A music professor and band director that dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to students at Union College was honored by alumni during Homecoming weekend.

During the 2015 Homecoming celebration, Union alumni gathered in the music room of the fine arts building to share stories and remembrances of Dr. Allan Green. A brief ceremony was also held to unveil a plaque honoring Green’s legacy. Green served Union’s music program from 1961 until retirement in 1999.

“We are gathered here to honor someone very special,” said Jessica Terry Bergman, Union’s outgoing Vice-President for Advancement. “Our faculty at Union are great at impacting lives of students in ways that only faculty at small schools can.”

Don Jones ’79, a member of the Union College Board of Trustees, said Dr. Green was always accessible to students and served students in capacities beyond the classroom. Jones said Green coached tennis and spent free time playing bridge with band members in the student center. He also opened his family home to students during difficult times, like when the flood of 1977 emptied Union’s campus.

“Even after he retired, he supported Union financially and was very good to Union for a very long time,” Jones said. “Dr. Green is a great example of why small, liberal arts schools are so important.”

Jones said the memorial to Green was developed by former students, including Roberta Taylor ’79, who passed away prior to the unveiling. It was Taylor that led the fundraising effort to honor Green and support the re-emergence of Union’s band program; now led by Douglas Olenik.

“It is great to be part of a music program that had such a huge impact on so many people,” said Olenik.

Olenik told those gathered at the ceremony that he currently has 24 students enrolled in the renewed band program. Green’s development fund has helped Olenik purchase instruments and sheet music for students.

Olenik thanked the group for their support and detailed his vision for the program.

“We have the opportunity to be the face of change in the arts community throughout eastern Kentucky. Union should be the example other schools look up to,” he said.

The day was special in other ways for Olenik and the Union music program. The Homecoming event featured the Bulldog Marching Band taking the field for the first time in 2015. The band performed the National Anthem and the Union “fight song” for the audience, which included several music alumni from the ceremony earlier that day

“We just want to share our music with others and teach others that want to learn

music,” Olenik said. “We want this program to continue to embody what Dr. Green and others understood; that we are here to make music for this school and our community.”

LONG-TIME BAND DIRECTOR HONORED BY UNION FAMILY

Doug Olenik, Union College’s Band Director, and student Miranda Hamilton display the new band uniforms for college alumni during Homecoming 2015. Olenik is reviving a band program once renowned for its students and faculty, including 2015 Homecoming honoree Dr. Allan Green.

In 1960, Douglas Lee and Jane Bassett Minton Blair made a donation to Union College, the first of what would become many. Their first gift of $250 helped to create an athletic scholarship for the swim team, but it also established a lifelong dedication to the institution the Blair family carries forth to this day.

Douglas Blair was born in Virginia in 1917 to Lee and Olive Strickland Brown. He was adopted at the age of ten by relatives living in Harlan County, Sarah Jane and John Henry Blair, due to grave illness in his birth family. Doug’s father, John Henry, was sheriff of Harlan County during the infamous Harlan County War – a series of violent confrontations between union organizers and coal companies – which served as the younger Blair’s introduction to the coal business. It was reported that Doug’s first “coal job” was looking under his father’s car for dynamite.Jane Bassett Minton was born in

1920 in Barbourville to Robert Bassett Minton and Myrtle Cole Minton. Jane’s family story begins with the founding of The Minton Hickory Mill, a lucrative manufacturing business built around the local timber industry. The business initially manufactured tire spokes, but progressed to manufacture other goods such as ladder rungs, broom and mop handles, drum sticks, walking canes and hickory shafts for golf clubs.

Legendary golfer Bobby Jones used the Minton shafts when he won golf’s grand slam in 1930. The family’s Minton Hickory Stable, led by Miss Nola Minton (Jane’s aunt) is also well recognized for its influence over the American Saddle Horse industry. Miss Nola is the first woman inducted into the Kentucky State Fair Horse Show’s Hall of Fame. Union’s first bell was mounted by Kiwanis International in her honor.

