Solitude, a great resort to visit but a miserable destination to stay.

Whereas loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self. Solitude is being alone, well aware of the fullness of your own presence

rather than the absence of others.

Language... has created the word “solitary” to express the pain of being alone and the glory of being alone.

EDITOR’S Travel PadPrincess Diana’s Sanctuary in Barbuda

The curtains have come down on the Royal Wedding and we wish the couple the very best. Here’s hoping that the cameras will soon be switched off allowing them to pursue their “happily ever after” with some measure of privacy.

Barbuda became a sanctuary for Princess Diana in her quest to find happiness during some of her darkest moments. Former employees of the K Club (now closed) recount her languid days of relaxation and “Pamper Diana Days,” a self-coined phrased that described special spa treatments using local herbs blended exclusively for her. She would take long walks along the pink sand beach, gathering sea shells, or stopping to watch the sunsets.

The healing waters of Barbuda and its friendly people seemed to help the Princess refresh and rebound from the pressures of her very public life. The Princess spent her last family vacation with her sons, William and Harry, in Barbuda in April 1997 and very little has changed along the stretch of beach that she enjoyed.

Princess Diana’s 50th Birthday will be celebrated with a tribute to her legacy as a royal humanitarian who inspired many lives. The essence of the “People’s Princess” will be captured in the renaming of Princess Diana Beach on July 1. This will become a marker that symbolizes Diana’s special connection to Barbuda, a place where she found a sense of balance and inner peace.

Ever so often, women in particular, seek moments of solitude, to reset our inner clocks to a more relaxed tempo and balance how much of ourselves we are required to give each day. Solitude is the accomplishment of being alone, luxuriously immersed in our own choices.

This Mother’s Day, recommend Antigua and Barbuda as a retreat for a woman whose life could use a recharge.

Five Words that Signal the Need for a Mental Break-------------------------------------------Power Down and Unplug on an Antigua and Barbuda Getaway

Padmobile - With your busy schedule your car doubles as your home and anything that you would find in a survival kit, from a change of clothes, shoes, food items, water or extra toiletries.

Storebucks – This is instant coffee stored in your desk drawer, just in case you forget to stop and get coffee for the weekly breakfast meeting, when it’s your turn.

MyPod - You get carried away listening to music so loudly that you are literally in your own world, oblivious that everyone in the supermarket can hear you.

Dress Code Dysfunction -The embarrassing memory when you paired black blazer with navy trousers. Same designer but mismatched colors! But what do you expect at 6am when light casts a shadow that is difficult on the eye

Lunner The pressures of the day mean that you take a late lunch/early dinner almost every day. Arguably, you feel that this is just as acceptable as taking Brunch!

On the Eve of the Royal Wedding, Antigua and Barbuda hosted an event to announce the naming of the Princess Diana Beach on July 1, on what would have been her 50th Birthday. The Beach will become an attraction and landmark to honor the humanitarian legacy of one of the destination’s most celebrated guests.

“We hold an important piece of this puzzle, since Barbuda was one of the last places where

William vacationed with his mother Princess Diana, before her untimely passing,” said Derede Samuel Whitlock, US Director. “We see the Princess’ repeat visits as the “royal stamp of approval” for the island and the hospitality of its people.

The US Team used this opportunity to be part of a historic celebration and to build on the “pre-Wedding” excitement by highlighting Antigua and Barbuda’s strong position as a premier

destination for Weddings and Honeymoons. Two models played the part of “Will and Kate” and engaged the crowd as they cut the cake and made a toast to the legacy of Princess Diana. Legendary singer, Ambassador Rupert “Baba” Blaize performed his new single, a tribute to Princess Diana, “Return to Me,” which was well received by the audience.

Antigua and Barbuda’s beaches and school uniforms held some fascination for the winner of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Youth Essay Writing Contest, 12-year-old Benjamin McDonald of Canada. CTO launched the essay contest in Canada last October to help promote youth literacy and the Caribbean region.

As part of his prize trip, Benjamin and his mother Kathy Paris

McDonald spent three days in Antigua at Jolly Beach Resort & Spa. The youngster visited Bolans and TN Kirnon Primary Schools and read his winning essay entitled “The History and Origin of Trinidad’s Carnival and its relevance in today’s world.” Benjamin also participated in an interactive radio programme on local OBSERVER Radio called “Our House.”

Hermitage Bay------------------------ The Spa at Hermitage Bay has added a new springtime facial on the garden spa menu. In addition to the Island Time treatment that blends fresh aloe, coconuts, basil, eucalyptus, and mint into a gentle body scrub and massage, the Island ‘Spring’ Time treatment also features fresh organic produce. Before this 90-minute facial begins, guests can sip warm lemongrass tea, freshly picked from the resort’s organic garden. The first course of treatment is a macadamia, almond, and rosemary blend that cleanses the pores. A gentle exfoliation of milled oats and nutmeg powder suspended in pure rose-distilled water tones the skin. The final topping is a blended mask using coconut jelly, sour sop pulp, and aloe. Once applied it hydrates and nurtures the skin, leaving it firm and aglow.

Organic Treatments begin at 180USD and spa experiences can be enjoyed either in the Garden Spa or in the privacy of a Pool Suite or Beachfront Cottage.

F r o m the destination’s British naval history has emerged an impressive culture of sailing that gives the destination cachet. The rugged shoreline that offered defense and protection during major battles, has become a haven for luxurious vessels that come every year for Antigua Sailing Week.

