Stand out project helpsmulticultural communityIt can be tough when English isn’t your rst language, your extended family is

on the other side of the world and you don’t know the region.

Spectra Vision TheatreupgradedAs Redcliffe residents

watch the new bridge

being built alongside theHoughton Highway, visitors

 to the Spectra Vision

Theatre at the Redcliffe

Museum will be intrigued

 to see footage of the

Hornibrook Highway being

built in the early 1930s.

In the past, this theatre was

 the core of the museum,

giving visitors a potted

history of Redcliffe using holograms and objects.

A recent $143,000 council

upgrade has resulted in

an entirely new theatre

production focusing on

 the seaside lifestyle of

 the peninsula.

Using images, objects and

some unique lm footage,

visitors will be transported

 to the 1920s, sitting in

 the Redcliffe Pier Theatre

surrounded by iconic

objects including a pair of

woollen 1930s bathers,

a steamer trunk, a set of

convict leg irons, and a

full working model of the

popular excursion boat, the

SS Koopa.

For more information phone

3883 1898.

But a project, known as

Standing Out, Looking In

is helping women from

multicultural backgrounds

establish themselves

and their families in

our community.

Last month, 12 women with

diverse backgrounds surveyed

about 250 others about the

problems they faced in their

day-to-day lives.

That information is being

used to work on solutions

harnessing the resources

of existing organisations to

address issues including

language barriers,

education and employment

opportunities, transport and

childcare availability.

The project targets women

because women’s issues are

family and community issues.

Standing Out, Looking

In is a joint initiative

involving council, the State

Government’s Department of

Employment and Industrial

Relations and community

employment and training

group CADET. It has received

funding from the State

Government under the Skilling

Queenslanders for Work

Initiative.

For further information please

phone 5431 6516.

Eight giant mustard-

coloured bladders

will help council savewater and money

when carrying out

vital swimming pool

maintenance.

Each 12-metre square

by 1.5-metre tall custom-

made bladder, worth about

$11,000, is able to store

152,000 litres of drinking

water and will be used at

council’s 13 swimming pools.

The bladders are part of

council’s commitment to

the Queensland WaterCommission’s Level 6 water

restrictions, that state pools

can not be lled with town

water supplies from South-

East Queensland.

Under these restrictions,

 the other option during pool

maintenance work is to

 totally empty the pools and

rell them with fresh water

sourced from outside the

region and transported by

road tanker – which would

come at a huge cost.

Based on tankered water

prices, council will have

recouped the cost of the new

bladders by the time it has

used them to maintain two

50-metre pools, at Lawnton

and Albany Creek.

The next two pools to use the

bladders, so maintenance

and repairs can be carried

out, are at Ferny Hills and

North Lakes.

Increasing numbers

of people living aloneor as couples without

children have fueled

a trend towards building

 townhouses in the

region.

Council’s town planners

have noticed a signicant

shift towards building

 townhouse complexes in

 the past couple of years,

following nearly 15 years

where little interest was

shown in their construction.

The region has a number

of recently completed

 townhouse complexes,

complexes under

construction and several

development applications

for more townhouses in

 the pipeline.

Townhouses particularly

suit the northern growth

corridor of Mango Hill,Grifn and Dakabin, where

council plans are aimed at

encouraging higher density

developments.

For more than a century,

 the average Queensland

household has been a

couple with two children

living in a detached three or

four-bedroom home with a

large back yard.

However, the State

Government’s household

projections show one-personand two-person households

are rapidly becoming

 the norm.

An ageing population,

changing social attitudes

and lifestyles, net migration

and declining fertility are all

driving the changes.

The household projection

report says the number

of “lone person” and

“couple without children”

households is expected to

increase by about 70 per

cent by 2026.

Townhouses are trendy
