Who We Are

We are an employer led board which aims to lower youth unem-ployment. By creating stronger links between businesses and education we seek to provide more opportunities for young peo-ple to be better prepared for the world of work.

Nationally, Developing the Young Workforce is a government funded project made up of 21 regional groups across Scotland. DYW Moray was established in April 2016, to provide focused support and guidance to Employers and Educational Establish-ments in Moray.

To achieve this, we have strong partnerships in place with Moray Council Education Department, Moray College UHI and Skills De-velopment Scotland.

DYW Moray Chair Welcome I left school age seventeen with a very clear focus that I would become the fourth generation of a Butchery and Farming business in Elgin. Little did I realise that 50 years later, I would be looking back on a career that had been multifaceted and taken me on a journey. Reflecting on the un-derlying driver of my journey over five decades, the conclusion I reach is that while education is the backbone (I.Q.) common sense or emotional intelligence, is a real asset (E.Q.) and motivation is invaluable (I Can.) This ‘mini toolkit’ has been an important point of reference for me and still is in the world of work.

In June 2019, I was invited to take over as Chair of DYW Moray on a tem-porary basis! Twelve months later, I am pleased to be reporting on the performance of DYW Moray for the year 2019-20 and also the vision for the year ahead. The workplace has changed dramatically over the last five decades and expectations have continued to rise, however my toolkit is still in use within the world of Developing the Young Workforce. The idea of a job for life is an exception rather than an aspiration but I would contend that the toolkit remains as we adopt and adapt to an ever changing world. 6

Page 9: Annual Report 2019 2020 - DYW Moray · Annual Report 2019 -2020. Who We Are 1 Meet the Team 2 ... Specsavers Jill Armitt Walkers Shortbread Jade O’Hara Robertson Construction Brian

Over the last year, the Board of DYW Moray has been making a real effort to make us even more relevant to the school communities in Moray. How-ever, critical to this effort are the employers, large and small, both private and public sectors who invest substantially in the future workforce and rec-ognise the importance of early interventions with school communities. Crit-ical also to this has been our very proactive relationship with our partners represented on the DYW Board. This has proved very valuable to myself and our energetic operational staff led by Sarah Baxter who have added re-al value to our task as well as ensuring our formal responsibilities to the Scottish Government are fully evidenced.

Of real significance, during the last year was the offer by one of our leading companies, Chivas Brothers, to undertake an in-depth review of our pur-pose and performance. Against the background of the Scottish Govern-ment’s vision this work formed the basis for a full day workshop bringing together pupils, parents, teachers, local authority senior executives, em-ployers and the DYW Board. This enabled us to explore how we turn the rhetoric of the report into the reality of an effective organisational structure to deliver more effectively the needs of employers and the young school leavers in Moray.

As I write this report the effects of Covid-19 are upon us and a totally new set of challenges. All the more reason that we are ready to respond to fu-ture needs of our young and critically their potential employers.

On a personal basis, I have been stimulated and proud of what has been happening in Moray to retain and up skill our future workforce. This has been led by a Board who are able to demonstrate the value of genuine partnership working and our operational team who without doubt are pre-pared to go the extra mile. There will be challenges ahead without doubt but these challenges should be seen as an opportunity in disguise, as we overcome the current turmoil and with the support of our colleagues at the Scottish Government and the National Chairs group we hope to contribute positively to a new reality.

With thanks,

Jim 7

When one chapter ends another begins. In August 2019, we said a heartfelt goodbye to our colleagues at Moray Chamber of Commerce who hosted DYW Moray for 3 years. Of course, we will continue to work in partnership with Moray Chamber of Commerce as they continue to grow and support the business community in Moray. Since August, our new host has been Moray College UHI. Being based here puts us in a great posi-tion to develop stronger working links within the college net-work and to further develop the organisation’s role in engaging with young people and businesses in Moray.

This past year, we have revitalised our communications strategy. We want to provide all people who interact with DYW Moray, regardless of the chan-nel, with an inspirational experience that reflects our brand values.

