that I’ve already forgotten because they were replaced by even more unfor-
gettable events. As I walk around these days, I see a similar look on some faces, a look that asks ‘Why did I
just do or say that weird thing I just did or said?’
And you know what?
It’s ok. It really is ok.
As a wise old sage disguised as a teenaged grocery cashier once told me,
‘We’re all a little tired right now.’
Yes, we are. At least many of us are.
So, maybe let’s just sit with that. If you’re feeling tired or out of sorts lately, and if you’ve just dumped a bowl
of Cheerios down the laundry chute and put your dirty clothes in the sink, it’s ok. You’re not alone. Lots of us
are doing weird stuff too. Maybe tell a friend about it. Maybe laugh about it. Maybe cry about it. It’s ok.
Wherever you are, however you feel. Maybe just be for right now.
And when you come to church or tune in to watch our masses livestream, take heart in the fact that God wel-
comes us to His table just as we are.

We may not all be together at St Patrick’s at Christmas, but we can all be part of St. Patricks at Christmas.
There will be a Christmas tree outside the Parish Center right after
Thanksgiving weekend.
Make a Wreath or create an Ornament that shows who you or your family are and be part of the holiday spirit.
Attach your wreath to the fence and put your ornament on the tree.

Our Lady of the Valley Regional School Update
Welcome to the OLV update, a biweekly entry to your parish bulletin. Here we will post
news, updates and information regarding Our Lady of the Valley Regional School, the won-
derful Catholic elementary school in the Blackstone Valley, sponsored and supported by Good Shepherd
Parish, St. Mary Parish, St. Patrick Parish and St. Peter Parish. We are blessed to have your prayers and
support.
At Our Lady of the Valley, we have recently completed our first quarter, and grade reports along with the
results of our first round of standardized testing have been sent to families. We are very proud of our teachers
and students for what they have accomplished during these challenging times. We are blessed to have been
able to reach the Thanksgiving holiday in outstanding fashion, and we are thankful for the dedication of our
faculty, staff, students and families as we have adhered to our reopening plan and corona virus guidelines
and protocols. This year has been a great success so far.
We are also very proud to be entering the final fundraising phase of our drive to build The Grace Center, a
gymnasium and classroom addition dedicated to the memory of Grace Rett, an OLV alumna who passed
away last year after a motor vehicle accident while on a training trip with her Holy Cross women's crew team.
This building addition will enable us to improve all of our faith based academic, athletic and artistic programs
by providing much needed space for our growing school community.
In December, we will hold a virtual fundraising event to commemorate Grace's indoor rowing world record
set last year. From December 19th through 21st, we will sponsor the Grace to the Finish, a sixty-two hour and
three second drive matching the duration of Grace's world record performance. Please consider making a gift
towards this wonderful initiative during this time. More information will be provided through your bulletin and
Flocknotes, and you can also keep informed of this and other school happenings through our Facebook page
at Our Lady of the Valley Regional School.

If you plan to attend, remember to sign up for our Sunday Masses in advance by going to mystpatricks.com home page, find the sign up and click on it. Please wear a mask, use hand sanitizer and follow the directions when you get to church.
For those who are 65+, have health conditions or don’t feel comfortable coming back to Mass just yet, that is also fine. The suspension of the obligation to come to church continues to be in effect. Just stay home.

When the site opens, scroll down to the bottom and you will see the date’s Mass, for example, “All Saints’ Day
Mass,” click on it and it will start the streaming.
Note: If it has not started yet, stay “tuned in” because it will come on when the live stream starts.
