Work Breakdown Structure

(WBS)

Definition

WBS is a deliverables-orientated

collection of project components

It is a categorization and decomposition

of the project deliverables

WBS should be input for the cost

estimation, time planning, risk planning,

quality planning and resource planning.

WBS defines the required work to complete

the project

WBS creates a sense of urgency

WBS can help prevent scope creep

WBS provides control

WBS is the scope baseline

Divide your project into phases

Phase has deadline, portion of project

that must be complete before another

phase in begin

Define the work package in each phase

Work package is the smallest deriverable

in WBS ( 8/80 rules!)

Main output : WBS and WBS Dictionary

At the WBS should get approval from

project sponsor to confirm the series of

activities and the mesh with an

organization.
