FEATURES

Award winning actor Anthony Mackie is enjoying a phenomenal year -- currently starring opposite Matt Damon and Emily in the movie Adjustment Bureau—but he took time off his publicity tour to participate in a local cultural expedition organized by the Ministry of Tourism. 2011 has been designated by the United Nations as The International Year of People of African Descent (IYPAD). Antigua and Barbuda will also observe its 30th Anniversary of Independence on Nov, 1, and the celebration is being positioned as the reunion event for all modern descendants of Africa. A

promotion aimed at highlighting the destination’s modern, historical and cultural connections to African traditions and customs will promote packages that offer cultural experiences at off peak discounts. Mackie enjoyed a week of R & R at Carlisle Bay and a rare opportunity to see democracy “island style” at a sitting of Antigua and Barbuda’s Parliament. He also visited the Frigate Bird Sanctuary in Barbuda, Shirley Heights and Mount Obama Park and Monument , where he planted a mango tree with Prime Minister Hon. Baldwin Spencer.

Nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards for his role in The Hurt Locker, Mackie is on the cover of the March issue of Vanity Fair, with a group of actors dubbed “The Young and Beautiful.” Mackie is already making plans to return to Antigua and Barbuda and tourism offi cials anticipate that the actor will become a BRAND Ambassador for the destination.

It was a lovely card signed by Queen Elizabeth II and she wished us a Happy Anniversary,” said Beryl. When asked about the secret to a marriage lasting six decades, Mrs. Napper said, “Patience and love are crucial. He still makes me tea at 7am daily and he gives me flowers regularly.” The Nappers have no intention of slowing down as long as their good health persists.“We know that Antigua has quite a few centenarians and we are motivated to reach that pinnacle,” commented Mr. Napper.
