GENERATION NEXT INDIA PHARMA LEADERS - Reinventing Driver's For Growth -

A

T

s we embark a full thoughtful analysis of Generation Next Pharma Leaders at Industry's most eagerly awaited thAnnual meet 4 Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit & Awards 2011 to be staged by Pharmaleaders in

thassociation with Indo-American Chamber of Commerce ( IACC) on Saturday,10 December 2011 at Hotel Lalit

Intercontinental( Near Mumbai Airport), Mumbai , India, welcome to the brand new world of Generation Next Indian

Pharma Leaders who have risen under the shadow of their visionary fathers & has been instrumental in shaping up the

healthcare industry what it is today. A careful analysis of the present leadership transition & succession will reveal that

indeed, Indian pharmaceutical industry has been heading for a metamorphosis due to the induction of new way of thinking by

the Generation Next Pharmaceutical Pharma Leaders. The evolution of Indian pharmaceutical Sector since independence

has been the story of great show of resilience displayed by the patriarchs who dominated Indian pharma sector in reverese

engineering & operated under the domain of License Raj till the enunciation of economic liberalization in 1991 under the

visionary Finance Minister Manmohan Singh, currently PM. India was exposed to globalization & was thrown plethora of

challenges & opportunities.

he first three to four decade of the evolution of Indian Pharma sector saw the visionary legends who scripted the

growth story & brought milestone achievements against the powerful MNC's who continued their move to grab the

market share with their high Research-base product range. Late Dr Parvinder Singh of Ranbaxy, Dr Yusuf

Hameid of Cipla, I A Modi & Raman Bhai Patel of erstwhile Cadila group, Samprada Singh of Alkem, Suresh Kare of

Indoco, Habil Khorakiwala of Wockhardt are some of the notable names that fought against all odds & built-up rapidly

their respective empires. While many of the erstwhile regime has changed or diminished or renovated, the new emerging

power-equations have come in to fuel the growth engine. “I can say with all confidence & beyond any shadow of doubt that

these Pharma Leaders not only mapped the unorganized pharma market but got adapted to the emerging marketing

scenario as they changed their Type-Writer to modern day Laptop. While doing so, they went extra miles in Joint Ventures,

Acquisitions & Research outlook, leaving a rich legacy to their successors, only time can say that the rich leadership style

they practiced in bringing reforms to their own systems, how their sons, daughters & professional designated board will

be able to accelerate the pace”. Born with silver spoon in their mouth, these billionaire entrepreneurs featured in this story

also the others who due to lack of space or unavailability of authentic source of informations have taken the center stage of

their growth engine, so far, are struggling with ideas & remain deeply under the shadow & influence of their fathers, as the

change from past style to present regime where technological innovations have dominated the space with great speed.

Undoubtedly, the foremost fathers of these firms have grown tremendously although we are hearing of class of thoughts &

differences of opinions as the companies which was running with one leadership & command has seen the two power-centers

& the loyalty of interests has shifted two-fold as the employees try their best to please both father-son duo. While the old

school of thought led by the founder clearly have the edge in decision making process but their shadows clearly reflect in the

power struggle.

K e y n o t e A d d r e s s : R e b r a n d i n g P h a r m a L e a d e r s h i p : W h a t ' s t h e k e y t o s u c c e s s f o r the next generation of Pharma leaders? How Pharma can change its image from a leading rand expert. What does it take to shake off the negative connotations and be seen as a “star” industry again?. The key to success for the next generation of Pharma leaders will be to harness and focus institutional brilliance by becoming more disciplined, transparent and agile. Our experience with Pharmas is that they are loaded with forward thinking, technically brilliant, fast- and hard-working professionals. I've seen great strides in the development of organizational structures and processes designed to shift focus and resources from one priority to another. The challenge: That level of discipline currently resides at the top of most organizations. I believe there's a need for a much more systemic, top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top approach built around agile development principles. The current environment may well be the driver for that next level of alignment and focus.

Keynote Address : Dr. Rashmi Barbhaiya , CEO and Managing Director - Advinus Therapeutics Ltd. From Scientist To CEO. The

vision: Create a Pharmaceutical company focused on discovering and developing the next generation of high end commercialized

medicines. The best places to start? Recruiting next-generation leadership. In order to be successful, start-up biotechnology

andPharmaceutical companies need CEOs who are generalists, combining the necessary blend of business acumen, scientific

understanding, and communication skills.

Keynote: India : An Emerging Pharmaceutical Powerhouse : Dr Ajit V Dangi, Board Chairman, Fulford India Ltd. President &

CEO, Danseen Consulting .An Emerging Pharmaceutical Powerhouse. The presentation will cover Key strategic drivers for

profitable growth. Including enabling business environment, leveraging Intellectual property as a competitive strategy, building

international brands , inorganic growth thru` mergers , acquisitions and alliances, changing paradigm in Pharmaceutical R&D,

Biosimilar and OTC Opportunities , making India a Destination of Choice in CRAMS by moving from cost arbitrage to intellectual

Challenges & Oppourtunities of Nutraceutical Markets in India. Mr V.S.Reddy, CMD, British Biologicals Nutraceutical market is set to achieve a market size of Rs 90 billion in 2013 at a CAGR of 20.24%. Nutraceuticals are gaining acceptance globally for their ability to address several diseases. Vitamins, Minerals and Nutrients constitute about 85% of the global market whileantioxidants and anti-agents account for 10% other segments such as herbal extracts occupy 5% of the market. The US has been the major market for nutraceuticals with India and China becoming fastest growing markets.

