RESPECT LIFE Abortion is not, and never has been, simply an

“issue.” It is, rather, the most radical break with civilization that

history has ever seen. The legal reason this is true becomes

clearer when we realize that Roe vs. Wade which legalized abortion

throughout all nine months of pregnancy for any reason or no rea-

son never denied that the unborn child is a child. The Court in-

stead declared that this question was beyond the competency to

answer. Had the Court said, “We have concluded that the unborn

are definitely not human, and therefore we can legalize abortion,

“at least it would have preserved the principle that government

cannot authorize the destruction of the innocent. But

the Court failed to do that. Instead, the Court asserted

that although unborn children may well be human be-

ings, government can authorize their destruction any-

way. ~Priests for Life

There is a request for Prayer Shawls for residents of James

Square and other nursing homes. If you are interested in helping

with this endeavor, or if you would like to donate some yarn for the

shawls, please call Mary Morley at 492-3102.

On Sunday afternoon, an envelope was left on the sacristy counter

at St. Charles. There was a note that read, “Hi we are the un-

knowns. We raised $7 dollars for the church. Use it wisely. “

Your friends, the Unknowns.

Thank you for your generosity. We will! The children from the

Brady Faith Center here for Vacation Bible School will be treated to

Last Thursday, the skies looked threatening all day and we really needed rain, but we prayed to please keep it from raining between 5:30 and 7:30 in the evening. The reason being that a small army of volunteers including our YIM Youth in Ministry members, St. Charles Food Pantry volunteers, Parish Staff and parents of our teens traveled down to the Catholic Charities Men’s Night Shelter (formerly known as the Oxford Inn) to host a backyard barbeque. It was hot, really hot and sunny and not an inch of shade to be had. We all had our jobs to do and everyone got to work preparing, sorting, pouring, grilling and turning the Tallman Street parking lot into a picnic setting. Before we started, we all gathered around the grill and said a prayer of thanksgiving and we prayed for Deacon Vanelli and gave thanks for all the years he spent visit-ing and bringing sandwiches to the Oxford Inn. Thanks to our master grillers, Don Zawacki and Paul Payne, we served over 120 hamburgers and 20 lbs. of German hotdogs. The BBQ included 60 lbs. of salt potatoes, watermelon, lemonade, chips, cookies, bananas and chocolate bars!! The men of the shel-ter were just thrilled with the meal and many of them came back for seconds and we think a couple had thirds! We were surprised when Fr. Pater Major stopped down to visit and join us for dinner. We also met the Emmaus Minis-try from St. James Church, they were there to just stop in and visit. They told us that they have never seen the men so happy and content, they even stayed to share a picnic dinner with all of us. It was just the perfect blend of Church and community. We thank everyone who helped, cooked, served and drove, we especially want to thank our St. Charles Food Pantry and St. Ann’s Pantry for providing all the food. Before we all left, I introduced the teens to one of our volunteers and asked if they could guess how old she was – they giggled and one of the boys said “ Oh, she looks like 40!”. Well, they met Rosemary Monti-cello, a mere 95 years young, who stood for two hours and stuffed burgers into buns without a word of complaint. There was a gasp and then the few of us ready to complain about the heat, the sun, our feet just smiled and said “We want to be you when we grow up”. This was our third annual BBQ and honestly the best yet… may God bless the men who stay at the Night Shelter and those individuals who work and

serve there.
