1. CONTEXT School Name: Seacliff Primary School Number: 0913

Principal: Greg Miller Partnership Marion Coast

In general our students come from stable socio-economic backgrounds. The school is extremely well supported by its community. Staff retention was very high.

The table above shows the school community groups have stayed much the same over the 3 year period 2012-2014.

There were a few staff changes as the school welcomed Rhianna Lucas, Richard Kingdon and Leah Cece onto our teaching staff. Denise Hooper finally retired after serving an amazing 41 years as Office Manager.

2. REPORT FROM GOVERNING COUNCIL Chairperson Report Seacliff Primary School 2014 On behalf of the Seacliff Primary School governing Council welcome to the AGM and thank you for coming along tonight. It is nice to see everyone. This was my second term as Chair of the Governing Council and it has been a good year. I have enjoyed the role and would like to thank Greg and all the Governing Councillors for their input and support over the past year. I will briefly mention a couple of the highlights from the last 12 months. In late 2013 the school was finally zoned after much consideration and discussion and we are now starting to see the benefits with the school able to keep the number of students at a manageable level for the facilities and feel of the school. Bring Your Own Device was a topic that was discussed pretty much the whole year. There were a lot of issues to discuss and consider and we are still working our way through things as that pop up and we start to see how the devices work and how the students and teachers engage with the process. It is really exciting that we are able to offer our kids the opportunity of keeping up to date with technology and leaning in different ways. Well done to Wes and Greg who did a lot of the ground work and worked through the process. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and our kids will be using these devices for a whole range of learning activities. The Governing Council is responsible for OSHC & the Canteen. OSHC had a really busy year last year reviewing policies and working through accreditation for the Quality Assurance Assessment. The OSHC subcommittee worked through a mountain of policies and the results were fantastic for OSHC, they were rated as exceeding in 5 out of the 7 areas rated. Numbers for OSHC seem to fluctuate slightly however the staff continue to offer a fantastic service, with a great variety of activities both during the school term and in the vacation care programs. The Canteen staff worked hard to ensure it was a productive year and continue to work to ensure the school community is offered a canteen that provides quality items every day. Brian Schiller winning the Prime Ministers Primary Science Teacher of the year was a great result for Brian, who puts in so much work with the kids in his class and in organising the Olilphant Science Award entrants for the school. It is also great for the school. Congratulations Brian. Seacliff Primary School is really lucky to have such great teachers and support staff, it really adds to the diversity and quality of our school. Well done to all the staff for a great effort over the last 12 months. The subcommittees who support the Governing Council, in sport, fundraising, canteen & finance have done a great and I would like to thank them all for their hard work and enthusiasm. Fundraising deserves a special mention as the group worked really hard to come up with ideas and activities for the school community to support. It was great that they raised so much and we are able to start to use the funds to work on improvements around the school. The playground has started after much discussion and input from the kids. It will be exciting to watch how it develops and to see the project come together in all aspects. Thank you. Jacinta Day Seacliff Primary School Governing Council Chairperson

Strategic Direction 1: Improvement in Literacy Student Achievement Target/s: Each cohort achieves above the National and Regional mean in Reading. Target Achieved Literacy Summary Reading across each cohort continues to show strong achievement when compared to the National, Regional and Similar schools means. In Reading all Seacliff cohorts achieved above the National Mean, significantly above the Regional Mean and above the Similar schools mean.

School growth in Reading from Year 3-5 shows 79% of students are in the Middle or Upper progress group. Likewise school growth from Year 5-7 shows 76% of students are in the Middle or Upper progress group. Overall these are very strong results in reading and continue the trend of the last few years.

The Seacliff PS Year 3 cohort achieved significantly above the Southern Adelaide Region in all aspects of literacy tested except spelling. They achieved just below the National Mean in all aspects except for spelling which was significantly below.

Page 4

The Seacliff PS Year 5 cohort achieved above Southern Region and similar Schools in all aspects of literacy tested except spelling which was about the same. They also achieved above the national mean in reading (+4). The Seacliff PS Year 7 cohort achieved above the Southern Adelaide Region in all aspects of literacy tested except for writing. They also achieved above the national mean in reading (+5). Overall we are pleased with the results however it shows we have to improve our spelling skills. The R-3 literacy support programs have been very successful. The students always develop a very positive attitude with a mindset to succeed.

