Yurił Alekseevich Anan’ev, the talented and learned physicist, specialist in laser optics, laser engineering, and technology, professor, doctor of physicomathematical sci- ences, recipient of the State Prize of the USSR and the D. S. Rozhdestvenskił Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and the Russian Academy of Engineering Sciences, and di- rector of the Institute of Laser Technology at the St. Peters- burg State Technical University, has passed away. Y. A. Anan’ev was born in Leningrad in 1932 and en- dured all the burdens of the siege of the city. Despite the difficulties of wartime and the postwar years, he completed secondary school at age 16 and began his studies at the Phys- ics Department of Leningrad State University. As a capable and active student, ‘‘to strengthen the student environment,’’ Y. A. Anan’ev was transferred to Kharkov State University, from which he graduated in 1953 with distinction in the spe- cialty of physics. After finishing graduate school ~1954–56! at the A. F. Ioffe Leningrad Physicotechnical Institute, he worked as a designer at the Kirov Factory. Y. A. Anan’ev began to work at the State Optical Insti- tute ~GOI! in 1960 in the laboratory of Professor M. P. Vanyukov. Starting in 1961, he worked in physics and laser optics. His most brilliant and best-recognized achievements are his theoretical and experimental work in creating un- stable cavities and his work on the control of the angular divergence of laser radiation. Y. A. Anan’ev proposed, in- vestigated, and put into practice the optical systems still used in most high-power lasers. After twenty-eight years of work at GOI, in 1988 Y. A. Anan’ev was invited to join the Center of Laser Technolo- gies of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, now St. Peters- burg State Technical University, where he worked until his last days and where he was a professor and the director of the Institute of Laser Technology. Y. A. Anan’ev was the author of more than 160 articles, 30 inventions, and three monographs, was an active member of the editorial staff of Optika i Spektroskopiya and a number of scientific and scholarly councils, regularly participated in the program committees of international conferences on laser physics, and presented invited reports at them ~in Russia, the USA, France, etc.!. Y. A. Anan’ev skillfully built up staffs of like-minded scientists, who are successfully continuing the work that he started. Scholars of the scientific school that he created work not only at institutes in St. Petersburg, but also in other cities of Russia, the countries of the CIS, and in many scientific centers of the entire world. Yurił Alekseevich was a very brilliant and many-sided person. He was enthusiastic about music and a good pianist, was an outstanding and fervent sportsman and an inveterate mushroom gatherer, and greatly loved team games. He al- ways had a spirit of competence and the desire to be first in everything. Yurił Alekseevich was a strict and demanding chief but wholeheartedly stood up for his coworkers and was always ready to aid them. For his successes in scientific activity, he was awarded the Sign of Honor and medals. The shining memory of Yurił Alekseevich and his ex- ample of service to science will long remain in our hearts.
