The trees you chooseto landscape your homenot only add beauty, theycan help cut energycosts by providing shadein the summer and wind-breaks from strong windsin the winter. Trees cleanthe air, reduce noise, cre-ate privacy and can in-crease a property’svalue. The right tree foryour particular environ-ment and the right spotto plant the tree in youryard are important con-siderations in order toget all these benefitsfrom the trees. To ensure a tree’s max-imum life-span, considerwhat the tree needs in re-gard to your environmen-tal factors. The firstconsideration is tempera-ture because low temper-atures, especially if theyoccur suddenly, canfreeze and kill the livingcells in trees. Elevationand which side of a hillwhere the tree will beplanted also needs to betaken into considerationbecause these factors in-fluence the temperature. The amount of moisturethe tree needs will alsohelp you determinewhich species will besuitable for your yard. Each species tolerates
wet or dry growing condi-tions to a different de-gree. Special attentionmust be given to your se-lection if your yard is pe-riodically flooded, or verydry, or is continually ex-posed to the drying effectof wind. Watering can bemodified on a dry site, but, even when you irri-gate, it is important toknow the optimal soilmoisture requirementsfor your species. The amount of shade atree will tolerate is an-other consideration. Some species, like whitebirch and most pines, re-quire full sunlight. Otherspecies, like mostmaples, hemlocks andyews, grow well inshade. Don’t make themistake of planting yourtree where it is mis-matched with the amountof available light. Every locality has itsproblems with particularinsects or diseases. Thebest way to avoid troubleis to avoid the speciesthat are prone to havingthese pests. Although itis possible to buy vari-eties that have been bredfor resistance to a dis-ease, in most casesplanting a species whichis prone to local pests is
asking for trouble be-cause it places the treeunder stress that makesit more vulnerable to in-sects and disease. Soil factors are impor-tant when selecting atree. Soil depth, structureand pH, in addition tosoil moisture, can makethe difference betweensuccess or failure afterplanting. For example,deep-rooted species willneed adequate soil depthfor their structural roots, whereas shallow-rootedspecies may do all righton sites where soils thinlycover bedrock or a hardlayer of clay. Species thatneed light, sandy soilshould not be planted inrocky or clay-type soils.Unfortunately, the abil-ity of a species to tolerateair pollution is becomingmore important. Chemi-cals in the air vary withlocalities, and, in somecases, the accumulativeeffects of pollution arejust beginning to showup. Salt spray from eitherthe ocean or street de-icing can be a problemlocally, and somespecies are more sensi-tive to it than others.Where these are prob-lems, ask a certified ar-borist, nursery
professional, urbanforester, or extensionagent about which treesto avoid. After choosing aspecies that will growwell in your environment, your next considerationis where the tree shouldbe planted is the nextconsideration. Providingshade is why many peo-ple plant trees. Treesprovide a greater coolingeffect than man-madestructures because theynot only block the rays ofthe sun, they add waterto the air through transpi-ration. Observation is thebest way to determinewhere to plant to maxi-mize shade. Position thetree where you want theshadow during thehottest time of the yearand the time of day youdesire the shade.Pre-plan where you willplant your trees. Onegood principle is to neverlocate a tree where it willsplit your lot or a viewinto equal halves. An-other is to use your treesto enhance the houseand lot. For example, togive the lot an appear-ance of greater depth, plant on a diagonal lineoutward from the frontcorners of the house.