But is there an upside for drug manufacturers? Are there benefits which will outweigh the potential increase in marketing and R&D costs? This panel will look at new developments in personalised medicine and discuss whether it can be made to pay its way.

The case for personal ised medic ine – i s th is the fu ture and, i f so , how wil l we pay for i t?

D i f f e r e n t i a t e o r D i e - P h a r m a c e u t i c a l I n d u s t r y i n I n d i a .

The Pharma industry is awash with talk about the inevitable doom facing the medical rep. They speak of the medical rep as some

outdated, outmoded, non-thinking, inflexible, creature. A modern-day Dodo that cannot adjust to the changing environment around it.

The Pharma business environment, like any other business environment, has evolved over recent years. Most Pharma companies had

not fully anticipated the scale of this evolution and have found themselves reacting to change rather than leading it.Faced with reduced

access to their prescriber customers the Pharma industry's reaction was not to try and understand why access was falling and address the

root cause, but rather, to create additional trading faces to give them more opportunities for access. In the UK, the blame was laid at the

door of change in the political environment. GPs were now too busy with GP fundholding - their administrative load had increased - and

therefore they had less time to see reps. They were forced to have a minimum number of patients on their list so they had to amalgamate

into group practices - spec calls had declined and long-term appointment systems were making access more difficult. Mr.Deepak Naik,

Do Pharmaceutical Companies Have Debt Crisis Strategy?. A Legal Perspective. The Obama Administration's proposed fiscal budget

for 2012 suggested that all bets are off for biopharmaceutical revenue safeguards, but it never had a chance with Congress, as evidenced

by a unanimous no-thank-you from the Senate in late May. But that was before debt ceiling talks and the alleged possibility of a default

emerged as the driver of the fiscal solvency debate.

. Different stakeholders in the value chain, including healthcare providers, patient groups and

governments, will discuss the changing demands on the industry and how they can be reconciled with Pharma's commercial interests.

Issues for discussion will include: How can Pharma re-establish trust with patients, investors and diverse stakeholders? What do

different players in the healthcare system value, and how can the industry meet their needs? How can partnering enable the Pharma

industry to find new revenue streams? How does the Pharma business model need to change to capture value in new ways?

It is always easier to do ten-year forecasting than one-year forecasting, but it is especially true now. Stuck in 2011, it seems impossibly difficult to forecast the future because the present is so messy. Now however—in the midst of the mess—is exactly the time when ten-year forecasting can be most valuable. 2011 is authentically frightening, but it also has great potential to be a springboard year. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity are likely to get worse in 2011. Many people are already choking on uncertainty most of the time—especially people on the down side of the rich/poor gap. Some leaders are still expecting a return to predictability. As someone who has been doing ten-year forecasting for more than thirty-five years, let me be very clear about my view: if you are not confused by 2011 and the future we are facing, you are not paying attention. The future cannot help you unless you are willing to listen through the confusion. You cannot learn from the future if you are overwhelmed by the present or stuck in the past. I believe that the next decade, beginning in 2011, will be characterized by both danger and opportunity. Leaders will be buffeted, but they need not allow themselves to be depressed or immobilized. Leaders must do more than just respond to crises, though respond they must. Some of today's leaders have already turned nasty out of frustration, with considerable cause. Still, leaders can be positive change agents in the midst of chaos. Some things can get better, even as other things get worse. Organizations need a readiness discipline that assumes uncertainty, but achieves success nonetheless. Ten-year forecasters can help leaders gain perspective by looking long. One of the reasons for the current economic crisis is that short-term betting dominated long-term thought in many marketplaces. Foresight can provoke insight, even if you don't agree with the forecast. A discipline of thinking from foresight to insight to action leads—almost always—to better decisions in the present. Problem-solvers beware: even though solvable problems will still abound in the next decade, top leaders will deal mostly with dilemmas where there is no solution—but where you have to make decisions anyway. The best leaders will thrive in the space between judgment too soon (the classic mistake of the problem solver) and deciding too late (the classic mistake of the academic). Leaders will not be able to control or problem solve through volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Leaders must learn how to see through the mess with a global futures perspective, to sense patterns of change. That is what ten-year forecasting is all about. 2019 is much more clear than 2011, if only leaders take the time to look long. We know, for example, that 2019 will be a world with sensors and wireless everywhere—even in the developing world. We know that Facebook generation will be in leadership positions by 2019, though their ways of leading are only just becoming apparent. My assessment is that 2011 is the beginning of a threshold decade: our natural systems will reach tipping points of extreme challenge and some of those systems may break. Our business, organizational, and social systems will be stretched too, some of them to the breaking point. We also know that we will be even more connected in 2019 than we are today. I believe that the more connected we are, the safer we are, the more free we are, and the more powerful we are—if we realize the benefits of connectivity. We are more connected than ever before and we are—almost everyone is—globally connected. But there are downsides: the more connected we are, the more dangerous it can be, as our current economic crisis is revealing. Leaders must make the links, draw the connections, organize people for action—but protect against the dangers inherent in super-connectivity. Leaders must engage with chaotic global future forces and figure out how to make a better future. Certainly, the focus for many people in 2011 must be on holding the fort and surviving. But in every organization, there should be at least a small band of leaders with license to think about and plan for the future. 2011 is threatening, but it is also an ideal time to be looking ahead—beyond the current crises. If we stew ourselves in 2011, we'll never get to 2019. Those organizations that do nothing but hunker down in this crisis will be way behind when things start getting better. Leaders can make the future, but they won't make it all at once and they can't make it alone. 2011 can be a springboard year, if leaders use foresight to spark their own insight and inform their own action.
