From the Editor
Old Man Winter may have decided to hang around for
a bit longer…but it is a great day to be from Minne-
sota. A local girl, NFC FC Linns Windwaalker Abbie
has done our state proud, and is featured on the cover
of the January/February issue of the GSPCA Short-
hair Journal. Abbie is the winner of the 2010 GSPCA
National All Age Championship!! Abbie was bred by
Ann Mathiowetz of Windwalker Kennels in Goodhue
MN, and is owned by our GSPC of MN member
Clark Linn of Rogers MN. We are truly proud of this
local gal’s accomplishment!!!
I’m pretty sure we should be seeing Abbie’s family at
the Annual Awards Banquet scheduled for March 19,
2011 at the Hampton Inn in Shoreview MN. I hope
that many of you will also be attending to receive the
honors your own GSPs have earned in 2010, and
cheer on those other GSPs in their 2010 accomplish-
ments. The GSPC Awards Eligibility Form & the
Annual Awards Banquet Form are on Page # & # of
this Newsletter. Be sure to submit them in time, so
that we can bestow the honors you and your dogs
have earned in 2010. This promises to be a great
event!!
We are asking those attending the Annual Awards
Banquet, to bring some candid photos of your dogs
doing what they do, so that we can have a little
friendly photo competition.
For those attending the Awards Banquet, the raffle
promises to hold many great items, and is always a
hit!
So mark your calendars, and we’ll see you there!

NFC FC Linns Windwalker Abbie “Abbie”
2010 AKC GSPCA National All-Age Champion
Owner: Clark & Matt Linn ~ www.maverickshorthairs.com Breeder: Anne Mathiowetz ~ www.windwalkerkennels.com
Trained & Handled by: Dennis Brath ~ www.cadenkennels.com
From a very early age, Abbie showed that she was something special. They were sure she was no ordinary German Shorthaired Pointer. From the time they brought her home, she exhibited exuberance and drive every time she was taken to the field. During her first year Abbie was entered in several hunt Test. It was obvious Abbie was goiong to be a big running dog, so they entered the world of field trials. At 14 months of age Abbie entered into her first field trial. She won the derby and placed 2nd in open gun dog. For the next couple of years they continued to run Abbie in trials in Min-nesota without much success. Once they placed Abbie with Dennis Brath of Caden Kennels, Abbie’s career took off and she began to excel on trial grounds which were better suited for her big running style. Dennis developed Abbie into the special athlete that she is. Abbie won the 2007 and 2008 NGSPA Hungarian Partridge Champion-ships and wan a 4 point major retrieving stake in 2009. 2010 has been a good year for Abbie. She completed her AKC Field Championship and now holds the title of AKC GSPCA National All-Age Champion. At home Abbie is a wonderful housedog; and yes she sleeps on the bed. She gets along with their other German Shorthairs and anyone that will give her a treat or some love. Abbie is the consummate predator and she keeps the squirrel population down around the property. She is their own goddess Athena. Abbie will be taking on the new challenge of motherhood, with her breeding to NFC Chisholm Creek Jax or Better. You can be sure she will excel at this as Abbie has with everything else she has taken on.
We wish you well Abbie!!! You have made us all proud

What is an AKC Hunt Test AKC Hunt Tests were designed to showcase what a dog and hunter may be required to do in a normal day's hunt. They were set up to meas-ure dogs against a set standard as opposed to a competition between dogs. Hunting tests were developed to test dogs at three different levels. Those levels are Junior, Senior and Master. Pointing Breed Hunting Tests were planned so that a dog must receive a certain number of passing scores in order to be awarded a title for that level. A dog was not and is not required to title at a given level before being allowed to work towards a higher title. Below are descriptions for what is required for each level. Junior Hunting Test: A Junior hunting dog must have a fast, yet attractive, manner of hunting, and demonstrate not only intelligence in seeking objectives, but also the ability to find game. The Junior hunter dog must
1.) show a keen desire to hunt, be bold and independent and range a distance from the handler’s side 2.) establish point on at least fifty (50) percent of the birds it encounters 3.) hold point until the handler gets within normal gunshot range. 4.) not be frightened when a blank cartridge is fired by the handler. 5.) show reasonable obedience to their handler’s commands.
** To be awarded the Junior Hunter title (JH After the Name),a dog must have received Qualifying scores in four (4) Junior Hunting Tests. Senior Hunting Test: A Senior hunting dog must
1.) show all of the attributes of a Junior hunting dog. 2.) must be ‘steady to wing’ on all pointed birds (remain in position until the shot or dog is released) 3.) must retrieve. A legitimate attempt to retrieve all downed birds must be made. 4.) must honor, whenever it encounters its bracemate on point. A dog that steals its bracemate’s point cannot receive a Qualifying score.
** To be recorded as a Senior Hunter (SH After the Name), a dog must either qualify in five (5) Senior Hunting Tests or must have earned a Junior Hunter title and qualify in four (4) Senior Hunting Tests Master Hunting Test: A Master hunting dog must give a finished performance and demonstrate clearly that it deserves to be qualified as such. It must be under its handler’s control at all times, and handle kindly, with an absolute minimum of noise and hacking by the handler. A Master hunting dog must show a keen desire to hunt, must have a bold and attractive manner of running, and must demonstrate not only intelligence in seeking objec-tives, but also the ability to find game. The dog must hunt for its handler at all times at a range suitable for a handler on foot, and should show or check in front of its handler frequently. Intelligent use of the wind and terrain in locating game, accurate nose, and intensity on point are es-sential.
1.) must cover adequate ground but never range out-of-sight for a length of time that would detract from its usefulness as a practical hunting companion. 2.) must point staunchly 3.) must positively demonstrate its ‘steadiness to wing and shot’ on all birds and if it breaks, it cannot receive a Qualifying score. 4.) must honor, whenever it encounters its bracemate on point. A dog that steals its bracemate’s point cannot receive a Qualifying score. 5.) must be retrieve all birds promptly, tenderly and absolutely to hand.
*** To be recorded as a Master Hunter (MH After the Name), a dog must either qualify in six (6) Master Hunting Tests or must have earned a Senior Hunter title and qualify in five (5) Master Hunting Tests