Cohort Growth in Reading Year 3-5

Tables showing: Analysis of Reading NaPLaN Progress for Year 3-5 same cohorts compared to Like Schools and Region over the last 6 years. Seacliff achievement scores have been higher than both comparison groups in Year 3 and Year 5 since 2010. This shows a very positive trend throughout the school over a long period of time. The growth rates for the 2014 Year 5 cohort is in a similar range to the comparison groups.

Cohort Growth in Reading Year 5-7 Table showing: Analysis of NaPLaN Reading Progress for Year 5-7 same cohorts compared to Like Schools and Region over the last 5 years. The decrease in growth rate for the Year 7 cohort was unexpected and whilst the current Year 7 score is still above the National Mean and both comparison groups we will seek a higher growth rate in the next cohort. A full year of implementing the Quicksmart Literacy program will support this. 2012 2014 Growth Seacliff Year 5 512 Seacliff Year 7 550 +38 Region 484 Region 539 +53 Like Schools 490 Like Schools 545 +55 2011 2013 Growth Seacliff Year 5 506 Seacliff Year 7 557 +51 Region 479 Region 535 +56 Like Schools 482 Like Schools 540 +58 2010 2012 Growth Seacliff Year 5 512 Seacliff Year 7 542 +30 Region 476 Region 535 +59 Like Schools 479 Like Schools 542 +63 2009 2011 Growth Seacliff Year 5 507 Seacliff Year 7 552 +45 Region 486 Region 533 +47 Like Schools 507 Like Schools 555 +48

Strategic Direction 2: Improvement in Numeracy Student Achievement Target/s: Each cohort achieves above the National and Regional mean. Achieved by Year 5 Cohort Numeracy Summary Again this year the Year 5 and 7 Seacliff cohorts have achieved strong results. This is a consistent trend for the last 6 years. The Year 3 cohort whilst below our normal expectations at 12 points below the National Mean still performed well when compared to the Regional Mean. Seacliff student’s growth rates have been higher than both comparison groups for 4 out of 5 years and showed a surge in 2014 particularly from the Year 5 group. Year 3 cohort has achieved above the Region mean (+3) and below the National Mean (-12).

Year 5 cohort has achieved significantly above the Region Mean(+33) and above the National Mean (+10). Year 7 students achieved significantly above the Regional Mean (+18) and just below the National Mean (-2). Students in the Quicksmart Numeracy program again achieved very strong growth as measured by the University of New England. We are really pleased with our Numeracy results and will continue to focus on improvement in this area particularly with our Year 2 and Year 4 at risk students next year. Cohort Growth in Numeracy Year 3-5 The following tables are an Analysis of Numeracy NaPLaN Progress for the same cohort compared to Like Schools and Regional over the same period of time. The tables below compare the growth rates in numeracy for the same cohorts over three year periods. Seacliff student’s growth rates have been higher than both comparison groups for 4 out of 5 years and showed a surge in 2014. The actual achievement scores have also been higher than both comparison groups in Year 5 since 2009 and significantly higher in 2014. Both sets of cohorts show very positive improvement and achievement trend for Seacliff PS students over a six year period. 5. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

2014 QuickSmart Numeracy Results for

Seacliff Primary School Effect Size statistics can be understood based on the work of Hattie (Hattie, J. (2009). Visible

Learning: A synthesis of over 800 meta-analyses relating to achievement. London: Routledge) such that:

o Effect Sizes below 0.2 are considered poor, with an appropriate range of growth over an academic year for a student cohort established as within the range of 0.2 to 0.4;

o Effect Size scores of 0.4 to 0.6 are considered strong; o Effect Sizes between 0.6 and 0.8 are considered very strong; and o Effect Size scores above 0.8 represent substantial improvement of the order of

approximately two-three years’ growth.

Results on the PATM assessments

The analysis of the PATM Australian-normed standardised test data was completed based on the scores of all students for whom both pre-intervention and post-intervention PATM test results were available. (Note: Students who did not do a pre-test or were absent at the end of the year for a variety of reasons and missed the post-test, are not included in these results.)

Table 2: PATM results (Scale scores) 2014

Comparison Students 6 62.417 16.254 63.383 21.441 0.966 0.051

Note: There were no students identified as Indigenous in this data set.

These results indicate a higher gain for QuickSmart students in relation to their average-achieving peers in the Comparison group. This improvement is in excess of the expected yearly growth of students’ scores as measured on the PATM of 5 scale score points.

The DECD scale score standard for Year 5 students is 44.8 as measured by the PATM. Both the Quicksmart students and comparison group achieved this standard.