We would like to create more content for our four distinct audiences: em-ployers, educators, young people and parents.

We have also launched our brand new website where there is a range of helpful information, tools and links to support you. The website now hosts a jobs board where we will post local job opportunities that are ideal for a Moray young person.

We welcomed the 21 DYW Regional Chairs from across Scotland to Moray in March 2020, where we hosted their second meeting this year at Moray College UHI. This group is chaired by Rob Woodward, For-mer STV Chief Executive and current Chair of the Met Office, supported by our colleagues in the Scottish government leading on the National DYW Agenda.

It was an opportunity for Moray to really demonstrate our worth and we were given the time to offer two speakers from Moray to talk about the upcoming opportunities in our region. Tom Hendry, Left Lieutenant on behalf of Dave Allen, Wing Commander from RAF Lossiemouth offered insight into the vast opportunities and expanding base at RAF Lossie-mouth.

Brian MacAulay, Chivas Brothers Group Manager and DYW Moray Board Member also offered his thoughts on the event advancing manufactur-ing sector and talked about a recent review of DYW Moray conducted by several employees from Chivas Brothers.

We were delighted to launch Marketplace in March 2020. Marketplace is an online booking tool which allows employers to upload their offers for young people, where teachers can go on to the system to book the offers. One of the key benefits of Marketplace is that it opens up a world of na-tional employer opportunities for Moray educators.

Founders4Schools was launched in conjunction with Marketplace this year. Founders4Schools is also an online booking tool where educators can up-load their asks of employers on the web platform. Employers sign up to become a DYW volunteer to receive these requests.

To launch both platforms to the Moray business community we delivered three training sessions along with a social media and radio campaign. Next year, we are going to run training sessions with educators on how to use both platforms.

We can only get better at something if we reflect and review what has took place in the past! March 2020 saw us undertake a successful DYW Review event with our partners, employers, educators, parents and young people from Moray. Collectively in groups we discussed several topics and reviewed our progress to date. Everyone was in agreement that we, alongside our partners have made a real positive impact in Moray. We also identified where the gaps were and ways we can im-prove together.

Well done to Aimee, our Employ-er and School Liaison for winning the Moray Business Women Young Rising Star Award at the Awards Ball in November 2019. Aimee has helped make a last-ing impact within Developing the Young Workforce in Moray and continues to work hard whilst be-ing a great advocate to other young people in Moray.

Aimee said,

“I was in real shock winning this award but delighted to hear my name being announced. I love my job so I was very humbled to have been nominated for this award and be recognised for the work that I do.”

Everyone deserves to be recognised for their impressive hard work, and that’s why we were delighted to sponsor the Primary Pupil of the year award at the Moray and Banffshire Heroes Awards in May 2019. Riley Winton (10), Banff, won this award by organising and asking people for donations of food and clothes to help homeless people. Well done Riley, we are thrilled you have won this award!

For the third year running we have sponsored the ‘Moray Junior Bake off’ run by local charity ‘Moray School Bank’. The hospitality based competition brings primary aged children together to bake different tasty treats by following a recipe. Winners from each of the three heats then were brought together for the final to produce a showstop-per cake to impress the judges. Well done to all involved— your cakes looked scrumptious!

At DYW Moray we believe that there is a job out there for everybody. Everybody deserves a chance to pursue a career and that is why we ran a social media campaign and a business breakfast for employers on employing those with additional support needs. It’s important that employers know what support is out there and what funding is availa-ble to them. We thank DYW Board Member Victor West, Managing Di-rector at Associated Seafoods for being our inspiration for the week by highlighting to employers the benefits of employing a young person with additional support needs through speaking about his own experi-ence.

