A B O U T U SLEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT THROUGH EDUCATION OVERVIEW
Make A Difference Leadership Foundation (MAD Leadership Foundation) provides access to quality education and leadership development opportunities by supporting high school learners and tertiary students comprehensively, throughout their academic and personal journeys, and ensuring that they have the necessary tools and opportunities to reach their full potential as the future leaders of South Africa.
Since the beginning, Founder and Chairman, Francois Pienaar has had an inspiring vision to provide educational access to deserving scholars with leadership potential (but who face economic and other barriers) through an individualised and personal approach.
Through the comprehensive, personal and long-term support we offer our scholars, we develop an alumni of MAD Leadership Foundation Fellows who will invest back into South Africa and be a powerful force for positive change and leaders in their right.
OUR MISSION
It is the mission of MAD Leadership Foundation to provide academically talented scholars with exceptional leadership development opportunities through education and mentorship, in order to inspire a better future for South Africa.
OUR VISION
The key output is an alumni of MAD Leadership Foundation Fellows who aim to invest back in South Africa and who are a powerful force for positive change in their own unique way and leaders in their own right.
OUR VALUES
Everything we do is measured against our values:
• Ambition with hard work• Passion with discipline• Courage with honesty• Confidence with humility• Integrity

CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT
FRANCOIS PIENAAR – FOUNDING CHAIRMAN
It took a great deal of courage and conviction to make the decision in 2003 to take a stand for South Africa’s potential and establish MAD Leadership Foundation. We see that same sense of courage displayed daily at MAD Leadership Foundation – the courage our scholars have to excel despite their circumstances; the courage to take a stand despite what others might think; and the courage to actively seek the means to want more for themselves, their communities and their futures.
We have seen, over the years, that courage and leadership go hand-in-hand. One cannot exist without the other. To be a leader - to make that decision to stand out from the crowd; to say or do something that others might not agree with - requires true courage. It is a value we instil and develop in our scholars as it forms the foundation for the type of value-based leadership we aim to develop.
It is not only our scholars we see as courageous, but our supporters too. You too have taken a stand to support what you believe will impact South Africa; to highlight the education and leadership plight in our country; and to bring awareness to a Foundation that provides the platform and necessary support to the next generation of leaders for South Africa.
We salute your courage, and acknowledge the commitment every single one of our corporate and scholarship partners have shown - our runners, cyclists and golfers; our volunteer mentors; and the many individuals who have expressed their support in any way they can. The decision to invest in South Africa, to support change and be the difference is a courageous one, and displays the initiative that our country and our youth needs.
Thank you for another inspiring year.

IMPACT OF OUR CORE PROGRAMMESLEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
OUR APPROACH
At the core of everything we do is developing our scholars to be future leaders. We want to see our scholars become leaders who can lead with integrity in local and global environments.
With the help of recognised specialists in this field, MAD Leadership Foundation has developed a Leadership Programme that aims to instil these qualities through four major leadership events annually - three Leadership Forums and an Annual Leadership Summit attended by all scholars.
The forums are regional workshops that are presented with the purpose of exposing our scholars to as many diverse types of leadership styles, values and attributes as possible, to develop their unique leadership abilities. They are also encouraged to engage in discussions on societal issues and the kind of leadership that can help address these problems.
At the Annual Leadership Summit our scholars engage with recognised leaders from various sectors and reflect on challenging issues of leadership.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Our scholars’ feedback shows that in 2016 the leadership themes and content, the events and programmes, and the speakers and facilitators were beneficial and of interest to their leadership requirements.

