The Costs of Solid Waste
• In 2010, New Jersey spent nearly a billion dollars disposing of almost 9 million tons of waste, excluding environmental harm.
• Proper recycling could have saved $250 million in disposal costs.

EFFECTS OF OZONE ON LUNG FUNCTION
Healthy airway
Inflamed airway due to ozone inhalation

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS: Cough, throat irritation, pain, burning, or discomfort in the chest when taking a deep breath, chest tightness, wheezing, or shortness of breath.
CAUSE: Injury to airway epithelial cells followed by a cascade of other effects.
The lung of a person exposed only to air.
The tiny cilia that clear the lungs of mucus appear along the top of the image in a neat and regular row.
The lung of a person exposed to 20 ppb of ozone for 4our hours during moderate exercise.
Some cilia appear missing and others appear misshapen.
Arrows point to tiny bodies called neutrophils, an indicator of inflammation.
