1. Activities in 2014
a. 21.10.2014 Photonic Day at Faculty of Physics
Our chapter took part in this event at the Warsaw University of Technology to
promote photonics and optics studies and our organization. We informed about
some upcoming events, described our activities and invited interested students to
a recruitment meeting for new members. The main participants of this event were
students of faculties connected to photonics from our university.
b. 22.10.2014 KONIK Fair of Scientific Chapters and Student Organizations
As each year we took part in KONIK fair. It is one of the biggest events of this kind,
the participants are usually students of the whole University wanting to get to
know scientific organizations. There, we showed our projects and explained the
way our organization works.
c. 15.11.2014 Scientific Student Organization Picnic for celebration of
100th anniversary of the Warsaw University of Technology
As student chapter we feel strongly connected to our University and support many
promotional events. This is also good time and place to show our activities and
describe SPIE as worldwide organization. The participants were people connected
to the University with their families.
2. Activities in 2015
a. 09.01.2015 Meeting for a New Year
After long Christmas break we decided to spend some time together, playing
board and computer games. Our chapter plans many activities dedicated for
integration and gathering together, this is one of them, which most of us enjoy
very much. This is also time to get to know better each other.
b. 11.01.2015 Celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Warsaw
University of Technology during a volleyball game in the Torwar Hall
As scientific student chapter we support our University in promotion. We
explained some basic photonics principles to the audience of the match. There
were people of all ages and interests, also some companies and other student
organizations too.
c. 25.03.2015 Integration in a cinema
Our chapter also pays attention to integration. We spent some time together,
because we know how important is the feeling of belonging to the team and
getting to know each other better. This time we chose a movie “Kingsman: The
Secret Service”.
d. 28.03.2015 “Open Days” at Faculty of Mechatronics
Each year our chapter takes part in “Open Days” at Faculty of Mechatronics. It is a
great opportunity to show our chapter to new students and interest them in
photonics from the beginning. We also described studies at this faculty and
answered questions from potential students.
e. 08-09.04.2015 OPTONexpo
We were also proud to show our projects at OPTONexpo, very big event connected
to optics and photonics. There were many companies and other student
organizations, showing their work. The participants were students, professors,
companies.
f. 25.04.2015 “Skołowany Weekend” science festival
This event is dedicated to children, primary school, middle school and high school
students. We wanted to make people interested in science and especially
photonics from the very beginning, when they are still curious about world.
g. 01-03.04.2015 Celebration of the Opening the IYL and leadership
meeting in Saint Petersburg
One of our officers, Magdalena Kiwior, obtained a grant and went to this
conference in Saint Petersburg. She was describing our projects and sharing
experience (first photo), taking part in leadership workshops. She made friends
with other officers and students.
h. 09.05.2015 Science Picnic of Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science
Centre
As every year, our chapter took an active part in organizing scientific picnic. The
Science Picnic of Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre is Europe’s
largest outdoor event aimed to promote science. Every year, it attracts crowds of
visitors to Warszawa. Scientific institutions, universities, research institutes,
museums, cultural institutions, and foundations related to science and science
clubs present their achievements and reveal the behind-the-scenes aspects of
their everyday work. This year “Light” was the theme of the picnic.
Our experiments were very popular among the older and younger visitors. This
event gathers every year, with increasing number of participants. We try to change
our experiments every year and surprise the audience. We tell about the
opportunities for development in areas related to light. Especially to the younger
visitors.
i. 15.05.2015 Optical show and eye tests in a kindergarten
We met children in the kindergarten, spun the tale about “Photonic Knight” full of
photonics phenomena and additionally examined children’s eyes with Snellen
chart and Ishihara test to check for any developing defects. We performed it for
four groups about 20 kids in each one.
j. 27-30.05.2015 OPTO2015 Conference in Wroclaw
As years before, we took part in OPTO Meeting conference. In 2015 the chapter
from Wrocław had the pleasure to organize this remarkable event. It was an
occasion to present our work and also to get familiar with other topics presented
by our colleagues.
k. 08.07.2015 Our new room
This year our chapter got a room for sharing in Faculty of Mechatronics. This is a
great opportunity for our development as we got a place to meet, work and keep
our things safely.