OUR SUPPORT PROGRAMMES PROVIDE KEY ELEMENTS FOR SCHOLAR SUCCESS
Holistic Wellness Programme
Our Wellness Programme focuses on the emotional and physical well-being of our scholars through the collective effort of our multi-disciplinary Scholar Support Unit, which is managed by a Clinical Psychologist.
Wellness Programme Outcomes:
Develop skills and attitudes to enable healthy, lifelong physical and dietary habits and choices.
Develop healthy relationships.
Identify, manage and appropriately express emotions and behaviours.
Make responsible choices and access external support systems when needed.
Academic Support and Guidance
Academic excellence is successfully achieved through a full support programme of tuition funding, up-to-standard schooling, career advice and development, counselling, study skills and IT skills for the full 9+ years each scholar is on the programme.
Academic Programme Outcomes:
Graduate from high school and tertiary institutions.
Perform above national averages and achieve distinctions.
Motivated to learn and express curiosity.
Mentorship Programme
Our volunteer Mentorship Programme is fully structured, providing training to the selected mentors. It has specific focus areas depending on the developmental age and stage of the scholar being mentored. We seek mentorships in two large clusters – school learners (grade 8 – 12) and tertiary students (tertiary education).
Mentorship involves building a positive relationship with the MAD Leadership Foundation scholars, encouraging them through their schooling and assisting with life-skills development and learning.
“I thought my students would be the ones doing the learning, but I did not know that I would be learning too. Such an inspiring opportunity”. Belinda Mendu
“My mentorship experience has been challenging at times but I have found tremendous value in developing a relationship with my mentee, for both his sake and my own. In fulfilling the mentor role, I have inadvertently found it to also be a very introspective process that has led to my own personal growth. MAD Leadership Foundation has clearly identified the leaders of tomorrow and I am proud to be associated with the initiative”. Rory Logan

Fellows Programme
Once our scholars graduate from tertiary studies, they become part of our Fellows Programme. This programme allows them to remain part of the MAD Leadership Foundation family and to receive the necessary personal and professional support, ensuring their success as future leaders and successful professionals.
Fellows Programme Outcomes:
Develop effective communication skills.
Develop positive work habits.
Established in employment after graduating from tertiary studies.

COMMUNITY IMPACT ECO CHILDREN
MAD Leadership Foundation has partnered with Eco Children for the past five years in support of their Eco Village programme in rural Mpumalanga. Eco Children has a whole school development approach, and the Eco Villages form an essential part of their relationships with local schools.
To date, we have supported five public schools adopted by Eco Children in the district, as part of their Support-a-School programme. Eco Villages have been established in each of the following schools:
• Matikinya Primary School - Adopted in 2012
• Seganyane Primary School - Adopted in 2012
• Mahlathi Primary School - Adopted in 2014
• Hloaia Primary School - Adopted in 2016
• Makwetše Primary School - Adopted in 2016
Grade six and seven learners at the school are taught how to grow fresh vegetables first-hand by working in the gardens. Further ecology-based lessons are taught in the refurbished classrooms to instill a love for the natural world from a young age and, subsequently for conservation.
The learners at adopted schools are also exposed to international volunteers during the development and ongoing maintenance of the Eco Villages. The partnership with Australian Volunteers International and the Classic Wallabies Indigenous Exchange programme has been a valuable one and came about thanks to MAD Leadership Foundation. It improves Eco Children’s impact, and the interactions between volunteers and learners have been immensely rewarding as local learners get to practice their spoken English and expand their knowledge of other countries and cultures.

SHANY VAN DEN BERG ART COLLABORATION
Shany van den Berg is the MAD Leadership Foundation 2016 Art Patron. She spent a fulfilling day with four learners from Bloemhof High School in Cape Town: Taymia, Thina, Caylee and Alita. As a creative team, they created a Shany-original piece that, for them, represented peace, courage and the pride to walk life’s path bravely. The artwork is themed Courage, as the learners were inspired by Shany’s free spirit, artistic bravery, the confidence she displayed in herself as an artist, and the way she challenged them to explore their courage. We have partnered with Mervyn Gers Ceramics, an internationally acclaimed ceramicist, to create a bespoke range of hand-made ceramic plates, based on the artwork created through this collaboration. A limited edition of 200 plates will be made available each year.

The City Lodge Hotel Group has been MAD Leadership Foundation’s accommodation partner since 2014, providing 100 night stays a year to MAD Leadership Foundation staff and scholars.