Throughout the past year, we have supported our partners in co-ordinating and facilitating several industry insight sector days to S3 pupils from across all eight of Moray secondary schools. Each young person decided which sector day they wished to attend based on what they aspire to do upon leaving school. During these events, young people experienced a variety of talks from local employers and interactive activities based on the eight key growth sectors de-tailed in the ‘Moray Skills Pathway’. The feedback from the pupils were fantastic where they valued the opportunity to speak to em-ployers face-to-ace.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2020 involved joining forces once again with our partners to organise and run two separate events, one for parents/young people and one for employers. Gino, our new Modern Apprentice and Aimee, our former apprentice opened each event by showcasing their experiences as apprentices and setting the scene for the night ahead. Both evenings saw apprenticeship experts host stands and deliver presentations on a specific apprenticeship topic. Robert Gordon University, Moray College UHI and Skills Development Scotland were some of our presenters during the evening. Over 100 young people, parents and professionals attended over the two eve-nings. We look forward to see what Scottish Apprenticeship Week has in store for us next year.

We recognise that Educators and Careers Advisers are valuable influencers for our young people in Moray. We have in the past year offered workplace visits for teachers, lecturers and careers advisers who can bring back their knowledge and learn-ing to the classroom. Some of the employers who have offered a workplace visit include Chivas Brothers, Walkers Shortbread, NHS Grampian and Specsavers.

The feedback from these have been really positive. We are looking forward to planning and organising more employer in-sight sessions for educators and careers advisors next year.

Photography Course

Due to the success of last year’s photography course, we decided to repeat it this year for young people aged 14 - 24. The project aimed to offer insight into careers in Moray through the art of photog-raphy. Individuals on the course were guided by professional photog-rapher, Gary Murison who delivered photography training sessions, as a result increasing participants’ photography skills and knowledge.

We have been positively overwhelmed by the parental en-gagement we have experienced over the past year.

Over 60 parents and young people attended our second Teach in Moray event to find out more about the routes into teaching and why young people should consider teaching in Moray.

We also delivered our second Police Scotland Information Evening to highlight to young people and parents what the role of a Police Officer entails and to promote the Special Con-stable role to those considering joining the Police. We were delighted to have over 100 parents and young people attend. See feedback on the next page.

We saw over 20 employers join us for our Graduate Apprenticeship Business Breakfast in November 2019 to hear from Fiona, Business Development Manager at Robert Gordon University. Fiona explained the Graduate Apprenticeship and what it entails for the employee and employer involved. During the morning we also heard from a current graduate apprentice, their mentor and also a local employer who employs Graduate Apprentices. Our morning was a success as 9/9 attendees who were surveyed said they were more knowledgea-ble about Graduate Apprenticeships.

“I really enjoyed the careers’ fair at Forres Academy. I liked meeting all the exhibitors and it was good to learn about different jobs. Before I went there, I had only thought about being a joiner like my dad, and I might still do that, but I also learned about being a dog handler in the RAF and I am now thinking about that too.”

- Adam, Pupil at Dyke Primary School

What do our partners say?

“I really can’t recommend the DYW Moray team and their programme highly enough and I would urge all employers to do what Balfour Beatty has done and utilise your local DYW team.”

- John Cairns, Community Bene-fit Advisor at Balfour Beatty

“I loved my work experi-ence during Meaningful May and hearing about what Moray has to offer young people. After gain-ing this experience it’s made me confirm I defi-nitely want to work with children!”

- Lisa, Pupil at Elgin High School

“What was great is that the picnic bench project was really hands on and the young people have a real, finished product that will be used by people out with our school network. That has made the pupils really proud.”

- Vickie Glennie, Principle Teacher Technical at Buckie High School

“DYW Moray have helped us link up with schools in Moray to speak to the young people about marine environment. Per-sonally I've learnt how the schools func-tion and how the young people are learn-ing new skills.”

- Alison Rose, Centre Manager at WDC Dolphin Centre

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement with DYW Moray and can safely say that the interaction I and my fellow solicitors have had with the school pupils at both careers events and in the classroom has been very reward-ing.”

“It’s a great success to see that we have created many more positive experiences this year for young people in Moray to develop and ex-plore their career options. This is testament to having a great team and board, positive partnership working and the support we have from the Business community and Educators in Moray to work togeth-er. I am very proud to be a part of this journey.”
