Alo largo de sus rutas migratorias dependen de los humedales de variospaíses,resaltandoasílaimportanciadelacooperacióninternacionalenlaconservacióndelosrecursosnaturales.

Algunasanátidassonespeciescinegéticasdegraninterésparaelcazador.Porelloconstituyenunrecursodeconsiderablevaloreconómico,siempreycuandolacazasepractiquebajolosprincipiosdeusosostenible.

Therefore, international cooperation fortheconservationofnaturalresources, suchaswetlands, is important formigratorywaterbirds.

Somewaterfowlaregamespeciesofgreatinteresttothehunter,andmakeuparesourceofconsiderableeconomicvaluewherehuntingispracticedundersustainableuseprinciples.

The challenge of identifying waterfowl can be very recreational. Thedifferences intypeandcoloroffeathershelptotellspeciesapart. Withexperienceyoucanalsoidentifyspeciesbyflightpatternsorhabitat.Thisguidedoesnot include the commonnamesbecausedifferentnames areoftenused in each country. Includedwith each species is the scientificname, an approximate weight, a picture of the bird and its wing, adescriptionoftheirdistinguishingcharacteristics,andtheirdistribution.

One of the most stimulating activities, but also sometimes the mostfrustrating,isestimatingthenumberofbirdsthatweobserve.Practiceistheonlywaytolearntomakegoodestimates.

El Servicio de Pesca y Vida Silvestre de los EUA y el Servicio de VidaSilvestredeCanadárealizanmonitoreosdeanátidasdesdelosaños1950.Desde1990Wetlands International lleva a cabo “ElCensoNeotropicaldeAvesAcuáticas”queincluyevariospaísesdeAméricadelSur. Porsuparte, DU en colaboración con biólogos, ornitólogos y aficionados a lasaves, comenzó los conteos de anátidas en el Caribe, América Central yAméricadelSuren1999.

Desde1900enAméricadelNortesehancolocadomásde18,4millonesdeanillosenpatos.Deéstos,másde10.000hansidorecuperadosenAméricaLatinayelCaribe.Alrecuperarunanillopodemossaberlaedaddelpato,dedóndevino,yotrainformaciónimportante.EnAméricaLatinayelCaribe sólo la Argentina, Brasil y Venezuela han anillado anátidas paraproyectosespecíficosdeinvestigación.

Monitoring and Banding Themonitoringofwaterfowlpopulationsisaveryusefultooltoidentifynew areas of conservation, establish measures for management andrestoration,anddefineseasonsandbaglimitsforsustainablehunting.

TheUSFishandWildlifeServiceandtheCanadianWildlifeServicehaveperformed waterfowl surveys since the 1950s. Wetlands Internationalhascarriedout“TheNeotropicalWaterbirdCensus”inseveralcountriesinSouthAmerica since1990. For ourpart,DU, in collaborationwithnumerousbiologists,ornithologists,andamateurbirdwatchers,initiatedwaterfowlsurveysintheCaribbean,CentralAmerica,andnorthernSouthAmericain1999.

Since 1900, more than 18.4 million ducks have been banded in NorthAmerica. Of these, more than 10,000 have been recovered in LatinAmericaandtheCaribbean(LAC).Bandrecoveriescantellusabouttheageoftheduck,wheretheycamefrom,andotherimportantinformation.In LAC, only Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela have banded birds forspecificresearchprojects.

Wetlands and the Neotropical RegionWetlands are ecosystems of great economic, cultural, scientific, andrecreationalvalue,withdiverseandabundantfloraandfauna.Theyareoneofthemostproductiveecosystems,andforthisreason154countrieshavealreadyratifiedtheRamsarConventiononWetlands(Ramsar,Iran1971),aninternationaltreatywhoseobjectiveistheconservationandwiseuseoftheworld’swetlands.

Theterm“wetland”includesalargevarietyofecosystemsanditsdefinitioniscomplicated.TheRamsarConventiondescribeswetlandsas:“areasofmarsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanentortemporary,withwaterthatisstaticorflowing,fresh,brackishorsalt,includingareasofmarinewaterthedepthofwhichat lowtidedoesnotexceedsixmeters”.

The Neotropical Region (Caribbean, Central America, and SouthAmerica)includesvariousaquaticecosystems.Someareseasonal,likePaloVerdeinCostaRica.OthersarebrackishtosalinelikeLagunaCabralintheDominicanRepublic,andLagunadelosPozuelosinArgentina.StillotherscoverhugeareasliketheCiénagadeSantaMartainColombiaandPantanalsharedbyBolivia,Brazil,andParaguay.

Despite their importance for biodiversity andmankind, the majority ofwetlandshavebeenmodifiedduetohumanactivities,suchasagriculture,intensiveuseofagrochemicals,urbandevelopment,tourism,illegaland/ornon-sustainablehuntingandfishing,andimproperuseofwater.

Los proyectos desarrollados por DU para la conservación de humedalesbeneficiannosóloalasavesacuáticassinoaungrannúmerodeotrasespeciesde aves y animales. DucksUnlimited, Inc.was established in1937by a groupof sportsmen andconservationistsintheUSA.Theinitialobjectiveoftheneworganizationwastoconserveandrestorethewetlandsthathaddisappearedduringtheprolongeddroughtofthe1930sandrevivetheaffectedbirdpopulations.ThefirstprojectswereimplementedwithinCanada,wherethemajorityofNorthAmericanducksbreed.Inthe1970s,DUexpandeditsfocusareaandbegandevelopingprojectsin Mexico. DU later added projects in the USA in the 1980s and in LatinAmericaandtheCaribbeanin1999.Seventyyearsafteritsinception,DUhasmorethan1millionmembers.

The projects developed by DU for the conservation of wetlands benefit notonlywaterfowlbutalsoalargenumberofotherbirdandanimalspecies.Thesewetlandsalsoactasafilterforcontaminants,absorbfloodwaters,provideafoodsourceforlocalcommunitiesandofferrecreationalopportunities.