l. 08-13.08.2015 SPIE Optics + Photonics 2015 meeting
A proud tradition of our chapter is to send our members to Optics + Photonics conference in San Diego. In 2015 our chapter was represented by our president Paulina Młynarska and treasurer Jakub Żak thanks to SPIE Officer Travel Grant and SPIE Student Author Travel Grant. They were able to present their work at the conference and share their experience about chapter’s activities with SPIE Student Chapters members around the world. They took part in a lot of great lectures and met a lot of fascinating people from all over the world. Thanks to inspiring Leadership Workshop they came back with plenty of new ideas and extended knowledge about possibilities arising from being a member of SPIE organisation.
m. 19.09.2015 Warsaw University of Technology Opticians Reunion
The history of Photonics Engineering Division of our University dates back to the
fifties. Every ten years there is a reunion of alumnus of present Photonics
Engineering Division (former names: “Optical Instruments” and “Optical Devices
and Systems”). This year we helped in the organization of the event. Our members
guided guests around present university laboratories and served as technical help.
A lot of alumnus attended this event, many of which work in photonics and optical
oriented companies. We had a great chance to meet them and to talk about their
past activities in our Faculty and present work.
n. 26.09.2015 Inspiration Picnic in Iława
We had a pleasure to take part in the very first edition of Inspiration Picnic in
Iława - small city in the beautiful Masuria region of Poland. The main idea of the
event is to bring science to children and teenagers from the region. For us it was a
great possibility to broaden the knowledge of ordinary people about optic
phenomena surrounding us. Our station was very popular and as result we won a
prize for one of the 3 best stations during picnic, which was a brand new tablet.
o. 08.10.2015 “Otrzęsiny” – party for new students
We also took part in a party for new students as hosts of one of the competitions
for them. This is very good way for our chapter to be better recognizable among
new students and at the Faculty of Mechatronics. That also shows others that in
our Chapter we have a good, friendly atmosphere and we want to keep it that
way.
p. 28-29.10.2015 KONIK Fair of Scientific Chapters and Student
Organizations
Our chapter takes part in annual convent named KONiK at our University. The idea
is to present what each scientific chapter and research group do. Each year a lot of
people show interest in our experiments and SPIE organization.
q. 12-16.10.2015 “Optics-2015” conference in Saint Petersburg
Our president Paulina Młynarska took part in the above mentioned conference.
International School on Photonics and Optical Information Technologies has been
a wonderful occasion to learn from and become friends with people from other
student chapters. It has been also a pleasure to participate in such a well organized
student chapter event. Observations made during the conference should bear fruit
in the future of our chapter.
r. 20-22.11.2015 Leadership meeting for polish SPIE chapters
We organized the leadership workshops for all Polish SPIE chapters cooperating
with Warsaw University SPIE student chapter. As we know that effective
leadership is crucial for any organization to work properly, we were focused on
improving soft skills. The next subject we raised within the meeting, is how to
successfully organize a scientific conference. We prepared the attendees for every
aspect of this task, including possible obstacles. Skills in overcoming those will be
of great importance. Furthermore, it was a great opportunity to reunite with our
friends from other Polish chapters, share our experiences and hold a discussion
concerning our local issues.
s. 15.12.2015 Workshops for technical high school
As the Faculty of Mechatronics organizes some workshops, our chapter was asked
to prepare one of them. The topics we have discussed were: optical tomography,
photonics in life sciences, holography, 3D display methods and light sources.
3. Other activities.
We are holding an “Introduction to MATLAB” course every week for our
members and every interested student as this tool is very helpful for future
engineers.
This year our chapter bought some T-shirts for us to be better recognizable in
crowd during events, especially those like scientific fairs. They are red,
eye-catching and have our official sign.
We do some meetings close to nature like in park, when weather is good. When
we can more calmly discuss about the future of our SPIE Chapter and spend
time in nice surroundings, not feeling so official.
4. Future.
Matlab sessions turned out to be great initiative. We would like to organize
more training sessions and put an emphasis on self-development of our group.
Our city has been chosen to organize Opto Meeting Conference in year 2017.
Opto Meeting is the main student conference in this part of Europe related to
optics, photonics and optoelectronics. It has quite long tradition already - it’s
history dates back to the year 2005. We feel very motivated and we plan to
start preparations in the beginning of the year 2016.
Our other big goal is to start regular meetings with photonics related
employers next year. We would like to show students what are the possibilities
of work in the field and become familiar with expectations and possibilities
offered by our potential future employers.