On September 7, 1940, Doug and Jane were married, uniting the Blair and Minton families. After the marriage, Doug served in World War II, spending three years on the Pacific front. He returned home following the war, and worked at the Minton Hickory Mill, but the lumber industry in the post-war world was in decline. Looking for other opportunities, Doug founded the Richland Coal Company in 1947 on land the Minton’s owned. He spent the better part of his life at the helm of this highly successful company.

Doug was as dedicated to the community as he was his company. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, President of the Barbourville PTA, President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Cumberland Council of Boy Scouts of America, President of the Mountain Laurel Festival Association, Director of the Daniel Boone Festival, President of the Kentucky State Fair

BLAIR FAMILY PRESENTED AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PHILANTHROPY

The Blair family of Barbourville was honored during the 2015 Homecoming awards ceremony with the 2015 Blair Award for Outstanding Philanthropy, named in honor of Douglas and Jane Blair. Jane was joined at the ceremony by daughters Janey, Emily, and Nancy (Anne is not pictured); grandson Camden Skidmore, with wife Kimberly and grandson Blair Skidmore, with wife Jennifer.

Define Your LegacyBoard, Chairman of the Board for the Kentucky Independent College Foundation and Trustee, Vice-Chairman and Chairman Emeritus of the Union College Board of Trustees. In 1978, he was chosen by his community as Knox County’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

A handwritten note attached to a 1993 biography submitted to Union College reads: “Everything he has been involved in – he has risen to leadership. He is a visionary and a leader.”

For this community, and for this college, Jane is as much a fixture of legacy as was her husband. Jane is a 1969 graduate of Union College. She is a member of the Woman’s Study Club, the United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Barbourville Garden Club and has been involved with the Mountain Laurel Festival and Daniel Boone Festival.

In 1979, Jane led bidding on a prize country ham at the Kentucky Farm Bureau breakfast at the Kentucky State Fair. She and Doug gave $16,500 for the Muhlenberg County ham, every dollar of which was gifted to Union College through the Kentucky Independent College Foundation. Jane then donated the ham to Union President Mahlon A. Miller to use as a fundraiser for the college’s Centennial Campaign, a campaign for which the couple had already helped to raise more than $160,000.

Doug passed away in 1999 at the age of 81. His obituary asked that friends and family remember him through “expressions of sympathy” given to the college. Jane continues to demonstrate her husband’s community-centric approach to Barbourville and the college located in the heart of the town.

In 2004, Jane was recognized by Union College for 22 years of consecutive giving as a Century II Club member. She was presented with the Union College Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 2006 with the college recognizing “her philanthropy and service come from her deep belief in the vast potential of her community and in a desire to be part of making the potential a reality.”

In 2007, Jane was again honored on behalf of the Blair family and their legacy for 36 years of sustained giving to Union College. Past college presidents have lovingly called Jane “The First Lady of Union College,” a title that honors her dedication to the institution.

The support of Doug and Jane Blair – along with their daughters Janey, Emily, Anne and Nancy - has helped to sustain Union College for more than 50 years. Their support has touched the lives of countless students, each of whom carry that impact and a college degree back to communities throughout Kentucky and Appalachia. The support Doug and Jane Blair have given to Union College is just one example of the Blair philanthropy shared throughout the community they love.

In July, Jane turned 95. She celebrated the occasion with family and friends in the Blair home on Black Street here in Barbourville. The Blair family presented Jane with a certificate recognizing the establishment of the Jane Minton Blair Endowed Award; which is just one more way the Blair family will impact the students of Union College for years to come.

Recognition LevelsVISION MAKER SOCIETIESIn 1879, Union College arose out of a need – a need for education. For the citizens of Barbourville, then a town of 450 citizens and three brick buildings, establishing an institution of higher learning for children was imperative. They believed education was the path to leadership and a brighter future. With that same visionary spirit, Union continues to be a springboard for great minds, for young leaders and for all those with a commitment to education. We want to thank our supporters within these groups of philanthropists who continue to invest in the mission.

Groups include:

DANIEL STEVENSON SOCIETYCredited with rescuing Union from almost certain closing, Daniel Stevenson of Versailles, Ky., served as Union’s president from 1888 to 1897. He fulfilled his dream of establishing a Methodist college in the area he considered in the greatest need of service. He was thefirst president after the college became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. This Society is for donors of $1,000,000 or more cumulatively.