Sailing has a therapeutic way of integrating relaxation and adventure. The soothing Trade Winds and majestic views of inlets along the shore create a maze that often evokes deep thought and introspection. Race season in Antigua brings together the adventure of the seas, nautical vibe of the island and the competitive spirit of sea mavens, who command scores of boats that dot the

shoreline, almost in solar

system formation. As culture vulture yachtsmen prepare

for rugged expeditions at sea, they are methodical in their preparations, because while on board its all about business. Once the sun goes down, they alight to party and revel in the charm of English Harbor, the center of sail activity where the Regatta began 44 years ago. Competitive sailors, adventure seekers and spectators all come together to experience the thrill of shore activities.

Antigua Sailing Week, the Caribbean’s longest running and best-known regatta is the grand finale of the Caribbean yacht racing season. International Dragons and RS Elite dinghies

are available for charter at very competitive rates, allowing sailing aficionados of different levels to join in the fun at the Caribbean’s most famous regatta. www.sailingweek.com

For adventurous non-sailors, Race Season can be a transformative experience. Ondeck, offers sailing lessons and an opportunity to see the entire race, from start to finish. “Chase the Race,” offers a relaxing adventure and is the ultimate spectator sport on island. THE BUZZBACK | DESTINATION SPOTLIGHT

Rosmac | Herb Garden Tourism Officer, Sandra Reid caught up with Rosalind Simon at Rosmac Gardens in Johnson’s Point. This retired educator has created a retreat on the south western side of Antigua. The self-described “Jackie of All Trades” and author of God’s Remedies Around Us (2005, Antigua), is a local manufacturer of natural herbal products, but does not consider herself a herbalist. On this unique interactive garden tour, visitors learn how herbs can treat almost every ailment, from mosquito bites to hypertension. With her natural preparations for hair care, skin care and weight control and a wealth of experience and knowledge, Rosmac Gardens is a “must see” for visitors to learn more about local herbs and remedies.

SR: How long have you been a herbalist?

RM: Am I? My parents worked a small herbal garden as a sideline and I just followed suit.

SR: I think of herbalists as “folk healers.” My grandmother would put a piece of onion on a cut to stop the bleeding or give us senna or castor oil every month to “kill” worms.

RM: Yes. Many of the older folks have passed on without sharing this information with the next generation. They knew how to use herbs and potions- vermicides and laxatives - for medicines.

SR: How has the business changed over the years?

RM: It is no longer just a backyard business. More people are experimenting with oils and ointments to treat sinus, poor circulation,

hair loss and insect bites. This has led to a demand for herbal products in hotels and a growing local market for natural remedies.

SR: In the US the FDA warns about drinking herbal teas and using herbal supplements. So there may be concerns about local herbal medicines or supplements? How do you respond to this negative media?

RM: The FDA has an axe to grind and is influenced by multi-million drug companies who remove the active ingredients from herbs to make drugs. They remove valuable properties that are very important for our bodies and we do not get the full benefits as when using the natural plant. We have to continually remind and educate that God created herbs for man to use in its natural state.

SR: What makes Rosmac Gardens a unique tour?

RM: It is interactive and informative and everyone gets involved. The peaceful setting with butterflies and bees, appeals to all of the senses as visitors get to see, smell, taste, touch and hear about unique herbs in Antigua. All of my products are on display.

SR: What are your five top herbs and tell us why they made the list?

RM: Bay Leaf (Christmas Bush) Used to flavor cereal or as tea for many ailments. Mauby (Sabonin) used as soap or mixed with spices to make an erotic “man’s drink.” Neem – Antiseptic/Antifungal, insecticidal properties, very good for mosquito bites. Tumeric Leaf, is a powerful antioxidant. Castor Leaf, a natural emollient for the skin, or as a hair softener or for minor constipation and ringworms.

SR: What is the one thing

Page 15: Antigua and Barbuda Buzz - May, 2011

that most persons “must have” when they visit your garden?

RM: Money (chuckles). They see so many amazing products that they all want. They feel motivated to get them to improve their health. The natural lip balm is a hot item. It comes in many flavors such as peppermint, passion fruit, guava, chocolate. Product prices range from US$1 to US$30. This is the only place where you can get a cup of “Five-Blend” Tea.

SR: On a recent tour, Travel Agents raved about your “Mosquito Treatment”. Are there plans to make it available internationally?

RM: Yes. That’s all I am saying.

SR: How are you able to meet the customers needs when doing business from a distance?

RM: I am in the process of moving from a partial to full website. Plans are in the work.

SR: What brings you the greatest joy on this tour?

RM: Seeing people get help for whatever ailments they have using my products. It blesses my heart.

Some natural foods when picked from the garden can enhance skin quality, especially during those sunny days at the beach, when the skin is under attack from UV rays. Here are some nutritious foods found in many backyards in Antigua and Barbuda that are recommended to keep your skin hydrated and aglow, long after your island retreat.

“At the LA Times Travel Show consumers were asking and looking around for the yellow Antigua and Barbuda bags. The color really stood out and it was a good kick-off for Spring. That Sunday it stormed and I think the bag kind of brightened up a lot of folks’ world…… I carry my Antigua bag to the grocery store and it always attracts attention. It reminds me of your national fruit the black pineapple.”
