But forty days later, today, with his disciples and Apostles gathered around him, Jesus mysteriously ascended back into heaven, back to his Father's side, back to where he had come from at the moment of the incarnation. And today we celebrate that. But shouldn't we mourn it instead? Shouldn't we sad that he is no longer with us? Doesn't it seem that he has abandoned us? Not at all. : If Jesus had not ascended into heaven, we would not be able to hope for heaven ourselves. The ascension is the direct source of our hope. It means that we are never alone. Years ago, a Catholic missionary was preaching in the square of a village in North India. As he finished, a Muslim gentleman came up and said: "You must admit we have one thing you have not, and it is better than anything you have." The missionary smiled and said, "I should be pleased to hear what it is." The Muslim went on, "You know, that when we go to Mecca we find at least a coffin. But when you Christians go to Jerusalem, your Mecca, you find nothing but an empty grave." The Missionary replied, "Ah ha! But that's just it, and it makes all the difference. Mohammad, the founder of Islam, is dead, and he is in his coffin. But our Leader has risen from the dead and returned to heaven." As Christians, we don't just believe in a philosophy or a theology. As Christians, we believe in a person, a Savior, a God who is alive and who has brought our own human nature into heaven, so that we can have a hope that is not just wishful thinking, but a dream guaranteed to come true. We do not have to wish upon a star; we pray to the One who made the stars. Jesus has gone into heaven, not to abandon us, but to be our hope: he has led the way. One of life's most persistent temptations is to be a hypocrite. Hypocrites say one thing and do another thing. There are two brands of hypocrites. The first kind of hypocrites make sure that they act and look like decent Christians when other people are watching, but they give in to their self-centered tendencies when they are alone. The second kind do the contrary. When they are alone, they live like true Christians, but when they are around other people, at work, at school, or at the club, they hide their faith and convictions. All of us are tempted in both these ways. Whenever we give in to the temptation, we sadden our Lord, we weaken the Church, and we tear apart our own soul. The longer our hypocrisy goes unchecked, the more divided we become on the inside. Soon we are following in the steps of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, instead of in the steps of Christ, destroying ourselves and wounding those around us. The Ascension saves us from hypocrisy. Because of the Ascension, we know that Jesus, our Lord and Savior, our one truly trustworthy friend, is always with us and watching over us. He is in our hearts when we are alone, ready to give us strength to live with integrity and self-mastery. He is at our side when we are surrounded by other people, ready to encourage us to live with sincerity and humility. This is what he meant when he said, "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." May God bless you. Fr. Dan

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners,

Today we do a strange thing: we celebrate our Savior's departure from earth. He became man, born on Christmas, for 30 years he lived a hidden life in Nazareth, sharing the struggles of us all. For 3 years he travelled Israel preaching the gospel, doing miracles, and training his 12 Apostles. Then, when his work was finished, he

redeemed fallen humanity: reversed Original Sin through his sacrificial passion and death. Finally, to prove the trustworthiness of his teaching and sacrifice, he rose from the dead and appeared to his followers multiple times.

But when you Christians go to Jerusalem, your Mecca, you find nothing but an empty grave." The Missionary replied, "Ah ha!

founder of Islam, is dead, and he is in his coffin. But our Leader has

risen from the dead and returned to heaven."

HISTORY OF THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD - The reality of Christ's Ascension is so important that the creeds (the basic statements of belief) of Christianity all affirm, in the words of the Apostles' Creed, that "He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead." The denial of the Ascension is as grave a departure from Christian teaching as is denial of Christ's Resurrection. Christ's bodily Ascension foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming mankind, Christ not only offered salvation to our souls but began the restoration of the material world itself to the glory that God intended before Adam's fall. The Feast of the Ascension marks the beginning of the first novena, or nine days of prayer. Before His Ascension, Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit to His apostles. Their prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which began on Ascension Thursday, ended with the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, ten days later. The Ascension of Our Lord, which occurred 40 days after Jesus Christ rose from the dead-on Easter, is the final act of our redemption that Christ began on Good Friday. On this day, the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven (Luke 24:51; Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9-11).