FANNY SPEED SOCIETYMrs. Fanny Speed of Louisville was Union’s first great benefactress. Her interest in Dr. Stevenson’s purchase of Union’s property is evident through her gifts totaling more than $60,000 during his administration. Following her death in 1902, Union received half of her estate, approximately $266,000. These funds helped to complete Speed Hall and rebuild both Stevenson Hall and the Administration building (renamed Classroom Building and later Centennial Hall). This Society is for donors of $500,000 - $999,999 within the fiscal year.

ABIGAIL E. WEEKS SOCIETYMiss Abigail Weeks, a beloved librarian and head of the English department, served the college for 32 years. In the June 2, 1937 issue of the Orange and Black, her service to Union was recognized: “She gave to Union College her sacrificial loyalty, and fulfilled the sentiment of her own lines, written as a fitting close to the college Alma Mater, ‘We will live for thee.’” This Society is for donors of $100,000 - $499,999 within the fiscal year.

FAMILY REMEMBERS BILLIE JEAN MCDADE WITH SCHOLARSHIPEarly in 2015, Drucilla Rolfes started thinking about making a gift to Union College. Though she did not attend Union, her mother – Billie Jean McDade - did. Mrs. McDade was a student at Union College during the WWII era, earning bachelor degrees in English and French as well as a master’s degree as a Rank I Educational Supervisor.

Drue, as she is known among friends and family, never quite settled on what type of gift to make to Union or what amount to donate. In May of that year, at the age of 89, Mrs. McDade passed away. She not only left behind her family, but also thousands of students whom she taught for 38 years as part of the Middlesboro School System. Since education was such a large part of Mrs. McDade’s life, Drue realized her gift to Union College would be the establishment of a scholarship fund. The fund would memorialize her mother and touch generations of new students seeking higher education and the opportunity that comes with it.

Mrs. McDade was raised in Bell County, just a short distance from the Union College campus in Barbourville. She graduated from Middlesboro High School, attended Union College and would return to Middlesboro to spend her life teaching. Mrs. McDade taught language arts to thousands of students during her 38-year tenure at MHS. She also sponsored the 4-H Club, student council, speech, high school newspaper and the school’s yearbook.

Outside of the classroom, Mrs. McDade held office with the Middlesboro Education Association, Kentucky Education Association and the National Education Association. She was elected to Middlesboro City Council, served on numerous community-based committees, was an ardent member of The First Christian Church and was given the rank of Kentucky Colonel for service to her community and state.

“Mrs. McDade loved teaching and guiding her students to help them reach their goals and highest potential,” her memorial tribute says. “Billie Jean was passionate about improving the quality of education in Kentucky and was an inspiration to all who knew her.”

Billie Jean Bailey McDade was returned to The First Christian Church of Middlesboro for memorial services on May 17, 2015. She was laid to rest in the Middlesboro Cemetery. Her family asked “as a testimony to their mother’s life and to carry on her legacy of generosity and compassion for others,” contributions be made to The Billie Jean McDade Educational Endowment, established to create a lasting commitment to education for her community.

The endowment is a large part of Union College’s commitment to financially support its students. McDade’s endowment will serve Bell County students, as requested by the family, attending Union for years to come. The first student will be honored as

the first recipient of that endowment this fall. As the endowment grows, so will the number of students this gift supports.

The Billie Jean McDade Educational Endowment is just one of more than 200 endowed scholarships and awards available to students at Union College. Each endowment is an investment in the college and its students. Gifts are invested to a dedicated purpose; an investment that ensures the principal amount of the gift grows annually.

Over the years, donors have chosen to honor family members, faculty, or other individuals through endowed scholarships. In some cases, members of a particular class or group have pooled gifts to create a special scholarship. The minimum required to establish an endowed scholarship is $10,000.

Endowed awards provide funds for recognizing students with superior academic performance in particular fields of study or areas of interest, talent or leadership. The minimum level to endow a named award is $5000.
