Academic ResultsGCSE Results 2016: 70% A* - AA Level Results 2016: 68% A* - B

Value AddedMidYIS Tests conducted by Durham University compare predicted GCSE grades at Year 7 to with grades achieved at Year 11. These show Moreton Hall students regularly over achieve versus the national average.MidYIS places Moreton as the top UK school for Value Added for two years running.

CurriculumAll pupils work towards GCSE and A Level examinations with the average class size being 15 or fewer (considerably smaller at A Level).

We aim to offer a varied and balanced curriculum which allows pupils to achieve their potential in a stimulating and supportive atmosphere. Careful attention is paid to the needs of the individual pupil and wherever possible, a tailored programme will be created to stretch the most able or support the least confident.

Areas of specialisation of particular interest to overseas students are Mandarin Chinese, Economics and Maths. The process of choosing A Levels starts in Year 11 (Upper 5). Girls receive close guidance during the process of choosing their A Levels and have the opportunity of experiencing A Level taster lessons early in the spring term. Over 20 subjects are available at A Level and there is no restriction on the

combination of subjects. Most students take 3 A Levels. Sciences are studied by 50% of students at A Level with 70% A*- B Grades and 71% A* - A at GCSE.It is recognised that certain traditional, ‘hard’ A Levels, particularly for those girls applying to the most competitive universities, are more appropriate for academically able and ambitious students. Over 90% of girls get a place at their first choice Russell Group University e.g LSE/UCL/Warwick. 10% gain a place at Oxbridge.

EALOverseas pupils have EAL lessons included at no extra charge and work in their year groups towards an external examination such as PET, FCE or IGCSE. All pupils from year 11 upwards have IELTS lessons.

Moreton Hall is one of the top rated girls’ boarding schools in England.

If you’re looking for girl power, you’ll find it at Moreton Hall, in the heart of gorgeous Shropshire. Jonathan Forster – 24 years in the hot seat – is still working his magic, constantly launching new initiatives to make these savvy girls stand out. Take Moreton Enterprises, the student run business venture turning over £50,000 a year. Or Moreton Connect, the careers network headed up by Old Moretonians, where there are internships up for grabs at the likes of Armani. The school is known for being uncluttered by petty rules, so there’s much more time to focus on the fun stuff. A new performing-arts centre is in the pipeline, with ambitions of becoming the cultural hub of the region, and there’s the chance to perform in everything from Greek tragedies to musicals. Exceptional performance in lacrosse to report too – girls are represented in local, national and international teams. A new cricket pavilion is a mark of Mr F’s commitment to blast through those gender stereotypes. An ever-expanding curriculum now includes geology and mindfulness, and they’ve been flexing their academic muscles: one student was recognised by the Royal Geographical Society for the highest mark at geography GCSE. A-level results are solid (67 per cent A*–B last year), and STEM subjects come out top – there’s even a medical-science faculty on site. Around 80 per cent board, and absolutely EVERYONE says the food is smashing.

The Good Schools Guide 2016

PrincipalSince 1991, Jonathan Forster BA PGCE (50s) who still ‘just loves every day at Moreton Hall’. ...has continued to drive it at a pace that speaks of a life-long mission and endless creative energy. He is always ahead of the game, ensuring the school leads not follows market demands. He has kept true to the liberal educational vision of its founders and provided that liberalism with a modern twist, to give Moreton Hall girls the edge when they enter the adult world of work. Jonathan says he has been empowered by the enviroment, and it must be mutual, because his entrpreneurial spirit, his thinking outside the box, shows in the girls and the whole ethos of the place. He has done remarkable things.

Academic MattersAcademic results are strong (2014 A levels 46 per cent as A*/A, GCSE 61 per cent A*/A) and the value-added scores both at GCSE and A level are huge. Its increasing success draws in star teachers and bright girls. Though edging up all the time, the ability is quite wide on entry, which makes the results particularly sensational. It’s down to excellent teachers as well as small class sizes. The girls describe their teachers as ‘passionate and enthusiastic’ and are very aware that they are there literally all the time. ‘They give you as much extra as you need,’ says one sixth former who told us that when she was working late on a piece of work, she had emailed her teacher with a query at 11pm and had a reply.

Games, Options, the ArtsIn sport it embraces that most tradition of girls’ sports, lacrosse, where the Moreton Hall teams win everything this side of London and a fair bit nationally as well, but there are masses of other successes and opportunities with the fabulous sports facilites on site - a nine hole golf course and grounds that mean cross-country really is cross country.

Lots of music goes on, classical and popular, with girls performing regularly to both large and small audiences. Drama is hugely popular and professional.

All the girls get involved in the English Speaking Board to enhance confidence, presentation skills and the ability to think on their feet. Moreton Enterprises is part of this... it is seriously impressive.

Background & AtmosphereAs you would expect from girls who run a business at the age of 16, they are confident and at ease with themselves. They work and play hard, but there is somthing about rural Shropshire surroundings (the school is set in 100 acres of parkland) that takes any unattractive edge off the ambition and drive. We felt that every girl in England should have at least a term in this enviroment.

Pastoral Care & DisciplineThe principal wants the girls to love Moreton Hall as they would love their home, and to care for the school and each other in the same way. From what we saw, they do. Given the entrepreneurial energy about the place, the girls are amazingly relaxed. One member of staff said, ‘They have time and space here so you don’t get a frenetic atmosphere building up where no one has room for anyone except themselves’. These are not privileged princesses who think the world owes them. they are self disciplined young women who have learnt in school that you can make a difference and live happily together.

ExitAlmost all to university including one to Cambridge in 2014 (classics). Leeds very popular (including for physics and biology), then Bath, Exeter, Liverpool and Oxford Brookes. Not surprisingly, given their experience in school, a remarkable number of Old Moretonians are running successful buinesses. Our viewIt is outside the radar of the parents who don’t look beyond the homes countires but more fool them - thay are the ones missing out here. When asked why he had chosen Moreton Hall for his daughters, one parent looked vaguely bemused and said, ‘Well, why would’t you?’ We agree.

“We felt that every girl in England should have at least a term in this enviroment. The Good Schools Guide

“This is a school with a difference, rigour in everything but going about it in a way that shows girls they can lead the world in a new way. And they will!”The Good Schools Guide

Yangfanyu joined the ISC in September 2015 after attending the Intensive Academic Summer Course and Biomed/STEM course. Yangfanyu gained a place at Harrow School after leaving Moreton Hall ISC in July 2016 and achieved an outstanding IELTS score of 8 while in the ISC.

“I have been at Moreton Hall for a year and it has become an inspiring, enjoyable, and unforgettable moment in my life. Through the Summer Course, Biomedical (STEM) programme, and ISC course, I have made great progress both in study and in my foreign life skills.”

“I chose Moreton Hall Summer School as I needed to improve my spoken English after studying in the Ukraine. It was a good choice. When I arrived, I had problems with understanding and pronunciation but I noticed great improvement after two weeks of the Intensive Academic Programme.

The atmosphere is really friendly and not stressful for new students, teachers have an informal way of communicating and they’re always able to find an approach for every student, which improved my confidence. Another advantage of Moreton Hall Summer School is the really rich activity programme. Because activities change every day they can always offer something new and interesting. The sport really unites every student.”

I am also very grateful to have met all the caring teachers and staff and become friends with amazing students over the world. I believe that here I embarked on a challenging but fabulous life in the UK!

Moreton Hall is a nice place to learn, meet new friends and of course have fun! I would advise coming for no less than 4 weeks.