This is called framing.Trees planted behind thehouse and to the side willprovide background.Trees can also add visualappeal to a patio, pool orplay area; or they can beused to separate spacesand provide space enclo-sure. Trees with color orsome other showy fea-ture can be used as ac-cent points in yourlandscaping picture. When planting trees aswindbreaks and screens,low-branching conifersthat hold their foliage aremost effective for screen-ing unsightly areas andproviding privacy. Noiseis best reduced by tall, densely planted treeswith fleshy, broad leaves. If combined withconifers, some noise re-duction can be extendedthroughout the year. Dustcan also be filtered bysuch a combination. Boundaries can be de-fined with trees. Small,narrow-crowned specieswill do the job while notinvading your neighbor’sspace. Available space isprobably the considera-tion most often over-looked or misunderstood
when deciding what treeto plant. Even for a pro-fessional, it is often diffi-cult to envision theplanting site 5, 10 or 20years in the future. Yet, itis essential before plant-ing to know what the treewill look like as it nearsmaturity. Consider theheight, crown, spreadand root space. Thecharacter of tree crownsvaries among species asmuch as leaf shapes orbark patterns. Shape isanother clue to how wella tree will fit the spaceyou have available, whatproblems might occur, and how well it will helpmeet the goals you havefor your property. For more informationon choosing the righttree, visit the Arbor DayFoundation at www.ar-borday.org or contact theMoore County HomeBuilders Association at(910)944-2992 or visit on-line at www.mchba.com.

(ARA) - Technology isin virtually every facetof our lives, yet many ofthe everyday conven-iences we enjoy nowhave been around forless than 100 years. In the kitchen, for in-stance, the various ap-pliances, fixtures andgadgets that convertedthe once single-func-tion space into thehome's hub of activityhave changed dramati-cally since their intro-duction in the early1900s. A look backthrough history showshow some of theseitems originated andevolved over the years.A tool of convenience, the microwave ovenhelps you cook foodfaster. Born of thesame technology usedby radar systems inWorld War II, the mi-crowave oven was in-troduced by Raytheonengineer PercyLeBaron Spencer in1947. Dubbed theRadarange oven, thefirst rendition of the ap-pliance was too largeand expensive for resi-dential home use. The first countertopmicrowave, which wassuitable for residentialuse, wasn't introduceduntil more than 20years later in 1967.Today, microwaveovens are sleek appli-ances, often built intocabinetry and completewith touch pad controlsand a wide range ofsettings. With advance-ments in technology, they can bake, grill androast food that is just asdelicious as if it wasprepared in a conven-tional oven. The refrigerator is animportant appliance be-cause it safely and effi-ciently stores yourfood, helping keep itfresh and safe to eat. This makes it possiblefor you to shop aheadof time and save left-over food. How didpeople get by beforethe refrigerator was in-vented? People usedwhat was called an ice-box, a compact non-mechanical refrigerator, which used a block ofice to keep food cool. The design had its limi-tations and became ahealth issue as safesources of natural icebecame harder to find. The refrigerator wasan essential appliancein the residentialkitchen by the 1920s,and more than 90 per-cent of urban homeshad a refrigerator by
1950, according to His-tory Magazine. Themodern day refrigeratorfeatures a number of in-novations that make itmore than just a placeto store food. For ex-ample, a dual coolingsystem allows thefridge and freezer to cir-culate cool air sepa-rately; ensuring odorsfrom the fridge don't af-fect the pureness ofice. Soon, householdrefrigerators will com-municate with home-owners virtually to alertthem when items areabout to spoil and helppopulate grocery shop-ping lists. Even the kitchenfaucet has evolved sig-nificantly throughthoughtful innovation. The founder of MascoCorporation, entrepre-neur Alex Manoogian, developed the first suc-cessful washerless ballvalve faucet in 1954. Henamed it after theshape of the internalcam, which resembledthe fourth letter of theGreek alphabet: delta. It was the first single-handle kitchen faucetdesign and the begin-ning of Delta FaucetCompany. Since then, the company has con-tinued to shape theplumbing products cat-egory."We consider our-selves America's faucetinnovation leader be-cause we've made ourname with a solid his-tory of technological in-novations," says BobRodenbeck, director ofresearch and develop-ment at Delta FaucetCompany. "From thevery beginning, we'vesought to produce in-novative solutions toprovide people with abetter way to experi-ence water."In 2009, Delta Faucetintroduced its innova-tive Touch2O Technol-ogy, which enables theuser to activate the flowof water with a simpletouch anywhere on thespout or handle.
