Pastor ’s Report
Dear Fellowship of the Redeemed,
In his book, Coming Home, by Dr. James Dobson, he tells the following
story:
“ A few years ago, my staff bought me a ‘talking scale’ for my birthday. I never told them how badly I hated that thing. It had no volume control and
shouted my weight all over the neighborhood. Nevertheless, I went on a two
week diet shortly thereafter and used the scale to monitor my weight loss. Every morning I would get out of bed and climb on board, to which a man’s
voice would respond by giving me the good (or bad) news.
About 12 days later I hopped on the scale one morning, and it promptly told me I weighed 278 pounds. I couldn’t have gained 80 pounds in one day, so
I got off and back on again. This time it said, ‘Your weight is 147 pounds.’
Every time I stepped on the scale it reported a different number. Why had it
suddenly gone bonkers?
Finally, I stepped up again, and the crazy thing didn’t say anything. I
stood there in my pajamas, feeling stupid and waiting for this machine to talk to me. After a long pause, a very tired voice said, ‘Myyyyyyyyyyyyy baaat-
terrrezz aaarrre loooowwww!’
I said, I know Buddy. So are mine.’
I’ll bet I’m writing for someone today who is suffering from that chronic
illness known as ‘low batteries.’ The best cure for a power failure is a radical
change of pace----even if it’s only for a day or two. Take off! Get out! Play hooky! Go shopping! Do something that you have been wanting to do, just for
fun.
Then, perhaps, you’ll come home with your batteries recharged and raring
to go.”
My prayer is that you and your family will be able to partake in some re-charging events this summer. If you are away from us over the summer, try to
find other places to worship and come back refreshed and recharged.
God’s Peace.

Organ Update
Three years ago, our organ technicians informed us that we should start thinking about
releathering the organ chests. As this was discussed through several committees, the
recommendation was made to complete this project through several phases with spe-
cial contributions funding the work. In the winter of 2012, the Great division (the
pipes above the pulpit) were releathered. As more contributions have come in, the fi-
nance committee has authorized the next phase which is the Swell division (one of the
enclosed divisions behind the screen in the chancel). Based on our organ technicians'
schedule, this project should be completed in August. Once this is done, we will need
to work towards raising funds to complete the Choir and Pedal divisions. Your sup-
port of this project is greatly appreciated. We are blessed to have our organ and the
continuing maintenance will keep it glorifying God for many years to come.

A Church, a Dog, and a Monster Storm
There are many accounts of living through Hurricane
Hugo, but none quite like this.
A Church, a Dog, and a Monster Storm is Doug Lud-lum's account of how "a preacher, an organist, and a
Basset hound survived an enormous storm in an old
Charleston church." Ludlum, the longtime Choirmaster and Organist of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, was a
self-proclaimed storm junkie. He writes, "No one en-
joyed a big crashing, banging gully washer thunder-storm any better than I."
But Hugo exceeded even his expectations. Ludlum went
from charting the storm's progress on his cork board to abandoning his house on Radcliffe Street and taking
refuge in the church.
All proceeds from the book are earmarked for St. Mat-
thew's current challenge, a $7 million renovation of the
sanctuary following water damage. This is the latest in a
long history of challenges for the 142 year old sanctu-ary. Completed in 1872, seven years after the bombard-
ment of Charleston in the Civil War, the church was
shaken by the earthquake of 1886, suffered severe dam-age in a fire in 1965, and withstood additional damage
during Hugo.

contact the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church office.
