Yuri� Alekseevich Anan’ev, the talented and learnphysicist, specialist in laser optics, laser engineering,technology, professor, doctor of physicomathematicalences, recipient of the State Prize of the USSR and the DRozhdestvenski� Prize of the Academy of Sciences of thUSSR, member of the Russian Academy of Natural Scienand the Russian Academy of Engineering Sciences, andrector of the Institute of Laser Technology at the St. Peteburg State Technical University, has passed away.

Y. A. Anan’ev was born in Leningrad in 1932 and edured all the burdens of the siege of the city. Despitedifficulties of wartime and the postwar years, he complesecondary school at age 16 and began his studies at the Pics Department of Leningrad State University. As a capaand active student, ‘‘to strengthen the student environmeY. A. Anan’ev was transferred to Kharkov State Universifrom which he graduated in 1953 with distinction in the spcialty of physics. After finishing graduate school~1954–56!at the A. F. Ioffe Leningrad Physicotechnical Institute,worked as a designer at the Kirov Factory.

Y. A. Anan’ev began to work at the State Optical Instute ~GOI! in 1960 in the laboratory of Professor M. PVanyukov. Starting in 1961, he worked in physics and laoptics. His most brilliant and best-recognized achievemeare his theoretical and experimental work in creatingstable cavities and his work on the control of the angudivergence of laser radiation. Y. A. Anan’ev proposed,vestigated, and put into practice the optical systems still uin most high-power lasers.

After twenty-eight years of work at GOI, in 1988 Y. AAnan’ev was invited to join the Center of Laser Technogies of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, now St. Peteburg State Technical University, where he worked untillast days and where he was a professor and the director oInstitute of Laser Technology.

Y. A. Anan’ev was the author of more than 160 article30 inventions, and three monographs, was an active memof the editorial staff ofOptika i Spektroskopiyaand a numberof scientific and scholarly councils, regularly participatedthe program committees of international conferences on lphysics, and presented invited reports at them~in Russia, theUSA, France, etc.!.

Y. A. Anan’ev skillfully built up staffs of like-mindedscientists, who are successfully continuing the work thatstarted. Scholars of the scientific school that he created w

not only at institutes in St. Petersburg, but also in other ciof Russia, the countries of the CIS, and in many scientcenters of the entire world.

Yuri� Alekseevich was a very brilliant and many-sideperson. He was enthusiastic about music and a good piawas an outstanding and fervent sportsman and an invetemushroom gatherer, and greatly loved team games. Heways had a spirit of competence and the desire to be firseverything.

Yuri� Alekseevich was a strict and demanding chief bwholeheartedly stood up for his coworkers and was alwready to aid them.

For his successes in scientific activity, he was awardthe Sign of Honor and medals.

The shining memory of Yuri� Alekseevich and his ex-ample of service to science will long remain in our hearts
